Posted 13th Jul 2023
Noticed a few people complaining on deals about reduced ABV on Beers as I suspected it's due to tax changes

I don't drink those brands, but if I did I'd be changing drinks.

No point in drinking some of that stuff
May as well have water or non alcoholic
It's been going on for years
I just get the Aldi bottles of beer, all rip offs, but they seem to be keeping their strength

The figures in the article are way out, but the general gist of it is correct.

Less alcohol so may be deliberate to encourage people to drink more spend more so as to get the desired effect 🥴

It is also because the tax is on a litre of pure alcohol. Lowering the ABV means that litre fills more bottles / cans thus reducing the effective tax per bottle / can. This can help keep prices down at the store. (edited)
