Garmin Forerunner 245 for £224 @ start fitness + free next day delivery

I've been looking for a good deal on this what since it came out a couple of weeks ago but all site had it at the £250 RRP, and some didn't have it in stock yet. Came across this … Read more

Ordered one of these. Had one in the shopping basket for a couple of days so they emailed a reminder with a 5% voucher code... couldn’t get to them to stack though (lol) . Depending on how it goes, may sell my Apple Watch 3 which I’ve been using for running.

Got the 245 yesterday and coming from a fitbit surge, I'm loving the extract data I'm already getting, I haven't even been for a run yet! ICHING to get out there and get something logged. The fitbit surge did me well but have been running for about a 1.5 years am ready to try and up my game some. You mention the Pod/HRM-Run which funnily I was looking at this morning, again for more info on stride/technique. The only thing I missed was the auto back light when you turn to watch over to check the time, but a quick google and a dive in the backlight setting soon solved this. Very happy with the watch!

They serve different purposes, the VA3M is a casual fitness watch which does a bit of everything to a reasonable level, whereas the 245 is a running specific watch (high level) that also supports various other activities. As a runner I'd go for the 245, I previously had a 225 and currently have a 235, which has worked well for me. The 245 has the new GPS Chipset, ultratrac, new HR sensor with Pulse OX, supports advanced running dynamics via RD Pod/HRM-Run, improved race prediction and training stats (training effect, load, recovery etc), physical buttons (think gloves, rain), more customisable data fields, looks better (VA3M is too smooth), the new maps/coarses also look good/useful. I also use a training app called TrainAsOne, at the moment I have to create and sync workouts manually (PIA) due to Garmin restricting GC apps creating workouts on the 235 however the x45 range can sync workouts via the app. Consider the 645 if you're a runner and want the features from the 245 but also want Garmin pay and a barometer, you'll get it for around the same price as the 245 when deals pop up.

Fair enough. I think the 245 music is a better looking watch and more functional overall but 120 quid more seemed excessive and I'm a fairly keen runner. The vivoactive 3 I bought doesn't transfer data to my mobile or computer so I may have to replace it too! Will try one last time to fix it this weekend

Yeah, I know what you mean - in fact, the vivoactive 3 has a few things the 245 doesn't have, like a golf app and garmin pay and a barometer. I actually bought the Vivoactive 3 Music at 150 from Argos, but haven't opened it. I'll probably bring it back to Argos. The things that swayed me to the 245 are: a) I much prefer the look. b) increased battery life c) audio alerts through headphones whilst running d) newer GPS chip (though I don't know for sure if it's better or not) e) I prefer buttons over a touchscreen All these things are fairly minor though, and if I'm totally honest, I would say that the look of the watch is probably what swayed me the most (very vain I know, but I'm gonna be wearing it every day for years)

Looking at buying a Garmin (with GPS) just for running. I already have a Garmin cycle computer so track all my cycling and walking in the Garmin app - it seems to make sense to track running in the same place. I have no interest in any of the tech features, nor wearing it at all except for running. If just for running, should I buy a Forerunner XX or Vivosport?

Surely the drag + weight will cost a few seconds per mile (lol)

310 here.

:D fair enough

Yes... But could not find one cheaper than £55....therefore the unit would cost the equivalent of £114 which is an excellent price

Is it a normal one, or a swim/tri one? Thanks.

bought this for this price without the HRM couple of weeks ago in Amazon sale :(

Ah the treasure truck is now in Nottingham today and has the watch on board!! So I guess it just takes its time getting around the county.

Can't you just buy a replacement strap without the HRM unit, I don't have one and don't know much about it but thought you could

645 has UltraTrac

Ah, good call. Forgot the FR range use the clip. I have a Vivoactive and it uses the same connector as the Fenix. But yeah, one of those cheap, small ~2000mah lightweight batteries would keep you going for ages I suspect all these watches could be software-enabled to allow UltraTrack but that would give people less reason to buy new Fenixes, I guess :-(

Clip seemed to fit whilst wearing it! OOOOOH, bit of duct tape and you're away.

FWIW, if you start to run low you can plug a portable battery bank into it and it'll still record whilst you're moving. Might mean you lose cadence and HR data as you'll need to take it off your wrist but 10-15 minutes boost will top your battery up for an extra couple of hours

Garmin claims 14 hours GPS active but no music. Should be fine for ultras. Nice smaller watch with lots of features. Note that this watch does not have a triathlon mode or open water swimming if this is of interest to you. If this is the case, you'd be better with the 935. This is an older model so does not do music or Garmin Pay but offers longer battery life and more modes. The 945 should be released soon so that 935 price might come down.

Black is available now (confused) so just ordered, thanks been considering this for a while, but was undecided between this & the 235, but at this price seems worth the difference

I've gone for the blue one as it's a bit different and you can pay for it over 5 months I was going to go for the 235 but thought this is worth the difference although I probably don't need half the features of this or the 235

Garmin watches are not classed as watches on Amazon. If you click through from the Quidco site, you can see what is and isn't included.

