Is Dolby Atmos worth it? Especially for gaming.

Posted 28th Apr 2023
Hi. I currently have 5.1 receiver surround sound set up for my gaming on TV and movies / series / football on projector.

Wondering whether to get the Samsung Q30b 9.1.4 system for £550 (posted here)

Only a few games support atmos (on PC) and so I don't know how good the virtualisation is for non-supported games.

Ditto for TV shows / movies. I don't watch any blue ray stuff - more Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney Plus etc.

One youtube video suggested not much comes out of the height channel even on on blu rays! But the pros are it's supposed to put you in a "bubble for sounds."

I know I appreciate surround sound much more than directly coming from the front!

How have you found it? Great or meh?

Thanks!

A virtual implementation with a third of the normal speakers for a sound standard that's hardly supported?

It sounds unlikely to be good compared to spending the money on a good implementation for the normal output formats.
