Car Hire Advice for Malaga

Posted 15th May 2023
I'm planning family holiday to Malaga and surrounding areas. I'll be looking to hire a car for a week. Would it be cheaper to hire the car there rather than from here through usual comparison sites? What works best from your experience?

Book before and use a reputable company. Most are very dodgy, especially goldcar!

We used malagacars.com last week and got a near new group c car for £142 for a week (includes full insurance and zero excess)

When you go to pick up the car you WILL be bombarded with pressure to take out their 'additional excess insurance' - this means that god forbid anything did happen to the car you won't have to pay any excess charge. However, at pick up points this can be extortionate prices. Better to book it before you go and decline it at the airport car pick up - this can be as low as £20 for the week booking it before you go rather than £50/£60 a day at the airport. They may ask you for a refundable deposit (normally between £500 to £1000) on the credit card you used to book the car hire. However, again, god forbid anything happens and they take your deposit, just claim off the policy you bought before you went.

Or just take out excess insurance separately from a UK company before you leave for a couple of quid.

Ok mobility are a decent company the have a very good offer on their website now & are in the terminal at Malaga. Also record go. But definitely make sure you get the excess insurance from over here.

Better off searching up Malaga on TripAdvisor then go down to forum and ask on there. 9/10 times you will probably get a lot of responses from people who recommend cheaper local based firms who you can still book direct with.

Zest Car Rental is my goto everytime, decent prices and the rental companies who they work with don't take the p*ss or they get the boot, whenever i have needed customer assistance they are UK based and super helpful (just my experience) !

Impossible to say. My advice is if you think it's too expensive over here then risk it. If you think it's a decent price then book it. I've had European car hire for as little as £7 per day but for my next trip in August they're asking for circa £30 per day. It all depends on time of year and country you visit. Oh and make sure you get insurance excess waiver from over here from any comparison site. You should only pay about £7/£8 (edited)

Many moons ago we rented from Malaga Car, they were brill. Didn't give us the hard sell at all - we did take out excess cover insurance before we left though.
