You're just nit picking here... Have you experienced the a monitor above 60hz? The difference is absolutely perceivable by your brain. Going from my Home computer, to using my partners or work computer is massive, it feels like the mouse is moving in slow motion.

For pc gaming yes, many prefer frame rate over resolution. When you're playing fps games that rely on 'twitch' movement and reaction speed, a monitor allowing you above 60hz in game to take advantage of the frame rates of your hardware can feel like an advantage in game at times. I've encountered plenty of people who have turned down their resolution to hit a certain 'hz' on their monitor to coincide with what frames their rig is putting out. It's the reason people 'overclock' their monitors too, to get those extra hz.

It makes that much of a difference.Have you played 60fps then dropped down to 30fps? It's like watching a stop motion video.

How does this compare the the p75 i bought in 1995?

Useless graph because anyone with this spec system wouldn't be playing at …Useless graph because anyone with this spec system wouldn't be playing at 720p. Ryzen CPUs are more equal a sometimes pull ahead at quad hd and 4k.

At 1080p the gap closes but the hierarchy is still intact, and the intel quads still comfortably lead every Ryzen.

The higher the resolution the more you lean on the GPU, and so the gap minimises to near nothing. You aren't testing CPUs then, you are just doing a GPU test.

However the reason why you would use a CPU bound low resolution test is because it can be a very good indicator of how fast a given CPU can drive modern games and utilise the GPU resources available.

So when your next GPU upgrade in the near future is far more powerful the faster CPUs will likely drive it to better framerates even at higher resolution that you might play at. Less chance of a bottleneck with more GPU performance.

Intel dominate in this regard for games. 6700k is still a very fast gaming CPU with no AMD equal.

Even if you compare the performance with an old i7 2nd generation, the performance is still not very far off - consider it's an very old cpu. The 6th and 7th generation barely have any improvement.

While this has been true for years and it does suck for consumers, from a business perspective you absolutely can't blame them. For nearly a decade they have had absolutely no competition with the higher end chips.

Then Ryzen came out and all of a sudden the jump from the 7700K to the 8700K is the biggest performance jump seen between intel generations in a long time. It's great that AMD are putting up a decent fight again.

Looking at it all from only a gaming perspective throws things off a bit. Games are notoriously bad at utilizing multiple cores well. In other CPU intensive applications the high core/ thread count CPU's leave this kind of CPU in the dust.

But given this is being sold as a gaming PC this CPU is still one of the best CPU's for gaming, where the speed and number of instructions per cycle each core can do is far more important to performance than the number of cores.

Edit: Not saying anyone here has been ripped off yet but those buying graphics cards on ebay be careful. There have been a lot of fake cards showing up on ebay. Old 560's,etc flashed with a fake BIOS to make them show up as newer cards.

I was so gutted, it really was an incredible deal - probably the best I've seen on here but I just couldn't deal with the screen quality. Regardless of the bleed issue, it looked washed out. I tried tweaking the screen settings but the lack of contrast meant there was only so much I could do to improve it. I do the odd bit of graphic design and 3D modelling so a good screen is important to me.

Add to that apparent DPC latencies (audio glitches what manipulating real time audio) it just wasn't any good for what I needed it for - I use Traktor and Sound Forge for DJing and processing audio.

Ram is upgradeable? How much does another 8gb go for?

Your soul
@weasel_wars you can try and build a pc search it up on youtube or something.
Or just get a games console
It depends, you aren't going to be able to play Battlefield 1, PUBG, Mass Effect Andromeda and stuff like that. They are even slow on low end current gen gaming laptops. You might find a second hand or refurbed Sandy or Ivy Bridge gaming laptop in that price range, which would probably be about as good as you could get in terms of GPU power for the price you mention. Though personally I would be tempted to go for a refurbed Haswell or Broadwell machine with integrated GFX. You would be limited to the less graphically demanding games (though Fortnite, GTA V, Civ 6 and plenty of Steam fare would work on lower settings) and it would actually be a functional work laptop with less than awful battery life.

We recently got a bunch of refurbed Lenovo X1 Carbons (3rd gen with i7 Broadwell) for £230 a piece at work. I didn't order them and we may have gotten a bulk discount, but there are probably similar to be had on eBay for not that much more. Haswell would be a bit slower and with worse battery life, but cheaper still.

Anyone recommend a good 1060 or 1070 laptop?
This would do nicely for anyone wanting management games and some old classic. It would also play new games but you would have to tone down the settings 1080p medium.
These msi laptops are really nice. I bought the pl62 for £598 before Christmas and fitted my own M.2 drive.

Theyre not too hard to get apart and you don't void the warranty doing so.

The screens on these are better than the IPS screen in my HP laptop.

But you're right, in past I had many deals not granted on here because of poor reputation (inc. now very popular eglobalcentral) I also had 2 accounts banned and never reallowed because of self promotion despite I'm just normal ambulance driver and have nothing to do with bussiness. I love those sites, my keyword feed is pretty much only comprised of them - you know what you are letting yourself in for and it's just common sense that you'll have to compromise somewhere (delivery speed, returns/customer service) if you ship things over from China, but for me the savings are well worth it... The performance and/or build quality are far superior to similarly priced items from UK retailers.

