Disgusting Sainsburys Pricing - Baileys (on another thread)

Posted 8th Nov 2023
WIth all the Euphoria regarding £10 Baileys 1 Litre bottle, I popped into my Local Sainsburys (had a Nectar card but lost it), hoping to pick up a bottle for about £12-13.

And this is what I found.

They copies Tesco style of differential pricing for loyalty card owners, but this is taking the biscuit !

Since when have anyone charged £21.95 for a Baileys bottle? OR £35 for a 70cl Black label ?

A great disincentive for a casual (non Nectar holding) buyers and taking the proverbial ....

They surely lost a sale today.

Seriously, what price loyalty ?

Just pick up a physical card instore and use that. I got one for this purpose a few months ago for the same reason. Never registered it, but still working today.

And where is the problem with installing the Nectar app on the phone or just adding the card number to the Google Wallet?

So not the point. Shouldn’t have to fart ass around just to get a reasonable price.

Just take it to a self scanner and ask someone for a swipe. I've swiped my Tesco card a few times for other people.

At the Sainsbury's website it seems that the 1 litre is actually cheaper than the 70 cl, don't know if that's intentional or a glitch. Anyway it is a Nectar price and you can just use a physical card rather than the app, there are other offers when you use the Smartshop scanner/app but I think these are mostly customer specific.

What's disgusting about it? Is anyone forcing people to buy at that price? Is it available only at Sainsbury's? There is no entitlement as far as alcohol pricing is concerned.

So the real rant is you lost your Nectar card?

If the sense of entitlement and righteous outrage could be converted into energy, UK can power the entire world and kill the oil industry.

Wait until you hear about the store that requires you pay a yearly fee to shop in it.

The counter keeping track of the number days until OP finds something else to complain about has been reset

Keep counting. This is HUKD and I consider it my prerogative to highlight the abysmal ways our retailers price gouge punters and treat us as fools.

Let me know when you reset the counter again.

Tesco club card is a scam, much prefer supermarkets that lhave one price, not a price for "locals"

All the supermarkets seem to be following suit: Tesco Clubcard prices, Morrisons and More, even the Co-op have loyalty card-only prices (think the Co-op were late to the party).

You could say it's a pain if you forget your card but just make sure you have your phone on you and you can access it on the app.

Not sure I would call it "disgusting" though! I'd say that for older customers it may be offputting (those who aren't keen on loyalty cards or even the internet) but they'll be in the minority.

Agreed. I'm "older" and have been using loyalty cards for years. Tesco Clubcard vouchers paid for many years of RAC Membership!!

Tip - Even a clear photo or screenshot of the Nectar card bar code is sufficient - I have a picture of hubby's on my phone so I can access any decent offers on his a/c when I'm in-store. Same with his M&S Sparks and Lidl app cards 😄. (edited)

I can see the OP's point .... my dads 94 and isnt ever going be using a Nectar app anytime soon.....nor a plain old Nectar card.

So is he going to take 2 buses to go to Morrisons (or wherever ) just because Sainsbury's are taking the proverbial....
    Whoohoo's avatar
Except morrisons are doing it too now

Hate all these cards you need to get cheaper prices
Think it's only Asda who don't do it?

Worse if your wife does a full shop in Sainsbury's and finds out you've still got her Nectar card and it's at home. Needless to say we have the card in our Google wallet now!

They will lose some customers doing it but will gain many more, It is a retail tactic all these companies find ways to lure people in

At the end of the day they are a business not a charity.

It's basically so that Sainsbury's can show investors that they have a loyal customer base.

It's nothing new. I used to work for GAME many years ago and they targeting us on pushing Reward cards, and at that time, they actually charged for them too.. (edited)
