Mesh recommendations

Posted 5th Jun 2023
Hey guys,

We're doing up our summerhouse type thing and I'd like the WiFi to extend to there to do smart type stuff like Hue, Eufy etc as well as just general Internet access.

We're on Vodafone at the moment, a speed test on my phone tells me I'm getting 62 Mbps.

We're not especially heavy users, streaming mostly on say Netflix, I player etc and we don't game.

Essentially I'm looking for suggestions for a three node mesh, one next to the router, one somewhere else towards the back of the house, and one in the garden room, which would have a hue bridge hanging off it.

I want to maintain the speed I have now, and (as I believe is the point with a nesh network) just have one set of credentials - not say acb abs abc_ext etc.

Side note, could I give the mesh the same ssid and password as I have now to prevent changing details on umpteen devices like thermostats, laptops, tvs, Google home thingies etc!

But of a ramble lol, thanks for reading!

Cheers, I have seen Deco mentioned a few times, must be one of the most confusing product lineups though! M4, S7, and countless other varients

M4 3 pack is £100 from Argos, less if you have vouchers .

Purchased these last month and they've been great. Would highly recommend for your usage

I have the TP link x60 and x50, and its been amazing! eliminated all the dead spots in the house and works flawlessly. What I did was change the wifi name and password to that of the virgin router and everything reconnected.

We have thick stone walls and have found Tenda MW3 excellent - currently on Amazon from £35 for used or £49 for set of 3 new.
Regarding the ssid and passwords, I've found some things do connect and some need to be changed, (that's not much help really is it!!)

I had MW3s too. the signal range was excellent but I found that whenever I tried to play music on an echo/echo dot it would randomly stop. Never happened when connected to the router and I've had no problem since replacing them with a different system. Its also pretty slow, I was getting about ~35mbps on the secondary nodes

Using Tenda Nova around the house and it extends into the garden so we can use Spotify on the stereo at the end of the garden - all dead spots around the house eliminated - only had one issue and a reboot resolved it.

Re passwords - you will have to reconnect to the new network I assume as everything in my house was connected to the Virgin Media box now only a handful of things are (edited)

Or you just set the new network to the same details as the old network and you don't need to reconnect anything

I have the Tenda Nova MW12s and can highly recommend it.

I have Virgin 350 and get at least 300 around most of the house.

The office is around 5 meters away from the house and still gets a decent signal in there. I did add PLA as I need rock solid signal for work.

It's not the cheapest setup but is a tri-band system so should help with keeping a stable connection.

As a bit of an aside, WiFi powerline adaptors.. Would they simply duplicate the existing WiFi network, or would they be the _ext or _new type situation you get with with WiFi extenders?

Whilst a mesh would solve the problem, this may also do the same - and we have no issues with WiFi in the house really.

Was just reading some articles on the mesh options and this was a side link.

I know my oldskool homeplugs, wired, always worked well!
