Email only hosting

Posted 5th Jun 2023
Our family have owned their own domain for around 10 years. We only use this domain for email purposes, long story short we all got fed up with stupid long email address names that the free services give.

Our hosting service has recently decided that for £69 a year they will allow us to continue using their service which comes with 250GB of storage, however they will now limit each email account to a maximum size of 3GB. So, they are more than happy for us to have 83 email accounts up to 3GB in size, but if we go a single MB over on any account they'll slap us with a further £69 to get their "unlimited" email package.

Currently we have 8 email accounts and only three of them are over 3GB in size.

Does anyone know of an email hosting only service, or web hosting service that has email, that does not have this stupid 3GB limit per mailbox and runs to around £70 a year?

Forwarding to Gmail is best bet and not keeping storage on server - that's what I do. IMHO Gmail is best email anyway. Other alternative is to clear storage periodically before it reaches 3 gb - just put reminder in diary.

Less than one-off £20 for lifetime of unlimited number of 10GB mailboxes from a longstanding UK-based limited company.
So pay once and forget about any future renewal fees (until the end of the world or until the end of the limited company).
Includes unlim web hosting with a ridiculous number of features, with no obligation to use it.

One-off £19.99 at time of post early June 2023

and often marketed at a more realistic higher price such as at around Oct 2022:

    Meanwhile back in reality:
the referenced hosting appears to be a resell of an excellent unlimited 20i product

    Gmail.com.

Such a long stupid email address.

You could just use the existing email address as a forwarded and not use any storage on it. I do it with an ancient F2S domain email from back in the day.

I think they were thinking more that they ended up with AlexSmith3242343241212335443543@gmail.com. Difficult to have a professional email if you have a common name without a custom domain

Considered Microsoft small buisness or Amazon workmail?

Amazon workmail works out a bit cheaper for me currently.

If you really want to save the pennies, yep you can get cheap webspace offshore, but you'd be responisible for backing up your own data, so need to weigh up the hassle, risk or losing data. You can check out the webhostingtalk forums.. the last one I used was a host called crocweb, they were pretty good at the time, but recently moved from cpanel to directadmin hosting.. but shouldn't affect email.

G Suite Legacy edition would have been perfect but it is no longer available. Use Gmail and set it up to access these mailboxes, including sending email as if it came from the original mailbox.

I was going to recommend IONOS, but I checked their prices and they are after silly money

£48/year for a single email account
£300/year for 10 accounts on the same domain.

That said, 3GB is pretty large mailbox size for personal use: I guess you are sharing lots of photos with each other, which would probably be more efficient if you shared them as links instead of attachments.

I'm with Ionos and it currently costs me £9.94 incl. per year for Mail Basic and £18 for a .com domain. I also got a £5 refund this year off the .com price after I mentioned Zoho were cheaper over chat.

I have unlimited email addresses that are forwarded to the different 5 mailboxes.

Been with them for at least 15 years with very few issues. (edited)

Another option - Zoho Mail. It became hugely popular after Google threatened last year to start charging for the legacy G Suite (they changed their mind at the last minute after a major backlash - my laziness saved me!). £1 per mailbox per month for 10GB space under the Mail Lite option. I know many who switched to it and are happy with it.

Yes, I've looked into them. It's one of those things where I move from £8 a year to £12 a year. Not exacly life altering, but I guess the people I am with currently offer a very good deal. It's just annoying that I can have 83 accounts with 3 GB each, but cannot have 10 accounts with 5GB each without paying double the cost.

    A question, why email?
Why not use a group WhatsApp or similar?

These are likely individual email boxes as we have in my family. All separate but on our own domain hosted with the legacy G Suite.

That's brave using your real name as an email address and also usernames.

There are a lot of David Robinson's out there, so I'm not worried.

I have used Easily for many years with a name@nameXX.me.uk.

Works fine for any name at the front going to the same inbox (myself and my wife), but my daughter has a separate one. Was £22/year for each for 15Gb but has now gone up. The domain also has to be renewed every so often as well so it's getting to be quite an expensive option.

    Perhap Proton Mail might help.

Doesn't look like I can use our own domain name.
