HP contacted me today about the screen brgihtness issue. They took some diagnostic details from my machine and sent it off to their Tech team to analise. It looks like my unit is still going to need replaced until the work out a fix, if it's even possible. Has anyone else with the brightness issue managed to get theirs sorted yet? Thanks.

caramelfish

Not major issues to be honest! Temps just seemed a bit inconsistent with the CPU - sometimes it'd be running mid 60s when idling, that kind of thing. When gaming max was 90, which isn't much of an issue but loads of reviews say they've been reaching max temps of 80ish. If I hadn't been sending my unit in for repair I wouldn't have even cared, but because I was sending it in I thought I might as well bring it up in the hopes they do a repaste or something. GPU temps were fine, really good actually so no worries there. Honestly with the 3 year care package with HP I have no worries because I know I'm likely going to be covered for any issues that arise as long as I can prove its not user error etc. Also common feedback of this laptop is the amazing temps and cooling setup so I don't think temps are something you need to be concerned about. Like I said I just mentioned it because my unit is going in for repair anyway so can't hurt to have it inspected.

quantum77

What issue did you have with temps? I can live with brightness issue, but a self destructing laptop XD

vipergrm

That looks a cracking deal. I'd be all over that if I was on the lookout for a desktop machine.

Perfect - all makes sense, thank you.

One notch is fine, I bought this one, which is nvme. The one already in the laptop can only be described as a mini m.2 which requires an adapter to fit. The one linked is full size and screws in perfectly. Remember you will need to clone the existing m.2 or install Windows again. I used Macrium to clone mine. Simply create an image of your current disk on a spare HDD then create the Macrium rescue media on another HDD (or create partitions on one HDD). Swap the m.2 disk, Enter BIOS (pinhole button on right side) and boot from your external media and select your Macrium rescue media. Next select your image and restore it to your new drive. Done. Good luck!

ZTriv

On the off-chance you see this, can I ask what SSD upgrade you went for? I'm trying to figure out what type of SSD I should be looking for to upgrade it and originally thought I could upgrade it with this one which is also an M2 2280 - like what I believe is in this laptop. The thing is the connector looks different (one notch, vs two), and I don't know the naming conventions well enough to know what I should be searching for to find ones that are compatible with my laptop. I guess what I'm asking is, what is the M2 SSD variation with 2 notches called (i.e. the one that's in this laptop)?

Mao_Sheng

OMG, definitely a good and better deal. Is this new from a box?

This is an absolutely amazing deal. I just bought it this morning (from Birstall Leeds) and can confirm 144hz screen. Thanks so much for posting. My Dell Inspiron 7000 stopped working on Friday. I have kept my eye on this deal and watchedand read loads of reviews online. There are very few cons but mostly pros and that's when it was listed at 1200 euros around 10 months ago... ...At £740 it's a steal! I also managed to pay with £700 of 7% discounted vouchers using the Hapi/iSmile app from work so I actually paid ~£690. Thrilled."

Thought I'd update this several weeks later saying that the ASA investigated it and found that the advertisement was in fact incorrect, Currys have since partially updated the site to say it has a 3-cell Lithium Ion battery but they've kept the existing battery life total of 7 hours which is even worse now as it's partially right and partially wrong.... but at least they've admitted that the model advertised is different to the model provided.

deleted2524254

Regarding the missing cable, I found it inside a separate compartment in the box, where I was expecting to find it beside the drive caddy in the laptop. All working nicely.

deleted2524254

So that gaming period was 1hr 12 mins and it is a 48 WHr battery according to that report. There is one issue when using Silent gaming mode, and doing anything cpu + gpu. That is where big temperature spikes come from. The fans also take too long to spin up. Anyway I'm happy.

