Looking for suggestions for a good portable music player
Must support gapless playback
Must support FLAC
Must have excellent sound quality/sound chip
I used to buy sansa clip but the sound quality of the new models are very average
Doesn't need to play video

Potentially something like a lg v30 or LG G7, they have quad DAC and you could use as a dedicated music player and not use it a phone

Lost my sansa clip while back and reckon using an old mobile as a dedicated music player, as already suggested , is an option.
I have since bought a replacement clip+ from cex

Used to have Cowon MP3 player.
But I am just using mobile phone these days.

Biggest concerns with phone is battery life (my iphone 7 battery runs down very quickly) and storage (would like at least 256gb to store files.. thanks

That'll be due to the age of your phone, the battery is likely due replacement.

i had a sansa clip for a while then a fioo or something that took two sdxc cards, but now use a samsung s20 ultra with 512gb card and musicviolet as main player. bigger screen, easier to read, and as a phone does spotify, tidal, etc and everything else a phone can do, so useful as a backup phone, whilst my iphone is my main phone. i had a cubot x20 or something like that for £60 from amazon for a while, they are decent bang for the buck phones, but have a look at the second hand deals from musig magpie etc when the 20% off ebay deals are on
