Sonos Beam Compact Smart Soundbar with Alexa built-in in White £320 @ Amazon

Beats price at most other retailers by £40.

The "fuss" is because the massive outlay on Sonos products - buying a 5.1 surround system on Sonos carries a massive price tag and with the beam, for example, it cant even play modern HD audio formats that are found on Blu-ray. For the same price you could have a far better sounding 5.1 surround system with a subwoofer and an AVR, and it would play anything you throw at it. In 10 years time, whilst tech will have moved on, you can still plug any speaker you like into that AVR and enjoy it without needing to rely on a software platform. Thus far the S2 interface for Sonos hasn't delivered anything that has shown it was necessary to do yet, and they could have easily just made those services not compatible with legacy products instead of fragmenting the system. We had several Play 5 gen 1's around the house which we had no problems with. but we had more modern speakers elsewhere. These play 5's were instantly devalued and despite not having any need to upgrade, we had to sell them and buy other speakers purely to keep our system receiving updates and working together, and this makes it harder to replace older speakers/add new speakers to the system (as they will already have upgraded firmware). Sonos is great as a music system but they handled this really poorly and have yet to demonstrate an actual need for it. Why not just make it so if using an as-yet un-launched HD audio service, just make the legacy products not available for playback. you will never have this issue with an AVR and speakers, and they will sound better than any Sonos product will. You can buy an AVR and speakers from the 70s and it will still work.

Can you link an amazon echo show to this?

jamesgreeley

Excellent! Thank you, just what I want! Glad you are enjoying it.

KCooperman

Nothing to stop you unpairing and moving them but it will be a right PITA. Especially if you have trueplayed too. Alternative is to not have the suroounds paired with the beam at all, but as a seperate stereo pair. You can then group/ungroup with the beam for tv as needed, but you wont get 5.1 surround so is not worth it imo.

herrbz

£329 is the max I'd pay for this, not sure why £320 is so hot. I paid <£300 2 years ago, so I'd expect it to be trending a bit cheaper given it's a slightly older product now with the new ARC out (even if that's super expensive).

I’ve just been looking for the EQ settings and I can’t find them on my IPhone app, have you got a PC if you have down load the Sonos app for that and at the top under manage click on settings and you should be in the equaliser adjustment you can then tick loudness and boost treble and bass. See if that has the effect your after.

1mran

That's odd, I have night mode on and still rarely go over 50 percent

DaveLakin

I've tried with both TV signal from the optical input and Spotify connect and both aren't that loud

1mran

There could be a volume sub setting linking audio output to TV volume, see if it gets louder with TV volume or headphone volume turned up or down. If you have another source with optical out and it's louder, then it's your TV :D

DaveLakin

Well I've done a system reset, installed the new sonos s2 app and checked that I'm receiving dolby 5.1 which I am. It sounds OK, but still no louder. At full volume, its not quiet , but it certainly isn't loud.

No one has suggested this in the same standard as a full 5.1 setup and bit rates do not equal enjoyment of a film. Sonos is a compromised product designed for convenience and to integrate into a multi-room setup that supports wireless surrounds/subs if required, for some the compromise is too much but for others it fits their usage fine. No one buys Sonos for ultimate audio fidelty or "cinema standard sound" - which is often pretty terrible in fact. In a similar vein, the vast majority of people will stream their movies these days, they're not getting the super high bitrates of 4K Bluray (and even that is compressed), but again you can quite happily enjoy the experience.

donotneed

Honestly sonos fans have no idea just how much they missed out, of course it sounds good and it's much better than your TV but it is not cinema standard sound in any case.. Yet you are paying more for a full 5.1 than you would for an AV with a 5.1 separate that is much more effort of course Here is the facts Dolby Digital - 640kpbs max DTS - 1.5mb Dolby Digital Plus - 1.7mb DTS HighRes - 6mb Then you move to the proper lossless formats Dolby TRUEHD - 18mb DTS Master Audio - 24.5mb

Blackhorse

Thanks for the reassurance the upgrade is worth it, my TV supports Dolby plus which i understand is a type of Atmos without the metabase. So hopefully will work nice together

wozza2k

Upgraded to the Arc last week, massive upgrade. Struggling to get rid of the Playbar on eBay though!