Coombes

Yeah I'll admit I was surprised with the temps they way people went on I thought it was gonna be throttle city but I moved the SSD to the other slot away from the heat pipe and that lowered temps by about 5-10*c and turning off the boost keeps temps at about 60 absolute max gaming with little to no impact

deleted2524254

Yup can do. I'm sure it said 48Whr on the batt when I replaced the RAM. Got a spare 8gb stick, if anyone who buys this is interested? I can give a run done of temps I've gotten too. My conclusion this far is that the cooling system is adequate for most cases.

Great price for the spec. The RAM and storage is a bit stingy but those are the things you can fix easily and cheaply. CPU should be fine for a while and GPU is good. It probably looks like a worse deal if you completely misread the specs and assume it’s 4GB and 128GB SSD only... It’s also the G7 so the top of the G range and it is very solid and well-built, not far off Alienware quality tbh, all the G series are nice enough.

MR_Psyco

It is a 17 inch laptop so they do demand a bit of a premium, I think given the spec it's an ok price.

Believe me, even this good price is a bunch of money, having bad luck from the start is a good reason to stay away, especially when competition is huge. Had used many brands indeed and had an Inspiron in the past that survived for years, but wasn't impressed. With this new one, before it died I was disappointed by its weight and bulky form. It's weird how plastic feels, even if its made from metal. Touchpad is insensitive and buttons clicks, fan is very active when you do simplest tasks. If you have a dell, you want to hear good things about it, but for me, whilst hp, asus, lenovo and tens of brands are on the market, dell will be a no.

Anyone have any links to such a laptop at that price?

Nujol

Oh yes it was the new Ryzen 7 4800H I was looking at. Cheers for the advice :)

Pauley-B

I would go for a I7 9750h or Ryzen 5 4600h as a minimum, with a 1660ti as a minimum at £1k Avoid Ryzen 7 3750h like the plague

Nujol

My situation here is that I’ve been wanting to get a gaming machine around the £1000 mark for a couple of months, got back into gaming recently having not really played much on PC since around the mid-2000s (completed GTA San Andreas on PC around that time) - more recently been playing on the Xbox and more casual games with my kids as they grow up. So have been getting familiar with all the recent info and it’s a total minefield! I think I have figured out that what I want is (I appreciate this is an odd order but some things are easier to fathom than others): 16gb ram Min 512 SSD / probably 1tb (no traditional HDD) The new Ryzen 7 4800H looks ridiculous in the benchmarks so probably that, but so far everything I’ve seen is well over £1000 and misses out on my other features A faster screen so 120/144Hz, 1080p is fine It looks like having the FreeSync/G-sync is a good option And then as for the GPU - well that is where I am totally stuck! Probably thinking all of this in a laptop just because I can move it around the house then. But yeah what a minefield!

Pauley-B

I agree, and it’s made worse by the disparity between laptop and desktop parts. Perhaps they should name them differently. For example on desktop a 1070 and 1660ti trade blows with a RTX 2060 being a fair bit better than both But on laptop there is practically zero difference between a 1660ti and 2060, with a 1070 having a clear lead unless it’s a Max Q Bonkers

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Recommended RequirementsRAM: 12 GB 8GB is too small with some of the more intensive modern games requiring over 8GB now. If it's easy to install 8GB RAM in this laptop then it's a good deal.

Shaftydude

Screen ips and nits range?

Joe90_guy

Yeah. I think the same. 8GB is plenty for gaming. Of course if you run your games at the lowest possible graphics settings, to get the highest possible FPS, then it will make a difference but why would any sane person do that?

I got one off the Outlet a few months ago. Runs most games at max at 1080p without issue. Very quick and performs well. Gets hot though because the chassis is quite thin and the cooling isn't amazing. But if you want a lighter, cheaper gaming laptop that you use for a mix of activities (not just gaming) I think it's great. Outlet price was £750.

