Sorry for the delay responding to this. Yes updates work normally. I couldn't get either of my bank account apps working though forgot to mention that. Not sure how much ability Google will have to kill the services in a future update but I think it would be of no benefit to them to try. They don't not want to work with Huawei its the ridiculous sanctions causing this. I'm sure it'll all be put to bed soon enough especially with huawei being able to become at least a semi competitor with HarmonyOS. The hoops you need to jump through do make it too much of a pain for most people especially considering the prices. I've ended up with a note 20 ultra now and I'm happy with that but the huawei phones are beautifully designed and built. Hopefully this ridiculous urinating contest will be over soon.

Do you get updates on the apps? Does WhatsApp work on the phone? What’s stopping google from pushing an update to play services to block it from working on your huawei? It’s that market dominance of google and Apple that’s forcing end users to have to choose against their preferred brand
Had a chuckle at your settle comment. Yeah most of my work colleagues (who work in IT) are part of the nutter crowd in regards to 5g. Does my head in. I had the Poco f2 pro for a while and the camera is very decent with the macro lens actually being one of the better on phones. It also has the best battery life on a phone I've ever used by far. Its a steal at 300 at the minute. I'm just holding out hope that Google and Huawei are allowed to do business again.
Thanks. I am still on my beloved p20 pro that takes amazing pics which is why I would like to choose between the p30 pro and the p40 pro. I know 5g is still being touted as the one causing COVID 19 by some nutters so a nationwide rollout that works is still sometime away. However, the Xiaomi deals on amazon today make you wonder whether to do the opposite of Oneplus (settle for a xiaomi) but with an average camera?
