Tidal - Argentina Subscribers

I’m assuming everyone’s received the below e-mail? Gutted as I’ve been using it for ages. What’s your plan now? Move onto the next cheapest, or is there a workaround?

Got that a few mins ago. I'm guessing Tidal is trying to combat all the "VPN residents" so I wouldn't be surprised if they copy this in all the different regions.

Might have more to do with the economic meltdown in Argentina.

They currently have 10 different official exchange rates (& 20+ unofficial ones) dependant on what you buy, where you’re from & what you pay with. (edited)

Annoyingly I have to go out soon but I've just been having a quick look.

    Brazil is around £2.51
    Bulgaria £3.93
    Romania £3.46

UAE might be the one though as, at the moment, it appears to be £1.28 but it all depends on getting the payment method accepted of course.

I'm just going to leave it for now and see if the next payment is rejected.

If they truly wanted the custom then they would offer an option for those cards registered outside of Argentina to have an excess charged to cover the cost, which for us would be pennies.
This stinks of greed. They have proven the service can be provided at that price, but are going to screw everyone over anyway

It does say “may” lead to billing failure, so I guess we cross our fingers?

I also got this a few minutes ago. It would be good to see what our alternatives are if payments are stopped.

Yeah I’ve just received the dreaded email to! I wonder what’s next…
It does say it only effects Argentina due to the way the payment is processed but you can bet it happen in all regions (edited)

It could be down to the Argentine Peso dropping off a cliff over the last year. Last year 1GBP would get you 160ARS - Today 1GBP gets you 447ARS.

Would a Crypto card work like Turk PSN?

It was available in Turkey up until November last year apparently.

It's a pity. I probably won't rejoin as I went for a YT Premium deal earlier in the year. I'd love to see the conversion rate from Argentina to UK though - although if it's only 10% it's still profit for them, right?

The email specifically mentions Visa and Mastercard, so maybe changing to an American Express card would work?

Ah well. I was running dual subscriptions with a Deezer account (via Turkey, of course), as Tidal doesn't work on Alexa for the children, so looks like I have to stick with that. The good thing about Deezer is you can pay for an annual subscription, so even if they crackdown you get to see out the rest of the year. However, I'm at work right now so I can't jump on a VPN to see what the current prices are (I did pay 206.90 TL in March for Deezer Premium which was about £12, but is now more like £6).

Can I ask what card you used? Just tried using the Crypto Visa Debit card I use to buy PS5 games and it was declined. I tried Chase and it said I had to change country as I was using a UK card…? Maybe they’ve cracked down on VPN’s too?

Pretty decent actually, Windows app is a bit bare but the phone app is solid and the library is just as good.

If I have to give it up, I probably won’t be too bothered I suppose.

I’ve got YT Music, Spotify and Deezer on my phone as well and Tidal, as good as it is, was probably my least used out of all of them.

Will still try and find another option when I get home though.

I've recieved it this morning too. Seems like i need to create a new account in another location. I don't really want to give it up, given how much i spent on hardware over the last year. New DAC and B&W PX8 headphones.

Following out of interest - I use mine mainly for Sonos and my Pioneer DJ controller (Rekordbox/Pioneer fell out with Spotify a while back). Worst case is just go easy and UK family Hi Fi Plus sub but this time i'll have to charge the extended family/friends for theirs rather than free.

They do accept gift cards, so it might be worth buying those to add credit to your account

What's the best way of purchasing those? Sorry for sounding lazy... Currently at an airport queuing!

Bouncing around various forums, it seems that Tidal has been clamping down on many countries, putting in the same restrictions, using the same excuse, over the last few months.
It is just greed, and the consumer has no choice. When all is digital, you cannot justify the difference between £1 and £15 (ish) per month for the same service for the reason of "because you earn more".
