Confirmed: Netflix Unveils First Details of New Anti-Password Sharing Measures

Posted 1st Feb 2023
Update 3
New information

  • The streaming giant said the tightening of its rules will begin in the United States and other countries during the current quarter.
  • This means it will be brought in between April to June, so password sharing will be banned by July.
Update 2
Totally swiped this from the article below, but now they have confirmed how it will be done (Basically sapping the fun out of it )

Update 19/04/2023

In a statement released today, Netflix said: "We learn more with each rollout and we've incorporated the latest learnings, which we think will lead to even better results.

"To implement these changes, we shifted out the timing of the broad launch from late Q1 to Q2.

"We are planning on a broad rollout [of the password sharing crackdown], including in the US, in Q2.

"We're pleased with the most recent launches of paid sharing, and while we could have launched broadly in Q1 [the first three months of 2023], we found opportunities to improve the experience for members."

Netflix has estimated that over 100 million users worldwide are using the service through the login credentials of someone else. It hopes that by putting an end to account sharing, it will bring a new infusion of revenue to the company. It’s essentially the only way that Netflix can make meaningful subscriber additions in North America, where the service currently sees its highest share of market penetration.

The Netflix Help Centre now has a page outlining how your account should be shared, and how it shouldn’t. Check below for all the details you’ll need regarding sharing a password on Netflix.

Who Can Use a Netflix Account Now?
Netflix accounts are still shareable, but only within one household. To ensure that your devices are associated with your primary location, Netflix is now asking users to connect to the Wi-Fi at your primary location, open the Netflix app or website, and watch something at least once every 31 days.

Can You Still Share Netflix With Someone Who Doesn’t Live With You?
No, accounts are only meant to be used within one household. Netflix will prompt users who try to sign into your account elsewhere to sign up for their own account instead and block their access until they do.

Netflix will NOT begin automatically charging account holders whose information is used outside of their homes.

Can Other Users on Your Netflix Account Save Their Profiles?
Yes, Netflix offers users a profile transfer feature that will allow them to migrate their show recommendations, watch history, and more to their own account if they decide to create one. This will give password sharers the opportunity to preserve their profile if they sign up for their own Netflix accounts.

Can You Still Use Netflix While Traveling?
Signing into Netflix outside of your home may lead to the device in use being blocked from Netflix. This could prevent you from signing into new devices while traveling, but Netflix has devised a workaround.

Traveling users who want to use Netflix on a hotel smart TV, company laptop, etc. can request a temporary code from the service when signing in. This will give them access to their account for seven consecutive days.

How Can You Prevent Netflix from Blocking Your Devices?
Signing into home Wi-Fi at least once every 31 days on your devices will make them “trusted devices,” which Netflix will remember and leave unblocked.

If your device has been blocked incorrectly, you’ll need to contact Netflix in order to get it unblocked.

How Will Netflix Know if You’re Not in Your Home/Primary Location?
Netflix uses information such as IP addresses, device IDs, and account activity to determine whether a device signed into your account is connected at your primary location.

If your device is being used outside your home by someone you haven’t authorized, you can sign into your account and sign out on all other devices, then change your password.

How Many Devices Will Netflix Let You Use Simultaneously in One Location?
That all depends on which plan you’re signed up for. Netflix offers four distinct price tiers, and the number of simultaneous streams varies on which tier you subscribe to.

These measures seem like cautious first steps to avoid a massive exodus of account-sharing users. If they do not meet Netflix’s expectations in curbing password sharing, harsher measures, such as charging users who continue to give out their login information, could follow. Netflix began testing methods to charge users $3 when someone outside the home accessed their account in several Latin American countries in 2022.

When discussing Netflix’s plans to curb password sharing in mid-January, Netflix co-CEO Greg Peters said the company was seeking “thoughtful experimentation to let our members speak to us in terms of what set of solutions work for them.”

Now that the first details regarding that experimentation are public, all that remains to be seen is how users respond.

I just asked Netflix about my premium family account which my boys use across two homes due to divorce. They said they will send a verification link to my email for any new device, and will request verification then periodically. They could not say how frequently. But it seems I won't have to pay more

Don't think they have thought about it. You can't even travel and use netflix anymore. Seems really dumb

The only reason I still have a Netflix account is because my parents sometimes use it.

The only reason my parents ever use Netflix is because I have an account.

    Bye Netflix

Geez, the excuses and rambling that you guys come up with....

You sign in monthly, what is the issue? And if you are living at home that means no issue.
This has effectively zero impact on genuine users.

I doubt they are worried about sharers leaving...

I know I will get abuse from you lot but you cannot really justify your position if a genuine user. Personally I would rather see everybody paying for the service if they actually watch it.

There are people with family members at university campus. Some families have 2 teenagers studying at universities. Are you telling each one to get seperate accounts ?

Cancelled. I can’t be arsed. There is rubbish on there anyway.

So I need request a temporary code in order to use my Netflix in a different location? Quite an inconvenience. I’m sure it won’t take too long to sort, but still not as streamlined as before. I tend to take my fire stick with me to hotels when working away.
    Truffian69's avatar
    Fire stick.....is that a euphemism?

