Is that really a fair comparison though? They’re quite a bit different in price. I use 2 of these around the house connected to a central kodi library and it works really well. Inclusion of CEC so the tv remote controls it makes it very seamless. Only downside of the pi as a kodi box is its inability to output HD audio if you have remuxes.

I HATE this about mine. I have to get a blade to sort of pick at the surface of the card to pull it out of the slot. Could just stick a bit of tape on it as a tab I suppose, but it's still annoying. A little recess so I could pinch the end of the card is all it would take.

Gormond

It would be good if they re-routed/covered the ports the same way the RetroFlag cases do. The little MegaPi case is great because of that: it routes the power, audio, HDMI and ethernet to the back, 2 USB to the front and covers the other 2 USB and SD in hatches at the side - Even includes a safe shutdown and reset.

Rhythmeister

Merkins and their aluminum upto no good!

steven5watson

Basically they're knocking the p&p off. I do love a good deal but it smacks a bit when they slap on p&p. I know it's not free to send stuff but it still hurts my wallet.

After a long time spent fiddling with a cheapie Beelink android box and encoutering lots of Kodi playback issues, I checked out the Kodi community recommendations https://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=252916 Best 1080p/4K Bang for the Buck - Kodi only, HD Audio (bitstreaming) device It seems that the Minix U1 is fine with LibreELEC for SDR 4k playback. The Nvidia Shield is fast and very good, but over three times the price of the U1,

jedisteel

Nvidia Shield is the way to go trust me had untold android boxes of the years decided to get a shield Christmas I can see why it's been king for the last set of years top gaming regular updates and has the full licence for the streaming apps like Netflix and Prime Video a very powerful unit

amoulden

Great Android box. Was once considered to be the best box after the Nvidia Shield

amazoncrazy

thanks will look at them also.i have a crusty old box run by mouse.its so slow i have all my kodi etc on my amazon firestick.they are all pretty pants tho. :)

gottahavethat1

I have had this said box for 3-4 years. Easy interface and very user friendly. Was researching today what box to replace it with. This Minix box was excellent in its day and don't get me wrong it can still do a pretty good job but chipset and RAM are a bit limited for today's 4k and multitasking. I find it quite laggy these days, it use to fly. As a replacement, I'm looking at the X99. It's between £80-100 but you get a hexacore box with the latest chipset, 4Gb of RAM and 64Gb ROM or the H96 for £60 with 4Gb RAM and 32Gb ROM.

Ended up ordering as per your original recommendation T95Q... With an air mouse 52 pounds will in!

mchu6am4

Thanks... I just want something that's pretty much plug and play as I don't much time to read tutorials and tinker with unlike in my past life when I had plenty of time and also enjoyed food sort of stuff!.... How time change with kids!

The Mecool KM9 is not a bad box it uses the Android OS supposedly a few people, me included found it's not true Android TV OS but a skin on alot of their boxes had a couple of their boxes in the past but this box will not have any Nav bars cause of the Android TV OS if you want a box with nav bars I would go for the Beelink GT1 Ultimate or any of the H96 series used them both they have nav bars and more than powerful enough for your streaming needs hope that helps

mchu6am4

Thank you for the recommendation I've read some reviews, seems like a decent box although there is some mention of it lacking the top and bottom bars... Anyway what is your opinion of MECOOL KM9 ATV box? Note: I've never had any android box before so a little bit nervous of picking the right box and I'm only really interested in streaming services for live and recorded videos (i.e. No gaming).

jedisteel

Go for the T95Q good all round box lots of storage and memory I've used the box myself

Just because it says Android doesn't mean it's the best for tv. M8s pro L / w voice edition are officially Google supported tv boxes with the best for tv Android.

_uzi_

I was considering a M8S Pro L as it's one of the few affordable devices with Widevine L1 support - but then saw it lacks gigabit ethernet.. Are there any decent Kodi/Android TV boxes with Widevine L1 AND gigabit ethernet?

sky8000

Both boxes are similar in terms of specs. I don't know what you mean by "true Google Android", both have Android 7.1.1. I still prefer the Beelink Ultimate which support MicroSD cards up to 64GB (twice the storage when compared to m8s pro), it has less problems with overheating and, in my opinion, the overall design of the box and remote are better.

m0dm0use

Would a mecool m8s pro L with new mic remote and true Google Android same price be better?

Again, not sure if it's ever been done in court, but you can make an argument using peer networks that whilst your watching the steam, you are also uploading to other peers simultaneously, hence sharing pirated material. In the torrent days I used to turn off uploads to counter this.

Confused by this post, 18 alpha has been out a few months on xbox one. Also find it funny people think it originated as xbmc, when it has a much earlier history years before that.

Lol at the cable assumptions, pass the popcorn ? Can a more practical note, can anyone tell me if these boxes have TUN.KO module built in and any newer ROMs available with it built in for enablng VPN and what are they like to flash ? Is flashing fairly straighforward to manage, i.e are there any reset switches for enabling Maskrom/flash does anyone know? On my old 903 device you had to short pins 8 and 9, possible but fiddly. Looks like no built in SD, my old stick had a built in microSD which would be handy as I now have an unused 32Gb so might not be the one for me.

