Hard drive not showing up on laptop to format

Posted 17th May 2023
To cut a long story short I have an asus laptop and it was running slow and crashing in photoshop so I reset the laptop.I couldn’t boot the laptop after because it was asking for a bitlocker recovery key which I didn’t have.I took the m.2 ssd out and formatted it and have now put it back in to reinstall windows 10 and the ssd isn’t showing up.I went into the bios and it shows up in there but it isn’t showing up in the boot menu.
I went into “troubleshooting” on the windows and used the command prompt to format the the ssd again while inside the laptop but it’s not showing up there.
Any ideas ?

You may need a storage driver. Check the ASUS drivers page.

I had the same problem with a P3. It only showed up is diskpart but had storage of 0Mb. Everywhere else it didn't show.

Scan told me on crucials website there was information on how to fix but I just sent it back.

I guess m.2s dont like formatting much.

    Is it a crucial P3?

Is the m2 drive an older ngff / sata one or nvme / PCIe, what make and model is it?

When you say, you took it out to format it. What did you do, Connect it to a desktop m2 slot, usb connection or something else ?

Do you know how it was originally configured, mbr or gpt, did you alter it or just did a full format or quick format?

Have you tried checking it on the machine you formated it on? If you can see it, on that. Maybe install the manufacturers ssd app, run a test or update its firmware and try again.

Have you tried booting the laptop from a usb stick to run diagnosis or  with the windows installer on or a cd if it's old? (edited)

This is the ssd drive and this is the laptop(pictures).
I formatted it using an m.2 portable enclosure with a quick format and I can’t remember how it was configured unfortunately.I booted from a usb drive I created using the Microsoft website for windows 10

might need to be initialised in windows..

    easeus.com/par…tml

" After you get your new SSD, you need to initialize it before using it with Windows 10. An uninitialized SSD can appear in BIOS but not Windows like File Explorer or Disk Management utilities

Step 1. Open EaseUS Partition Master and got to Partition Manager.

Step 2. Right-click the target disk - HDD or SSD and select "Initialize to MBR" or "Initialize to GPT". Click "Execute Task" and "Apply" to save the changes. "

not used easeus partition master myself though, other partition software should do the same job if you have a preferred alternative.

@scorpio.iscariot Have you tried my suggestion yet? It is likely to be the culprit if the drive is nVMe.

On the Windows installer setup screen, there's an option to load an external driver. Point it at a USB stick with an uncompressed copy of the storage driver from the Asus downloads page for your laptop. (edited)