My Son logs in at Uni, I'm glad to save him the cost of having his own account, so if he can't do this then as much as I do like Netflix I'll be cancelling on principle.....
We often stay at my parents caravan and log into our account on our smart TV, so that too won't be allowed?....also log in on holiday when we're out the country......
If this is Netflix's way of clawing back the millions wasted paying Ginge & Whinge for their "documentary" then they can shove their service where the sun don't stream!
  14. cartwheelbob's avatar
I guess we all need to pack out bags and leave Argentina/Turkey etc assuming they are strict with home location IP address (edited)
  15. TommyNooka's avatar
They already have a limit on the amount of screens you can use at once, if you're paying extra for that service what difference should it make to Netflix where those screens are being watched?
It's a desperate cash grab from a service in decline. I can't even remember the last thing I watched on Netflix.
  16. Shivesh's avatar
There is very little good, new content coming out in netflix. And they continually invest, against majority user support, in blackwashing and transwashing everything. The majority of their content is cringy and ends in massive losses. And then we, as the majority sensible viewers are penalised for this because they aren't growing enough. The day that the decide to do this, I and many users will boycott and they will be forced to drop their prices. So whatever. If netflix continues to ignore their majority market, they will continue to lose.

    jon81uk's avatar
Whats the faff? Use Netflix at home at least once a month. I bet the vast majority of people do that anyway.

Imagine it being a REQUIREMENT to sign in to your Netflix account at home before you go on holiday

Family package should still be allowed to share multiple houses. What about ppl who have subscription from Turkey, are we going to be forced to subscribe from UK? (edited)
    Flying_Orange's avatar
Yes, you should be. If you are living in UK you should be paying UK prices.
  20. ufop's avatar
Can only use if for being away for 7 days.... many of us go away for 2 weeks sometimes more if your lucky and can afford it!
    deleted2686495's avatar
I don't think that's right - if you watch from your primary location, it should become registered for 31 days. So you can be away for 2 weeks and be fine. If you don't go back to the primary location in that month you can ask for an additional 7 days, so in theory you can be away for 5 1/2 weeks before the block kicks in.

This isn’t “driving people back to piracy”.

If you cancel your account and start illegally downloading films afterwards, that’s a choice you’ve made that has nothing to do with Netflix.
  22. deleted524415's avatar
Lol @ netflix thinking this creates a new infusion of revenue. They will lose subscribers not gain them doing this.
    ZeBadger's avatar
I upped my subscription to the max 4K one to allow 4 concurrent streams when I started aharing. I hardly use it, but my brother does and also a colleague (who probably uses it by far the most). I will ditch it if it stops working.

I imagine that they will save money if password sharers leave because they will probably get reduced resource usage, per account, on their servers. However, I don't think that is their goal and I have therefore sold my Netflix shares (nearly 50% up 😁), because I think that they will nosedive when their subscriber counts get deflated. (edited)
  23. KingBennis's avatar
Will have to get in there first and set my parents account to my home address !
  24. Flying_Orange's avatar
Freeloaders are crying because they will have to pay for the service......booooo hooooo
    johnptr126's avatar
It's not just that, what netflix provides isnt really worth the fullprice anyways...
  25. drewbles82's avatar
driving more people back to piracy and the good thing about piracy these days is you can opt for the best quality so actually getting better quality than what you were paying for.
The way my family have done sharing is I buy Disney, sister gets Netflix and dad gets Amazon. We babysit a lot for my sister and they watch a lot of Netflix but won't be able to via this rule
  26. jinkssick's avatar
So us, Turkey subs, will we have to move to Istanbul?
  27. Kai_Kinder's avatar
Just had a thought, I wonder how they are handling "connect to the home network" because say... If owner A has a static IP VPN that they share with Friend B, from outside the connection it would look like they are both connected to the the same network right?
    deleted2686495's avatar
As I queried earlier - if you don't have a static IP, every time you reboot your router, you can get a different IP for home. So it can't be purely based on that. But, yes, using a VPN to connect could be a way round it.
  28. HellriderUKDeals69's avatar
I will be saying goodbye to my Turkish Netflix account if it gets blocked.

Just giving me a final excuse to cut Netflix really.

Canada, New Zealand, Portugal and Spain now have Netflix password restrictions.

Although this isn't the new version that was leaked, rather the old one where you have to pay more for people outside of your household.

And how many people are on ChatGPT at the moment with 'I've got a web service that checks to see if I'm on my home network via it's IP address, do you understand?'
  35. Conkers816's avatar
I find it hilarious that countless people have been whining all day about this and it turns out it’s only in Chile, Costa Rica, and Peru at the moment.

Will there be an influx of people going to live chat to reverse their account cancellations?
  36. Flying_Orange's avatar
Ehrm ok. So when this is happening? I need to warn my family.
  37. Stormbringer2012's avatar
So does this mean I will need to sign into my account Via Turkish VPN and watch something every 30 days or all the time as they will see my IP is not a Turkish one and possibly get blocked.
    cartwheelbob's avatar
Was thinking the same. Would need to do on all devices or they get blocked
  38. johnptr126's avatar
Well that will be good bye netflix for me. I just wonder how much extra they estimate to earn with this move.
  39. Grant_C's avatar
The subscription market has got out of control. Back in our parents day this just didnt happen and they were better off for it. I hope this dismantles this kind of business model and put more money in peoples pockets. Its just tv which makes you fat anyway, there is a big world out there. Enjoy it.
