Unless you have an AGM or other expensive battery and you know it's on its way out it's probably false economy.
Normal batteries aren't that expensive and they're regularly on offer.
I once broke down with a faulty alternator on the way to London.
The AA gave me a new fully charged battery and sent me on my way instead of towing me.
It got me to London and back to Coventry before it went dead.
Had to phone a friend to come and give the battery a bit of charge with leads to get me home. Still better than the 2 leg tow that would've taken hours of waiting.