I mean, this won’t be for everyone but I’ve bought an LGC9 for £1169 which outputs 120hz gaming so my Xbox x is great on it. I’ve then an nvidia shield which I then play some really good games using GeForce now (pc cloud machine) on ultra settings, that cost £200 at the time so I’m gaming on a 55 inch gaming monitor for £1369 powered by 9k of hardware and the results are outstanding. Just thinking this is a lot of money to spend on a tiny screen with tinny sound if your goal is to game.... Because fools do not have pee'in contest and then contradict themselves going "of course I do not regret" followed by "actually I do regret a little ", call people Nazi's or 4 years olds and all sorts of fabricated aspersions they can muster rather than stick to what is right. If proof is in the pudding then we are here. You can not separate the hardware from the software as one without the other does not work very well for most people and are built upon one another. Lets take Meltdown or Spectre - the biggest two that hit the news and what many variants are based upon. They aim to leverage out of order/speculative/branch execution to gain access to the OS (the OS trying to gain access itself being software ) be that kernel or other user context. The means to gain access to that exploit is from running a binary (software). So that be software leveraged (first breach) to gain access via hardware flaws (second breach cache/out of order execution/speculative injection, branch injection so on and so forth) to gain privilege in software context beyond what that they should have. You will also note the majority of approaches to mitigate are software based. This would obviously be me being a 4 year old again Getting the triple with ego and Nazi though is a classic and now fool and Self fantasist - just love it - thankyou :)

dippdopp

Your just, it would seem, a fool tbh and I would go so far as to say Self fantasist. It also seems you can't properly differentiate between hardware and software vulnerabilities and have attempted/mistakenly tried to confer one on the other. The 'grammer nazi' comment was in relation to your ridiculous argument regarding the use of grammer (so you started that in fact). Anyway, as I still have a life, im done here. Enjoy your personal 'nuhu nananananananana' finger in ears life.

Bertz99

So we have from you that I have the skills of a 4 year old boy, that I am trying to fluff my own ego (laughable with the above pee'ing contest) and now the oh so classic Nazi (really not my issue if you can not use the words you mean to adequately describe things). What I do know from our discussions is you have no understanding of VLSI or that every CPU produced has flaws, that as those flaws are found and exploited what they mean, where industry is testing them and how (including why there is presently a stronger correlation with Intel), where the white papers from the formal bodies are available and what the flaws would mean to industry or end user buying PC's. If you had ever read and understood one you might (as you put to me) actually learn something.

Did anyone manage to figure out if the model on Lenovo's own website has the good screen?

DanteAngelus

Agree - a little confusing. Typed in the part number of £899.99 model from the Lenovo site in Google and found it linked directly to a tech spec sheet for the 15IRH (https://psref.lenovo.com/Detail/Lenovo Laptops/Lenovo_Legion_Y54015IRH?M=81SX0026UK) Also when I add the newsletter code or the legion10 code offered, it flashes up with a cant add to basket, need to call the sale line.. works with the other legion 540 varieties though

Is that the same screen though? I think that's a y540 15 instead of y540 15irh. It doesn't mention 144hz for that model. I think they also have a 60hz version and it's not really clear which one is which.

The 980ti is a toasty card, it turbo boost until it gets to 80-84 degrees.

I'm noticing the temps in my case are pretty high. Dont think the 980ti is helping as it takes up half the case!

Vomit

Same boat here... Managed to get hold of a 980ti for £100 and I'm super happy with it. However I am tempted to get something like this for the power savings and freesync support.

shamus21

Yes you can say that again.

I've bought and returned 3 BN cards since I owned my 970gtx(still with it, paid 120£ 3.5y ago, bought it second hand just before the 10 series went out). I've tested those new gens and was trying to justify my purchases but never happened and ended up returning them. It's all gimmicks and marketing nowadays, drivers making cards slow or speed them up. My g sync screen paid crucial role what cards should I get, all Nvidia crappy overpriced products bear in mind I play on 1080p .In my case I couldn't justify giving my money for those shiny new products, which performed better but not that much to spend that kind of money on them. YouTube is full of videos comparing GPUs spend some time researching. Nvidia stopped supplying some reviewers with gpus as they were honest. I am sure you won't believe me so buy and test. Then think and try to justify your purchases if you can great!
