Freeview Recorder For Mum So She Can Ditch Sky TV. Any Recommendations?

Posted 20th Oct 2023 (Posted 8 h, 10 m ago)
Was going to get Mum a Manhattan Freeview Recorder to replace her Sky box. There was supposed to be a new model coming out but it's been months and it's still not out.

Is there a decent alternative she could get?

She's paying over £30 a month for her old, non hd Sky box right now, just for the ability to record programmes. She does have a catch-up TV stick but she prefers to use the Sky box, with remote & recording ability etc...

She doesn't watch any of the Sky channels! £30 a month is an absurd amount to pay just for the recording ability! Because the box is old too she keeps getting messages popping up on BBC channels, they're getting rid of non hd ones.

Need to get her something asap, maybe something with catch-up on it too, 4od, iPlayer etc...

Thanks!

YouView is definitely the best option.

The Sagemcom RTIW387 is the latest model which is used by BT and EE for their Pro TV service but it will work without subscription and any internet provider. An aerial is needed if not being used with a BT/EE subscription though.

CeX is the best place to buy as they sell them with 2 year warranty. £52 C grade, £62 B grade, £75 A grade.

This has the ability to record 4 shows at the same time, and supports all the apps you would expect like BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Netflix, Prime Video, Now TV etc... Pretty much everything except for Disney+ - The one big omission.

Ahhh Someone else recommended this further up. You just answered some of my questions! Wanted to know if needed anything BT related to use it, internet etc... Also, if can use catch-up apps ok.

Thanks very much. Definitely seems like the best price at Cex, with warranty too.

Another plug (sic) for the BT TV Box Pro 4K from CEX with inclusive 2 years trader warranty.
That combination has been the definitive go-to for credible & reliable FV box for quite some time, even when it was priced 30%+ more than current price.

    Yeah seems great!

Been waiting for a new Manhattan box to come out, it's been months now and it has arrived. When I first looked their website it said release was August...

I saw this on eBay when scouting around. So she can just buy one of those & doesn't have to sign up to anything?

A used BT Youview box is the cheapest way to go as already suggested. Make sure you get the PVR version though. Avoid the Talk Talk ones though as they are painfully slow. I ditched Sky a few years back and did just that. No fees, no need to be with BT. I don't think they have wifi though so keep that in mind. There are of course ways around that anyway. (edited)

A few people have recommended the BT TV Box Pro 4k £62 at Cex. Seems great for the price. uk.webuy.com/pro…n=2

I got rid of my sky a few months ago and haven't missed it. I use freeview on my LG, the menu is good and I like the way you can hop straight into the various catch up services from the guide if needed. (its slightly slower than my old sky box but not awful). I know the tv can record if you put a usb stick in the side but I haven't had the need to try it.
It's nice being able to access Disney+, netflix etc through the same remote, and one less device sat under the tv using up a hdmi and plug socket.

Same here, got rid when the box broke, haven't missed it one bit! If I can get Mum a Freeview box sorted she'll save a lot of money. The Sky channels are terrible now, we used to watch a lot of Discovery but the best programmes got put on Discovery plus when that came out. Sky one was good years ago too.

£30 infers she's on some TV package so will she be getting those on the new replacement box?

It's the basic Sky package, but she doesn't actually watch any of the channels from the sub (Discovery, History etc...) Usually just watches the Freeview class channels (BBC, ITV..) She uses the Sky box to record programmes. If she unsubbed from Sky she'd lose that ability. She's just basically paying £30 a month to record things!

You used to be able to just pay £10 a month for the recording ability, but they said can't have that now.

Just had a look & think she'd want something a bit cheaper. Although, that is cheaper than a year of Sky!

They want her to get a Sky Q box but she doesn't even watch any Sky channels, just Freeview ones. It's crazy to have to pay £30 a month just to be able to use her own sky box, they don't even own the thing!

Silly question - she does a TV Aerial? If not, then it's Freesat she's looking at.

Yes, she does have an aerial up.

What TV does she have? She will probably have a Freeview option if it is a recent model. Also check for USB slots, as several TVs can record Freeview through the USB to a stick