I'd be a bit more careful about a £660 laptop (do more research about the reliability of that particular model), but would probably still go for it if I needed/wanted a laptop. As long as they are delivered intact and you look after them, there shouldn't be any problems, and you can find simple YouTube tutorials for nearly any type of repair you'd need to perform anyway. I'm not really bothered about a lack of extensive aftercare/warranty.

It's a risk/reward thing which the individual needs to come to their own conclusion on. If people don't bother to clue themselves up on the risks, or the companies they are handing money over to... Then more fool them. I like using those sites and find the posts on here about them very helpful.

HUKD taking commission and planting of incentivised comments is wrong though, I agree on that... That NordVPN "deal" that was pinned to the front page for 3 weeks being a blatant example of it.

I have this laptop and I got it for £1100 during the summer and I absolutely LOVE it. Dont get put off by the Medion branding. It's a rebranded Clevo P670RS-G. GTX1070, i7 6700HQ (would have liked 7th gen but oh well) and 32GB of RAM with a 256GB SSD + 1TB HDD allows everything to load fast and run really well. It stays cool but people do complain once the fans ramp up. I configured mine to run slightly slower on battery power to save power and to make the fans run slower so people in public don't complain. Like this, I can play Skyrim for 2 hours on a single charge! The screen is bright with G-Sync and mine ran at 75Hz which I overclocked to 100Hz. Everything is buttery smooth

The biggest downside to me is the battery life once you crack up the performance. Under max load, the battery will last about an hour (minimum) but other than that, can't complain since I mainly am plugged into the wall.

I honestly don't think you'll be disappointed! Compared to the other four laptops I've owned, this thing boots up incredibly quickly thanks to the M2 SSD. Although it wasn't all on my wish list, I really like the whitish blue, backlit keyboard and have it on all the time now. Gaming at 1080p just flies along! I did think long and hard about going for a 1060 GPU but I concluded that a 1050Ti would be 'good enough' and I think I was right. And the absolute best thing is that you're getting this brilliant machine at a bargain basement price!

PS - also remember you get a two year warranty with Medion which is not to be sniffed at!

I was wrong... The IPS screen is just lovely. I loaded up Assassin's Creed Origins for the first time yesterday and it looks absolutely gorgeous! TBH, the brightness thing isn't as big a deal as some folks like to make out. If I had the Asus on maximum brightness, it would make my eyes hurt, so I'd end up turning the brightness down as a matter of course. Likewise with colours, yes okay, the colours might not be 100% optically accurate versus a standardised colour chart but orange is still orange and yellow looks, well...yellow! I don't look at the X6603 and get any sense of colours looking 'washed out' or their being any 'tinge' to blue or green. One last thing. Some of the folks that recently managed to pick up the £570 mis-priced Dell Inspiron 15 commented on how disappointed they were with the screen (despite it being IPS). When I fired up the X6603 for the first time, I didn't instantly feel a sense of let down which is probably a good sign. First impressions count for a lot when it comes to visuals.Hope this helps...

Well said!

I bought my first laptop in 2007. It had a pathetically slow AMD chip with integrated graphics but it didn't stop me happily playing the original Far Cry on it! I bought a Medion laptop a couple of years later which had a dedicated Nvidia 220M GPU. I played SOOOO many games on that machine!

Bonus!
Although the box matches the advertised spec, the actual machine has an i5-7400 (Kabylake) not an i5-6400(Skylake).

While not a massive performance improvement, it's definitely welcome as the CPU is the weakest component.

I guess Acer refreshed their later production runs with whatever they could get hold of.

It also has 1x8GB 2133(Crucial CT8G4DFS8213.C8FDR), and 3 free ram slots, which is both good and bad; good for future upgradeability, but bad for current performance (only single channel)

This is an unbalanced machine - the price is £100 more than a similar …This is an unbalanced machine - the price is £100 more than a similar machine with a 1060 6gb card. I'd go for the £100 saving rather than this.It needs a better processor for this price. That £100 can either buy more memory or contribute towards a better processor

looking on 3D Mark search results - the i5-6400 with 1070 gives benchmark results between 2207 - 2499.
Compared to:
i5 7600k + 1060 - Highest bench is 2118
i5 8600k + 1060 - Highest Bench is 2289

Ok given that the rest of the specs are going to be varied so is not always a straight comparison, however if buying for Gaming, the increase from 1060 to 1070 is the BEST way to spend an extra £100. Plus to add more memory or an SSD etc is a lot cheaper in future than buying a 1070.

Different strokes for different folks though.

Still three of these left so decided it was worth adding a comment still. Mine arrived with free next day delivery using code FREE200. Delighted with the machine - really so happy with it. Added an SSD because I had one spare from an old Xbox One setup and that has made a big difference to boot speed etc. Gaming is better than expected - GTA V with settings at max 1080p resolution is holding 60FPS without any bother. Someone earlier on the thread said this had DDR3 - incorrect, it has a single 8gb 2133 DDR4 ram module with three empty slots for upgrade. Case is smart enough and seems to stay cool and quiet. Heat and recommended if this is the kind of mid price gaming machine you’re after.
