Can anyone help me make a decision on AMD vs NVIDIA. I have a monitor (x34) which has G-sync so had been considering NVIDIA cards. However the AMD ones seem to much better matched. Shall I just forget about G-sync?

I saw your other conversation thread in here got deleted, I don't think I'm missing out on a good conversation.

People who said "for starters" lol, not wasting my time

I agree, the Vega 56 non blower should be £200 as well. The Vega 56 at 258.99 and the 1660 ti non blower at 249.97 are both overpriced. I'd like to see them push down to £200.

For starters, I wouldn't recommend the Vega 56 nor the 1660 ti for 1440p. Neither can hit 60fps consistently on enough titles. That said. 1% difference at 1080p, 3% difference at 1440p. The sapphire card is listed here. And it costs £9 quid more. Seems about perfectly priced between the two, and they are very closely matched. Plus the 1660ti will have much better future support as the GCN architecture has been discontinued.

Whatever you say

You probably didn't. The average PC gamer honestly doesn't really know what they're talking about half the time, even though they love to pretend they do. This almost definitely would have still performed extremely well for the price, even if better 1660Ti models exist. Heck, it might not even have been so bad at all. It's a fatter heatsink(which has never been a bad thing) only cuz it's a shorter PCB. Probably not the best, but should be sufficient even it 'looks' awkward by sticking out like it does rather than being shallow and looking more enclosed(which isn't really beneficial for an open air cooler anyways).

Exactly. Small ally block by the look Pay £25 more for the Gigabyte Windforce

Well to me it "looks" like poor design/build quality. I doubt it would even get to my door without part of it snapping off.

I gave up, I've had so many back and fourths with various customer service teams, it was causing me stress and they wouldn't budge. The wrong laptop has been collected, once refund has been processed and I've been given an additional £50 into my bank I'll write down details of my experience. Spoiler, I wouldn't shop at Currys again. Well done with receiving the correct laptop! I bought it from John Lewis, they are /were offering £125 gift card when you spend £1000. It's an amazing laptop!!

I received my replacement machine last night. Are you lot still struggling with customer services?

Any updates? I'm still waiting for them to respond by email.

If I actually get it returned and the correct credit amount assigned then I'll upload a screenie of one of the emails. Until they actually back up their claims i'm not sure there is any point.

I am still in the process of arguing the case with Currys customer services, who are trying to refuse any responsibility and to pass the matter over to the local store who ordered the laptop for me. They are both trying to pass it over to each other and will not own up to the way they have changed invoice emails, etc to cover the matter up. Please could you share your screenshot of their promise to replace the pavilion with the omen- it might help me too.

Such small gains, i can't see the 2060 shifting in price, the supers will probably just be overpriced

Not best, but highest frame rate. The vega 56 is a greedy 210w

That's a good point, also the 1660ti can be overclocked to around the reference RTX 2060 performance itself. I think both the 1660 + the ti versions if brought at the RRP are great cards unless you spend too much getting versions with RGB etc

I emailed HP this morning about a new HP Omen 15 model that appeared on their website today, one of the things I was confirming before purchase was storage expansion and they told me HP Omen line has no storage expansion. Long story short they asked me to ring technical support and the chap there eventually confirmed after checking with his colleagues that the new model HP 15-dc1044na and also the one posted here can take a sata hard drive up to 2 TB but he was adamant both models could not take an additional SSD. I decided to buy the new model and went online but HP had increased price by £150! Naughty by HP but next time I might just dive in and ask questions later :).I have 10% off with my energy provider too so missed a rather good RTX 2060 deal ---edit----managed to get the RTX 2060 deal after all via my energy supplier. The price never increased on their side.

Just had confirmation from quidco cashback does not apply to HP site once OMEN10 voucher is used.Voucher has to be listed on Quidco site for cashback to be valid. Also spent ten mins going through HP site but no way to ring support, only telephone number is for sales, i guess if you have an issue you have to register product and hope that you can send them an email.Might bite the bullet and pay the £15 for Box delivery.

Don't think any was provided (I have since reinstalled Windows so can't check) but I'm on the look out for solutions and will update if I find anything. Also I upgraded the ram today with the Crucial memory that was mentioned on page 1 and it's working fine. Web browsers are so demanding these days >_>

I noticed that earlier and thought aboout posting, great to have a choice.Box charge £15 for me though for delivery but maybe their customer service is better than HP, no idea as never used Box before myself.Quidco have a fash sale on today with either 4 or 6 % cashback on HP laptops although i am not sure if it would pay out as a voucher used (OMEN10) even though its an official voucher.£36 Quidco not bad (4%).I might try phoning box to see how long it takes to speak to a human as i mind about 2 years ago trying to get through to HP customer services and failing miserably.

