I've got a load of negatives from years ago whch I'd like to scan to see what they contain, I also have lots of letters etc which I want to scan before disposing of them, can you recommend a good one which produces good results quickly.

sorted byI haven't used the scanner for documents as I find it easier to using the scan function on the printer.
The Epson is available on ebay for £119 up to £170.

Don't forget, that once you've scanned all your negatives, you can sell it on ebay for a chunk of change back.
Don't skimp on the negative scanner: a Perfection will give you all the quality you will need.
For letters, buy the cheapest scanner with an ADF (auto doc feeder). Your sanity will thank you.
I like Brother as they work and they can do decent pdf scans easily.
I've used all the above mentioned methods and PM is quick, cost effective and produces surprisingly good results.
I've used it many times to send documents and never had a problem
