If it’s android auto, it might not need to be plugged in. Make sure Bluetooth and Wi-Fi enabled - clear previous attempts on both phone and any devices already connected to the car and then try again
Also make sure your android phone has android auto enabled
Mine works wirelessly in our car (edited)

That is weird to be fair.

    Most important questions:
    - did you try original cable that came with the phone? (Some cables simply doesn't works, data issues or made for charging only).
    - try "reset" android auto settings on the phone (settings -> android auto -> remove all previously connected cars).

For first time most of the times, if I remember correctly, you need to allow access on the phone, give access to android auto, then finish on the head unit screen.

Had similar problem. Telling the car to forget the phone and the phone to forget the car fixed it for me.

in your phone change usb preferences to file transfer/android auto.

then the first time you plug in your phone to the car, open the maps app to agree the T&C's and warnings

I use a OnePlus.... I've yet to see a cable not work !
When I plug in (and I'm on 11...still needs cable) the phone screen shows options for connection mode, so I select "android auto".... I presume there's a setting to do this permanently, but can't find it.
Having said that though, if you can't get it working with other phones , I'd suspect the car... Go to the dealer and them to sort it.

Don't think it was the OnePlus as I've just bought a pixel 7a and it's the same so think there's a problem with the head unit or I'm being thick

Same thing happened with my wife's phone on a new Sandero Stepway, worked until Samsung/Android updated her phone and not worked since. Works with iPhones and even an Android tablet, so cables and ports are fine.

    Which cable are you using?
My older usb c cables would say they were connected but wouldn't display the maps, or would disconnect often.

I bought an Anker usb c cable and since had no problems.

But it's out of stock (edited)

I have to restart my phone between every 3 to 7 days to get my car (67 plate astra) to recognise it, same for my partners phone, it's annoying.
Android auto, or at least manufacturers implementation of it appears to be poor. (edited)

Mine works with xiaomi phone and kona electric. I found it's only 1 usb port that will connect (other one doesn't even try to start android auto so I don't think that's your problem) and i ise an otterbox cable which works - but only when I have the cable a certain way round (logo facing forward) - but that is because the cable is a bit worn out. If I have the cable the other way round it tries to start but fails.
