Most important questions:
- did you try original cable that came with the phone? (Some cables simply doesn't works, data issues or made for charging only).
- try "reset" android auto settings on the phone (settings -> android auto -> remove all previously connected cars).
For first time most of the times, if I remember correctly, you need to allow access on the phone, give access to android auto, then finish on the head unit screen.
then the first time you plug in your phone to the car, open the maps app to agree the T&C's and warnings
When I plug in (and I'm on 11...still needs cable) the phone screen shows options for connection mode, so I select "android auto".... I presume there's a setting to do this permanently, but can't find it.
Having said that though, if you can't get it working with other phones , I'd suspect the car... Go to the dealer and them to sort it.
My older usb c cables would say they were connected but wouldn't display the maps, or would disconnect often.
I bought an Anker usb c cable and since had no problems.

Android auto, or at least manufacturers implementation of it appears to be poor. (edited)
