hahaha, made my day! Scalpers on ebay.... then again I can't imagine there's much profit on each one. Like £20 max

Why not just get a s/hand camera from CEX. There hasn't been much development in compact cameras as its a collapsing market. I still feel a compact camera is far better than a smartphone except for the premium end of smartphones on a quality level but compact cameras are so much easier to use and create what you want. Something like this at CEX will give you 4k 16:9 images. https://uk.webuy.com/product-detail?id=sdigolyvg120b&categoryName=cameras-compact&superCatName=electronics&title=olympus-vg-120-14m-b I've got an Olympus VG-150 which is similar and its a super compact, absolutely tiny, very easy to carry about, it weighs nothing but the results are superb I think. Maybe I'm not as fussy as others though. An image here at full optical zoom. I can tell you with both my old smartphone recently replaced and my new phone they could not create images anywhere near that quality because they would be forced to digitally zoom not optically and they are budget phones anyway with reasonable sensors but fixed aperture. https://ibb.co/p2MS8yB Also have an old Casio which I used this morning; https://ibb.co/x8P28nJ I had to be quick as the birds were moving and I used the maximum optical zoom on the Casio. As long as the cameras is 12 megapixel or more you can do 4k images at 16:9 and to be honest the best display I have is a 49" 4k tv. A bridge camera is another possibility if you like to use zoom for a lot of your images. Then of course for ultimate quality a DSLR with a very large sensor that captures more detail. Personally I'm more than happy with compact camera image quality. I just like to travel to different places and take a few images of where I've been.

Does'nt appear as if any sharepening settings have been configured in the camera at a guess.

Yikes. Think my 15 year old cheap pocket fuji takes better pics, nevermind my p30 Pro which takes fantastic pics imo. OK, in a more expensive category but my Sony a6500 with various lenses is amazing, tho obviously not budget or compact like this.

These sold pretty well (lol)

I use high res mode on my phone and its not bad really. So I imagine a phone that costs 4x as much must deliver some impressive results. I really want the Olympus 40-150 pro as that's apparently very sharp and a focal length range I often use. Probably more than an iPhone maybe but for some reason I prefer wasting money on cameras than phones :D

Red_Shift

Yeah it is hard and a never ending money pit lol ! I was a chronic pixel peeper …. Small pocket cameras…. 1” sensors…. APS-C ….. Full Frame … Then back down to Micro Four Thirds which I think is a good compromise. I have a 2020 iPad Pro which I’ve taken some lovely pictures with ( as long as you don’t pixel peep ) this gives me hope that the next iPhone may meet my standards as a walk about. Edit to say it will def be the price of a lens but I currently have a hand me down iPhone 6 and the 13 will probably be used mainly for things other than a phone lol !

Paul_93R

I can't help myself :D I suppose I do it to see if my technique was good. Most things look sharp on the phone. Don't know why but over processing just bugs me even if the result is a bright and colourful image. The iPhone does look good although it's probably the price of a nice lens.

Red_Shift

I learned many years ago not to pixel peep and I’m much happier in my photography for it :-)

Out in September supposedly.

in all these years though a camera lens has been a certain size. Maybe got a bit smaller/lighter but not much. You aren't suddenly going to shrink a quality lens to phone size. Cameras will leave phones in the dust before phones can do that to cameras due to having the glass, sensor and maybe in the future the ability to use computational photography and not relying on photoshop. Phones will always need to be a certain size.

SPLE22

That's if you compare like for like... Computer (1960s) Vs Computer (2021) - Fair comparisons. But SmartPHONE vs Camera is not.

980971

(and those people might as well steer clear of camera deals)

980971

But then you'll also have new tech in real cameras - a phone sensor / lens isn't as good as a camera, it's just that phones are good enough for what some people want.

h4music

Remember the "computer" the size of a room that had a few kilobytes of memory and the processing power of a Casio calculator? I understand optics that depend on sensor size, pixel size etc but newer tech will always find ways to tackle and improve on existing deaign....

The same ebay seller (cameracentreuk) currently has the champagne gold version of this camera on offer at £269 (refurbished) - and the PURCHASE15 code is still valid, making the actual price £228.65. I've just ordered. Heat added, as I only spotted the further reduction after reading this thread. edit: looks like it's sold out - just the new ones at £299 in stock

980971

They've made a few successful ones since then

Nealio

Er, yes. Different camera, same manufacturer.

980971

It's a different camera

Nealio

Yep - mine got repaired inside warranty and went again within the following year. Less than 2 years total light use then in the bin. Pathetic. Probably isn't a used XF1 in existence now that hasn't died of lens control error. Fuji - never again.

Was a good deal, now £399 however, hopefully they'll discount again.

Tobirama

Either nikon d3500 or canon 2000d, or stretch it to nikon d5600, but if the budget fix, I recommend d3500 or canon 2000d plus another prime lens, either 50mm, 35mm, or 24mm used one or depend on your liking later, should be within your budget.

feival

I totally admit that I had considered that! I think go for it. This site is helpful and all the alternatives are much much more expensive! https://cameradecision.com/review/Fujifilm-XF10

980971

The other thing is that it will probably sell on Ebay for around this much in a few months if you regret buying.

feival

Thanks. I'm thinking that actually, if the image is really good then I could always crop from time to time when required. My current camera is this one https://www.dcviews.com/_panasonic/tz65.htm