I've gone for the 735xt too, went for the blue one as it's a bit different and you can pay for it over 5 months (think they're doing the same on the blue 235 too) Don't know if I need all the features of the 735 (or the 235 for that matter) but thought it was worth the difference and it's only £6 per month more)

Went for the 735xt. Quidco has 11% cash back on purchases made in the watch category. Not sure these garmin are watch category...

Cracking deal on a very good watch. If you want multisport action including cycling, swimming (pool and open water) plus a full triathlon / duathlon mode with transitions then the 735XT is only £30 more

Yep good price indeed :) Cheapest it has been by £10 :)

The watch on its own had been sub £300 in recent weeks. I’d hold off buying one for now as its replacement (the 945) is just around the corner so bigger discounts would seem likely.

On at least one of your email addresses anyway (y)

I can say I've never bought from wiggle.

Is anyone still a new customer by this point!

Nice watch, had mine for 2 years now. As usual there were a few bugs at the beginning but it's running well now (barometer has failed though). The two HRM straps will make at least £40 each on eBay so just about worth buying the pack and selling them, unless you want them of course. I use a separate HRM for cycling and gym activities as it's much more reliable. Optical HR OK for running though. 945 will be out in less than a month with a new HR sensor, Garmin Pay and music storage but will almost certainly cost £500. This is a bit of a bargain for an enthusiast watch although more casual users are better off with a Vivo3 for £150

Yep I've just opened one, it took a few hours as I had to resend my photo id. Hopefully getting my V3 tomorrow

I've had this for a month and I'm not convinced by the wrist based heart rate monitor compared to my old Tom Tom. Its telling me I have a resting heart rate of around 40-45 when its actually 55-65....

I stand corrected; I'll have to make sure I select 'Run indoors' next time I'm in the gym! Thanks (y) Just tested & a 10km treadmill run came out as 9.7km on the watch, so it can be used.

Takes 5 mins to open a Starling account. I opened one specifically to use with my Vivoactive 3 and it works really well.

It can give you speed/distance on a treadmill. This is just based on how much you are swinging your arms, and estimating the length of each step. So maybe not very accurate. Or you could buy a footpod that clips onto your shoe, maybe a bit more accurate.

Oops sorry you're right on vivoactive. The app is called "pool swim" on the Garmin connect store.

Vivoactive 3 is £170 on Amazon and was £160 recently, the 735xt drops to around £190 - 200 on occasions. What's the app called? Not sure how well it will log the activity in comparison, however this is still a great watch for running/cycling and general day to day tracking.

Thanks. They're both around £230 which is a bit more than I'm looking to spend. Done a bit of research and looks like a third party app from the Garmin store can use the sensors to track swimming relatively well.

It's doesn't track swimming, at this price range have a look at the Vivoactive or the 735xt if you like the style of the 235.

Does anyone know if you can store music on this on play through Bluetooth whilst running?

I used mine for a year. It never missed a beat. Found GPS quickly, tracked my runs perfectly. As for size. I'm a guy with skinny arms & this wasn't overly huge. Admittedly it isn't as stylish as the Fitbit range, but I prefer function over style personally.

I see... Seems quite big... Thanks

Costs a bit more but I'm very happy with my Vivoactive 3. Looks less obviously like a running watch than other Garmins but still great for tracking running, swimming, cycling etc. Other advantages over this are Garmin pay and barometer for elevation.

Yes. Install the Garmin Connect app on your phone, and link Strava with your Garmin Connect account. Then when you sync the watch with the phone, it will automatically get copied to Strava.

Great watch, but buy a screen protector, you will scratch it at some point (I did)..

I paid £160 for one the other month. Brilliant watch, finds GPS really quick, monitors HR well. Only gripe would be the Menu layout isn't as simple as my forerunner 35 it replaced. Still a cracking watch & price :)

There are lots of holes in the strap for different sized wrists... I'd say anywhere from xs to xxl

How does it compare to Fitbit Charge 3? - No idea, I don't have a FitBit Charge 3. I had a Blaze and the touch screen let me down during the London Marathon. Water got on it and reset my run....grrrr. App - decent, as you'd expect from Garmin. Small wrist - not sure, but I don't see why not. Females - it is unisex Stylish - not brilliant in the looks, but its functionality is excellent.

Yeah, tbh prefer the buttons especially when on the move. When using the amazfit for cycling, current speed is so delayed so hoping this is better. White has dropped to 98.75 on Amazon so have ordered (y)

It does but you need to be within Bluetooth range of your mobile. As it's not a touch screen you have to use physical buttons to scroll through the message. Garmin does most fitness stuff much better than others imo Check dcrainmaker for its review too

Well it does 35 hours for GPS and heart rate tracking.

I used the amazfit pace while waiting for my Garmin 735xt to be replaced. I found it decent but the GPS would take an age to lock on and even then would sometimes show me randomly running off into a field. I think with GPS and music it quotes around 3 hrs.

22 hours for the Bip, not sure about the rest.

The Epson watches looked interesting, but were discontinued years ago. How long is the actual battery life for the Amizfit, when recording detailed GPS/HR? I can't find any proper specs or reviews.

There is the Amazfit range and the Epson range too. I can only think this is old tech design.
