It is for his birthday and the last phone I will buy him (18)
Convince me otherwise..... Anything better out there. I want one with Warranty and will be buying applecare for it as well.

For what? has he said he specifically wants an iphone? does it have to be mini? are you looking for general alternatives at this price point?
But if there is a genuine argument for a Samsung et al then I am open to being convinced
