VirginMedia Broadband and Netgear Router

Posted 13th May 2023
Hi all,
Spent most of the day yesterday to resolve this issue but to no avail!

So i have been with VirginMedia internet for years - Just the broadband service.
A few weeks ago i was upgraded to the 1 gig service and was sent the latest hub5 router.

Anyway, i have always used my own router with Virgin Media as i always feel they throttle there own router and you can no way get the max output. my own router delivered broadband speeds exactly or within 5% of what i was paying for so no issue thus far.

HOWEVER SINCE THE 1GB UPGRADE!

VM insists that i am getting 1 gig, The Sam knows test shows 1 gig incoming but when it hits the HUB5 it outputs just 550mbs max.

So the issue:
Im paying for 1 gig broadband but i am only getting around 550mbs.

Tried so far:
Just connecting to the hub5 with nothing attached to it, no switches-nothing.
Standing NEXT, 3ft, 5ft elsewhere in the same room to the hub5 my S20 or Apple Ipad achieves at max 550mbps (half what i am paying for).

My own Netgear RAX120 plugged into the hub5 and being used as an access point and im still getting at max 550mbps (in the past my own router has rescued me from VM crappy speeds/routers)

And i tried literally everything yesterday.
>Placed the VM Hub5 in modem mode.
>Reset the VM Hub5 router prob x10 yesterday

> and with the netgear router i have Disabled QOS (it wasnt enabled in the first place), placed in Access Point mode, changed all the cables all CAT 6 or 7, ensured DHCP was on, tried all the ethernet ports, used different devices, reset netgear router x12 yesterday etc etc
> prob tried everything on VM discussion forum prob page and iv had no luck whatsoever.

So im paying for 1 gig and getting at best half that speed.

Any tips on possible configuration i may have missed

Thanks

These are wireless devices. So you could be subject to WiFi interference or have devices that don't support the WiFi 6 Standard at the fastest speeds it can send wirelessly to you.

You need to be doing a wired speed test direct to the Hub 5 router. And bear in mind that while the Hub 5 has a 2.5Gb Ethernet port, your device (and your own router too, for that matter) may not. This will be a bottleneck and while Virgin may be sending 1100+Mb down the line, you may only be able to get maybe 900 or so as a result.

And finally, not every site and server you connect to will be capable of delivering you a gigabit connection. These speeds aren't necessarily to speed you up, but to share amongst multiple users of your connection at the same time to not be slowed down.

VM forgot to flick the switch and having a cuppa tea !

Call and bother them, every which way you can, incl social media.

Can you show the Sam Knows result from a wired device. (edited)

    Hi,

Thanks for all the replies thus far.

Wired device directly into hub5 is showing 550mbps also.

So iv tested wired and wireless, used many different routers, cables and settings and nothing has improved

Can you use the Hub 5 in Router mode with a single wired device connected and screenshot the Sam Knows result please. (edited)

currently im away from home this weekend. so cant do a test at more and upload result.

As per previous experience, I was expecting a shortfall with the Virgin Hub. I thought like before my Asus and Netgear stuff would compensate for it - at least get me to 10% of a 1gig speed.

So wired, wireless, Cat 6+ Cat 7 cables, Ipad Pro and Samsung S22 ultra, in same room ft away, or further away. Tried each and every scenario and all i got was a 550mbps.

    Cat 5e is plenty fine - Cat6+ & Cat7 cables aren't standardised....
See my post below - you'll not get your device to report the full gigabit speed if you use a gigabit wired connection - that's why the hub has a 2.5Gbps port. You need to connect that to another 2.5Gbps port on your client device to see the full gigabit throughput, which in theory will max out around 928Mbps, although VM usually give you slightly higher. You aren't getting close to that so obviously there is still an issue, I doubt it's a configuration on your side. Show them the Sam Knows report. (edited)

Yeah - yeah 2 points, you'll need to use Sam Knows to calculate speeds and the 4th port on the hub is rated for 2,5Gbps, the other ports only output 1Gbps...