Thanks again for more feedback, did you happen to see if there is any software provided to monitor / change fan speed? Have seen a few reviews now praising the screen on the Omen.

It seems like you're just lucky to get one for £90 all in. The cheapest i7 4790 for 'buy it now' on ebay is currently £120. The last auction finished for £114.50 total..... So I'm going to have to disagree. I'm also going to have to say that spending so much and putting it on a old cheap chipset with a stock cooler is less than ideal. I simply would not be spending well over £100 on such an old CPU on an old used motherboard. Any of it could fail tomorrow, it's all going to be about 5 years old. Considering Ryzen prices are dropping all the time along with DDR4 it's a great time to set that money aside and spend it on a platform with a future. Roughly double that £115 and you have a six core Ryzen, a decent board and 8GB DDR4. That's 2 more cores, a platform with a future and potential upgrades, updated to DDR4 RAM and everything is brand new, warrantied. It's a personal choice, but I would never be spending so much on a dead platform. Seems such a waste when there is no long term future for it.

I'm not seeing any voucher discount, am I missing something?

Luckily her monitor is a 24 inch LG 40-60hz freesync 1080p model.

Its a great 1080p / 60 rig. There is literally NOTHING you can buy that will change that worth the money, except a freesync monitor. (just bear it in mind) If you want to know what I mean by that just occasionally on not ultra settings you will get dips to 45 fps from the 290 gpu (its no biggee) Live with it, when you need a new monitor buy freesync, you will think you get another 15 fps. ;#}

Get dealGet deal

You have to wornder if that was a theft buy the warehouse staff. A lot of dodgy stuff goes on at Polish warehouses, just look at all the EGlobal and Gearbest deals; the ONLY way they can get their stuff into the EU without paying taxes is to bride Bonded warehouse staff.

I ordered a card last year from Amazon warehouse and instead of a "like new 1070 ti" got a old hard disk and cd rom drive in a evga box. They even stuck the evga sticker on the hard disk circuit board, which made it look legit from the the outside, school boy error on myside as the back of the card would of had a metal backplate. The product was shipped from a amazon eastern European ware house (Poland) which ended up being my saving grace, as there a English label on the outside of the parcel which indicated a weight error of the parcel. As it weighed more than what the actual card would of been, yet it was still dispatched (horror) Had to send them a copy of the weight error label and send the parcel back to get my refund.

Bah! Fiddle sticks! More things I need to consider... :) thank you.

If you enjoy older games, NV cards may not be for you, for example, there are LOTS of issues with NV gfx cards when playing LOTRO in dx9 - sometimes/some areas dx10/11 is just too laggy. Both AMD and NV have been trying to ditch dx9 support, both announced and then pulled back from the brink a few years ago, but since then dx9 has been more than a little flaky on NV cards, including newer drivers for older cards.

I've been put off with the 580s power consumption as well. But supposedly when it's not gaming there isn't much difference with an nvidia. My power usage with a 1050 and 1300x is showing at around 40-60watts on average while surfing. The 1050 max power consumption is only 75watts which is alot less than any card i upgrade to.....if i do upgrade.

good deal for a good product

The 1660ti matches/beats the 1070, so if you are willing to pay a bit more, that's a fine option. The product stack for NVIDIA right now has no place for the 1060 or 1070 at their current prices. They need to be cheaper before I'd suggest buying them. 1060 6GB should be 140-150 (Or 30 quid cheaper than the 1660). 1070 should be 200-220 (Or just 20 quid cheaper than the 1660ti).

I hadn't seen the 1660 that cheap. I agree that if you can get a 1660 for £15-20 more, than that would be a better card to go for. You could also say, I as already have, that the 1070 for £30 would be even better. I guess it comes down to how long you're prepared to wait for a specific card as a specific price point. As for the performance of the GTX 1060 in the games you highlight, I take your point. But, I would counter that a £400 graphics card (Vega 64) struggles to hit 60fps in some of those games. As has been the case for quite a while, the best price/performance GFX card for a given budget is highly dependant on the games you want to play.

If you are arguing for bang/to/buck the 1660 (non TI) is simply better value than the 1060. There was a deal for 176 and one for 180 on HotUkDeals and the 1060's cheapest recent deal was 169.99. The 1660 is 18-25% faster (18 no OC, 25 if you OC both and then compare). So best bang for buck is the 1660. And I don't agree that the 1060 6gb can handle max settings 60fps 1080 on all games. The first game on this review is sub 60fps at 1080p. 6 out of 23 (I think it's 23) were below 60 fps. Some were just above, with minimum FPS very likely dipping below with 1% and .1% showing the same. So that 20% boost from the 1660, at basically a few quid more, is well worth it.