Foxeh

If I email you an image using poor quality cabling in my house. Will the image be poor quality when you receive it and open it? No. If the email arrives in your mailbox, the quality of the photo will remain in its original state. If my cables in my house are that bad, you simply won’t receive the email. This is how HDMI works, you’re not sending a stream of video down the cable, there are no varying qualities. HDMI is sending DATA down the cable, so if it arrives at your telly, it will be presented in its original state. If the cable is really bad, it simply won’t reach the TV at all.

ST30

any ideas why the audio is not working straight out of the box? what about firmware updates?

AndyRoyd

Nah, that alternative uses an inferior and generally less-supported chipset. If circa £30 is budget for must-buy-box-today consider £1.35 more for lightning deal ending circa midday Sat 13 Jan 2018 for similar chipset as OP running A7.1 https://www.amazon.co.uk/Smart-Android-16GB-Ultra-H-265/dp/B076797P7X/

IAmTheDude

Not a fan of RockChips, the never seem to have as much support as Amlogic's. I think they were one of the offenders in the OpenSource issues a while back so I always stick to AM. This might have changed but fool me once... I've noticed some quirks lately with LibreElec, mainly little bugs that have a bigger impact on my setup. Biggest one at moment is I have a central sources.xml with path sub in Kodi. LE either ignores it or wipes it. Infuriating, so moving back to the Android version on a couple of boxes for testing. Plan for me is to have a central IPTV and DVR server with a Myth or TVHE to push everything to these little boxes as clients so have been buying the odd one here and there to play around with. Pi3 just wont cut it for me anymore so need something with a little more grunt!

You will get Netflix in 480p/SD on any box which does not have the Widevine v1 DRM certification as well as HDCP 1.x. The Nividia shield definitely meets these requirements. and further runs Android TV OS compared to this box which has a customised Android 7.1 skin. The Nvidia shield is also 3 x priced, so horses for courses I guess. If you want to run Netflix in HD an equivalent option would be the Mecool M8S Pro L (note the 'L' at the end) which does have Widevine L1 and HDCP1.x; one of the very few Chinese boxes to meet Netflix HD requirements.

Rockchip aren't junk, the problem is that they don't release sources which makes them a poor choice for people wanting to use linux. That is supposed to change, though, and some of the RK series are going to be supported in mainline linux kernel - which is good news for everyone. also, on LE forums chewitt (LE dev) says: "We have been working with Rockhip Linux developers for a while now and there is a roadmap towards future support for RK3328 devices. Based on the simple fact that this work is based upon recent mainline kernels and proper standards (not just the hacked-up junk kernels Amlogic has shipped in the past) RK images look quite promising." Which is definitely good news - AML has been the best choice upto now, but it's not been without problems and plenty of kludges to work around both in linux/LE and in android. RK3328 is a pretty nice chipset, held back by software/lack of sources. I'd still recommend s905[d|h|x|w|z] over it for now, but it's far from junk.

hcc27

Thanks. Have you come across a review of the new Mecool M8s Pro L (note 'L' suffix). Geebsie you are in luck! I've spent all this time going through Paypal and Tomtop trying to get it resolved. In the end I escalated the case with PayPal and they said if I returned it they would refund me. I have been unable to find any courier to return it to China except one and they wanted £95! So today I was working out what to do. I did some more searches and it turns out: The power adapter they send with it is really poor quality and the capacitor blows so not enough power gets to the unit. The comments I read said use a 5v supply with the middle pin being positive of at least 1amp. I had one of those adjustable power supplies with different attachments and I set that up and plugged it in this afternoon. Hey presto! Bright light and it fired straight up! So basically it's the cheap shoddy power supply at fault. Hope this helps you and others. :-) this is where I found useful commments under this video

Hadn't used mine for a couple of weeks and tried to switch it on today to be met with the flashing blue light with no other functionality at all. Did you resolve this?

Has anyone else had this problem? Have only had it a couple of weeks and now it won't fire up. Put the power lead in and it flashes blue, then red, then blue and then goes off. Can't get it to fire up at all

Oh right. Thought we'd missed something easy. Not to worry will leave it then but thanks :-)

No bluetooth?

works just like any other good box. negatives, no Bluetooth, weak WiFi, no optical out. Bluetooth not a big deal unless you want gaming with Bluetooth remote. weak WiFi - I always use ethernet, if far away I use homeplugs, much more stable. Optical out, audio can be output through hdmi, and is what most people do. positives - cheap, android 7, widevine, hdcp, good support on freaktab.com.

If that is the case it would seem to make the Mecool M8S Pro the front runner. How does it perform in other respects though?

danfr

that box has widevine level 1 and hdcp... so it can play 1080p. the m8s pro plus is the only budget box with widevine level 1 and hdcp, that why it plays 1080p netflix through the ATV netflix app.
