Superdrug To Cut Cost Of Their Sun Cream Range Among Cost Of Living Crisis

Posted 31st May 2023
Hello everybody,

I just read about this and I thought it could be interesting to talk about it.

Superdrug, starting from today, will reduce price of their own brand sun care range by 20% among cost of living crisis.

It might seem an odd thing to think about price-wise but as we standing, sun-care products are considered cosmetic items and therefore there is VAT on them and this needed to change ages ago.

Melanoma skin cancer is the 5th most common cancer in the UK, accounting for 4% of all new cancer cases and being able to affod SPF to protect adult and children should be a no-brainer as sun protection is a healthcare essential.

As of right now with the COL crisis not going anywhere, one in ten people across the UK do not wear sunscreen because it is too expensive, reported Melanoma Focus, and people on the very lowest incomes are also less likely to wear sunscreen than any other economic group.

The announcement from the giant beauty retailer comes after months of rising pressure on the government to remove the Value Added Tax (VAT) on sun care, as requests for donations for this type of product have recently grown exponentially with less and less people being able to afford it.

Superdrug shoppers will be able to pick up products from their Solait range as little as £2.79 for a 75ml spf50 roll-on.

This is what Superdrug’s Own Brand Director, Jamie Archer, had to say on the matter: “As a leading accessible health and beauty retailer, we believe that everyone should have access to the products that protect their health and wellbeing and at an affordable price. Sunscreen is currently classed as a cosmetic product and therefore carries the VAT associated with it, making it unaffordable for some people.

“Through our work with Beauty Banks we know that requests for donations of sun care products has gone up, with some people even having to forego it altogether, which is concerning to hear. We hope that by reducing the price of our Solait range we can help make sun protection more affordable and allow families to stay safe in the sun.”

Also, Susanna Daniels, CEO of Melanoma Focus, commented: “Anything we can do to make sunscreen more accessible and affordable will cut the overall incidence of skin cancer and could help save lives.

“This move by Superdrug is a big step in the right direction and a brilliant start to our mission to have VAT removed from all high-factor sun screens across the UK."