The 2200G is a very weak CPU and you'll find yourself CPU limited if you pair it with any decent graphics card. You'll need to upgrade both eventually. If you don't want to upgrade both then you shouldn't upgrade your GPU further than say an RX570, there's no point pairing a graphics card that's much more powerful than that with a weak CPU long term, you're just wasting money on a graphics card that doesn't get used to it's full potential. If you want to upgrade both then this is a decent deal if all you want is 1080p gaming. The 1660ti will struggle in 1440p. If you want to aim for 1440p capability then I'd maybe go with a RTX 2060 (£300) and buy an old R7 1700 (£150) or wait until AMD 3000 CPUs and Navi 10/12 GPUs are released later this year, there's rumours of some very good performance increases coming at mid price ranges. Which is why you're seeing these deals, retailers are trying to shift their stock to make room for AMDs next generation. If that's true you might get a much better deal by waiting 3 months, nvidia may also drop their prices to compete if that happens (or AMDs new kit flops and you end up having waited several months for nothing, nobody can predict the future ;) )

I actually bought a GTX1070 on launch and that price does not reflect the average cost of those cards. It had a paper launch. It was impossible to get hold of. There was no stock. You couldn't get any model they sold out in minutes, with several misleading pre order deals. I know, because I was one waiting impatiently. You posted a very short lived deal that was not sustained for more than a couple weeks, one few people could buy. It took until well into August to fill the channel. By the point you could actually get hold of a GTX1070 without jumping on limited stock nearly every model was in excess of £400. Post Brexit referendum everything went up in price. I also bought 16GB DDR4 3200MHz for £67 in June of that year. That wasn't a limited price that was just the cost of it! I do recognize however that immediately after that prices shot up and today we still aren't back down to that price. Most people then weren't fortunate to pay that amount for RAM, similar to GTX1070 prices which were definitely >£400 for a long time.

It was £360 when it came out, not £450. It is progress, but it's about £130 saving in 2.5 years, that's very slow progress. :(

If you look at the full lineup of 1070s, you'll see they don't all perform as well as the MSI, so I would actually just say it was a 'wash' here.. Looking at a handful of 1070 and 1660ti cards, they are identical. I left off the 2 above, so add them if you want. But both have similar OC profiles/ranges, so no, I would would say they OC identical, giving the 1660ti the decisive edge. Often times games will take up all available VRAM even if they don't use it. I would question if Skyrim is actually using those 8 GB of VRAM or if it is just filling it with unused textures (which can reduce SOME load time, but not much). 1070 10.8% 10.2% 1660ti 12.5% 10.3% 9.2% 8.6% (but this has a higher default clock).

Skyrim is extremely cpu intensive since it only uses 2 cores, so if you want consistent 60 fps you'd need an i7 8700k or better. I have skyrim as heavily modded as it can get my vega 56 doesn't even bat an eyelid at 1440p, let alone 1080p. My 2600x, however, massively bottlenecks the system due to poor single core performance. Only at 1800p does the game become gpu bound, and the game isn't even well optimized for amd gpus. The vram usage, however, easily caps the 8gb at 1440p and actually results in crashes at 1800p, so I doubt a 1660ti would survive, even with the faster memory. As for the oc performance, my guess was somewhat right. The 1070 does oc better, I just thought the difference was bigger than that. I suppose for normal usage, the 1660ti is probably the better pick then.

No, not true at all about the OC. This is the best/one of the best OC card types. 9.6 versus 12.8. You don't even make up for the lost 5% in the base. They are in a dead heat here. (The OC chart compares OCs, not stock) The GDDR6 is a better and may actually allow for better graphics. If you buy the 1070 or the 1660ti for 4k you will have a bad time. As for extreme skyrim modding? I really don't know the answer, I think it's a crap shoot and you'd be best getting a 2070, which is a lot more. I think the 1070 and the 1660ti will fair about the same in heavily modded skyrim as the 1660ti has better RAM. I've heard/seen the 1070 struggle to hit 60 FPS in skyrim with a decent amount of mods at 1080p, so if that's your big cup of tea, I think neither of the cards is the answer.

They will still sell loads despite this. I bet if you look at the steam hardware survey is 6 months time there will be more GTX1660ti users than Vega 56 users.

Ditto I was kinda hoping they would price this a bit below the vega 56 but i dunno what crack nvidia is on to think an inferior card would sell at the same price as the vega 56 expect to see a price drop soon when none have sold. Bit guttered as i was waitin to see how this performed because im due a new card looks like its gonna be a vega 56 im sure my Corsair 850w psu will handle it :D

It is about the same as a 1070, usually much slower than a 1080