Idle power draw is about 5W, not awful but not as low as I thought it'd be: https://support.sonos.com/s/article/256?language=en_US

9pth9h8fvb

They’re built to drawer less power in idle of course and be ready play instantly. You could I guess hook them up to a smart plug and then turn them off or schedule them if you wish.

malnuman

Just don't see point of it been on 24/7, esp when I'm in bed and at work... just a waste of power ,

9pth9h8fvb

What would be the reason for turning onto standby though? You can turn off the status lights within the app if they’re a problem?

malnuman

Thanks, thought it was just me not been able to suss it out, would be nice to add that option to the App.. Thanks for quick reply

Shed load cheaper than sonos are selling it for. Still over 600 quid on their own site

chrisredmayne

Surely it depends what your gonna use it for ? If Dolby Atmos is important to you then the arc would be better. But it still sounds awesome, especially when you consider you could get this and two play ones for the same price as the arc. I have the playbar and dont feel any need to upgrade, does exactly what we need and sounds brilliant still. Not like it's a 40 year old speaker, it's still gonna sound amazing now

JHL

Had mine 6 years or so and still an amazing piece of hardware. Pair with some 1/3s for cinema experience, or use as the massive pile of speakers that it is. Can really crank the volume for parties if you have a big enough space/no neighbours Best price I’ve seen in the uk. Had mine cheaper on an overseas trip (forgotten where and how much, thinking £400 ish)

Sheza1

In what way? The ones being dropped from support in the S2 update were discontinued between 2012-2015, which is more than 5 years ago. As for my 'guess' - it's not a guess, it's a commitment from Sonos: https://www.theverge.com/2020/1/21/21075043/sonos-software-updates-ending-play-5-connect-zone-players

tee_tee

I’ve had my playbar since beginning of 2018. I paid £540 then from Currys before the brexit driven price hike. Although I’ve been happy with it I’d rather now save up for the arc. £475 is still a lot of money for old tech.

dimav83

New one? I think it's great. Really. Beam. In my relatively new "average" house, beam becomes uncomfortably loud even at half volume. (room is circa 15sqm) I was surprised, as was not thinking Beam would be so good.

cava83

Arc, fair enough. I miss that too. Beam is good for a smaller room as you've pointed out. The playbar has a much better filling so to speak. New one don't think looks great.

dimav83

No ARC, old hardware. If your room isn't huge, Beam is much better choice, and cheaper. Alternatively, new one looks great.

Depends on so many things. My wife can use Sonos no problem - it turns on when we turn the TV on. No messing round with inputs and no worrying about PCM/Dolby/Am I getting the best from my system etc... It's become our alarm clock in the morning and our multi-room system for when we're cooking/working in another room etc. There are better home cinema systems and there are better individual speakers, but there isn't a better multi-room system that has a perfectly decent home cinema solution too.

VellaRaja

To connect the bluetooth device I guess..because not everyone wants to pay for Prime or youtube music etc subscription. TBH why do you even need SONOS. If you goto Richer Sound or a similar place with budget of 2k to 3k. They can get you music system or home cinema or multi room speaker system 100 better then Sonos. Than again it depends on person...

Well done . There you have it HUKD just state the SOGA to Curry's and you don't need a 5 year warranty for your electric items .

That's all well and good to say, but there's been times when both John Lewis and Richer Sounds have been caught out by Which? During their testing of retailers. Like i said, i agree it's more likely to be honoured without fuss but that doesn't mean the chances are completely eliminated.

What’s the issue people have with optical connections? (Noob here)

wipe0wt2097

This isn’t suddenly going to just stop working, no company is going to charge 500 quid and do that to it’s customer base and royally shoot themselves in n the foot, no chance

Tdholmes

So is spending £499 on a product that is end of life, 7 years old (and looks it) and probably won't be supported at some point in the future. People should be aware a new one is due and this isnt exactly a massive saving.

wipe0wt2097

Who caress about hdmi when you have optical? If you don’t have a decent TV with optical then you don’t deserve this playbar, I’d recommend the sub to go with 2x ones also, unreal sound

Holds its own against much newer soundbars. I hit the play button on this in Currys around Xmas and maxed out the volume. A rep from a LG asked me to turn it down as it was louder than the 2019 soundbar he was trying to demo with a tv (lol) (lol)

I have this and it's great. I hesitated buying this two years ago because a new model was imminent.... Never happened. One should be due to come out though. The sound on this is great. It's just a shame it doesn't support Atmos or ARC but it's old. Nonetheless, I think it's great.

chris_p

Yes I have added a couple of play 1s but still find the bass thin. It doesn't bother me, it's my kitchen and it's more than good enough, it sounds fantastic, but if it was my main listening setup I'd be disappointed with the low end grunt. As with anything, its room dependant. In a smaller room, with a carpet and soft furnishings a sub probably isn't needed.

sam123456789

The app is terrible. I work in software. It sucks. Slow, glitchy, not user friendly. If they u-turned on bricking then good but there's still 6 bricked speakers in my friends garage, and many others. Complete waste. This is a forum for facts, but also opinions. I'm sorry you don't like my opinion. And the facts are that they have bricked thousands of devices. It actually looks like your comment is the useless one.

JaKay

Comments like this that are 50% false and 50% opinion with no context are 100% useless. They 180'ed on the bricking. Why does the app "infuriate" you?
