Tenda Nova MW5 & Superhub advice/tips

Posted 6th Apr 2020
Hi all
Seeing if anyone can help or give advice - got the Tenda Nova MW5 quad pack from ebuyer and set it up yesterday.

Have 100mb broadband from virgin.

The main Primary node MW5 is only giving around 50mbps compared to the superhub which did give 100mb when near the routers.

Additionally, devices seems to randomly connect to nodes and not really be connected to those that are closest.

Have tried the superhub both as modem mode and router mode (WiFi off) but no difference.

Any tips or advice on set up or to improve these things?

I got around the separate subnet issue by plugging my NAS into the ethernet port on one of the mesh units. Similarly, in another room, I have a 9 port switch attached to the mesh ethernet port. A 3rd Tenda unit is attached to my homeplug setup so everything has access to everything.

Well, that's it really - everything is using the mesh subnet either via wireless or ethernet. I've got a few PCs & smart TVs attached to the homeplug ring which in turn is attached to a Tenda unit. The PCs can all see each other & the NAS. The mesh is attached to router & in fact the router wifi is turned off. Google home, Amazon devicesm, Tablets, Phones etc all use the Tenda wifi

This was my second try with the novas. I had mw6 last year and returned due to issues. Then bought the mw5 this year thinking they must have sorted out the firmware as so many people say they are OK but they just doesn't get along with my virgin bb.

May just be some routers it doesn't get along with?

The tplink deco have been great. Since first setup I'm getting consistent speeds no dropouts all around the house. Only issue I have was losing connection with my chromecast whilst casting, but all other devices are rock solid.

Ive done a workaround with the chromecast so happy now.

If your still within your refund period I would defo reconsider your options!

I got my set last week and not been that impressed tbh. I heard good things about them but I've had a lot of disconnects and they sometimes slow to a crawl.

But my worst bugbear is that they create their own subnet, this is a real issue as my Freenas box is on a static IP on my old subnet and so any PCs on the new one cannot access it, not good!

I'm thinking that I may well be returning them in the next few days...

Interesting, have you got your NAS on DHCP? Surely though, if it picks up an address from the 'new' subnet, any PCs on the old subnet won't be able to see it still? (edited)

I had the same issues on my tenda MW3. I had 100mb virgin. Only ever got around 60/70 max. Plus really slow periods where I'd only get 10max. Couldn't put virgin hub in modem mode so has to switch WiFi off and just use the tenda in bridge mode. Switched to talktalk now and had the same issues so just use the ISP modem and get full speed. I have a smallish house so don't really need a large mesh setup

Hi, i bought the quad pack too and am having the same issue. I'm on virgin 200mb. Getting max 50-60mb on WiFi. 85mb from the LAN port. Have tried the same steps, router in modem mode, tenda in bridge, turn off WiFi on router. But no luck. I decided to keep them as not full speed WiFi is better then no WiFi in some parts of the house but surely there must be a fix. I'm reading on here and other forums people with the mw3s are getting their top speed on virgin WiFi 300mb! Really confused! have you found a fix?

Ah, shame. Im really hesitant to return as I can't find one that has the plug setup like the mw5s, perfect for hallways where I have two of my nodes. What else is there apart from the deco's?

The mw3's max out at 100mb so impossible to get higher speed than that. Think I got about 70mb tops but the sometimes dropped to 10/15mb. Currently boxed up ready to sell once the lockdown is lifted. (edited)

You can also buy extenders that you can add to the mesh: amazon.co.uk/Dec…h=1

I have no idea what I've done, but after turning features on and off and turning the devices on/off one by one I am getting a stable 150mb around the house which given is 50mb less than my connection speed but defo happier with! Let's hope its a permanent fix! 🤞

Hi, did you manage to sort? Did you try putting it into bridge mode?

I didn't mate. I bought the deco m4 and getting my full 200mb all around the house no issues.

I tried Bridge mode, I tried modem mode on the superhub, I tried switching every single setting on/off . It gives a decent speed for an hour and then goes back to a quarter of the speed.

Trying to return the tenda, still in the process as I'm over my 30 days 😩

I have the same setup and it works brilliantly. Got 100mb from the main node and about 75mb from the others dotted around the house.

I switched the wifi signal from the virgin hub off so the tenda novas are the main source and i enabled the ‘fast roaming’ setting on the tenda app... has worked a dream since.
