Lol at the cable assumptions, pass the popcorn ?

Can a more practical note, can anyone tell me if these boxes have TUN.KO module built in and any newer ROMs available with it built in for enablng VPN and what are they like to flash ?
Is flashing fairly straighforward to manage, i.e are there any reset switches for enabling Maskrom/flash does anyone know?
On my old 903 device you had to short pins 8 and 9, possible but fiddly.

Looks like no built in SD, my old stick had a built in microSD which would be handy as I now have an unused 32Gb so might not be the one for me.
If I email you an image using poor quality cabling in my house. Will the image be poor quality when you receive it and open it? No.

If the email arrives in your mailbox, the quality of the photo will remain in its original state.

If my cables in my house are that bad, you simply won’t receive the email.

This is how HDMI works, you’re not sending a stream of video down the cable, there are no varying qualities.

HDMI is sending DATA down the cable, so if it arrives at your telly, it will be presented in its original state. If the cable is really bad, it simply won’t reach the TV at all.
any ideas why the audio is not working straight out of the box? what about firmware updates?

I contemplated these against NordVPN @ £2.09/ m (black friday deal but still available via direct link). I went with NordVPN purely because they had a free 3 day trial and it produced good results. I do have to switch it off occasionally, especially on here or any other referral based site. Anybody have experience with both on a Rural 20/1.2meg connection

Title is for 4 years, so price needs to be £120. Very annoying - thought it was 4 years for £66 (understandable considering that it what has been posted)! Not voted or spammed.
You can just top up your existing CG account and it works fine.

Not particularly great.
Need 2gb and 16gb I would say in this day and age. Spend an extra £10 or so as it's worth it. Will struggle otherwise even for light use
If you just want to view movies stored on an attached hard drive this will be fine, and easy to use for a non techy. If you want to go down the illegal stream route, it probably wouldn't suit.
Good gift for non-techy parents (or yourselves!) for Christmas etc.
I can't think of a single reason for giving this to someone who doesn't understand / like "techy" things. Unless you're trying to get your own back on them for buying you a knitting machine last christmas

Oh, and if you're thinking of using the free shipping, you'd be lucky if it arrives before christmas, now.

Not a fan of RockChips, the never seem to have as much support as Amlogic's. I think they were one of the offenders in the OpenSource issues a while back so I always stick to AM. This might have changed but fool me once...

I've noticed some quirks lately with LibreElec, mainly little bugs that have a bigger impact on my setup. Biggest one at moment is I have a central sources.xml with path sub in Kodi. LE either ignores it or wipes it. Infuriating, so moving back to the Android version on a couple of boxes for testing.

Plan for me is to have a central IPTV and DVR server with a Myth or TVHE to push everything to these little boxes as clients so have been buying the odd one here and there to play around with. Pi3 just wont cut it for me anymore so need something with a little more grunt!

BT Ive always found a pita so stick to 2.4ghz for remotes etc I would take a look at the S905/S912 and sub-sections over on FreakTab and LibreElec forums, look for a box that has good support then Google and YouTube some reviews of it.Decide what you want from it first before doing any of this, the Kodi hardware guide is a good read and will give you a lot of ideas. Then theres your technical ability, I have a lot of friends who cant understand the rooting/flashing side of things and even following tutorials cant get drivers installed to access their boxes or can figure out what they have to do to get LibreElec booting etc. Some of these boxes wont have reset button and will need a nudge elsewhere to get them into the bootloader, some just wont work at all.It took me two weeks of this before I got mine and have a fair few years of working with Android, still a pita with these sort of things If you want something simple, plug and play AndroidTV to use Kodi and Netflix etc then the MiBox is a good choice (albeit no root etc and a little bit more expensive). If you want the custom ROM capability then it pays to research into these boxes and look for a good brand, theres plenty of fakes and clone of clones around!I cant bring myself to say use one of these boxes as they come, they work so much better when you strip all the crap out. I've know plenty of people to use these as they come and just run into issue after issue after issue. With these boxes, you get what you pay for, they are usually cheap for a reason.

Damn you! I've been on FreakTab before I own a Pipo M9 Pro had it for 4 or so years and it's still going strong on KitKat best 180 quid I spent!

Rockchip aren't junk, the problem is that they don't release sources which makes them a poor choice for people wanting to use linux. That is supposed to change, though, and some of the RK series are going to be supported in mainline linux kernel - which is good news for everyone.

also, on LE forums chewitt (LE dev) says:
"We have been working with Rockhip Linux developers for a while now and there is a roadmap towards future support for RK3328 devices. Based on the simple fact that this work is based upon recent mainline kernels and proper standards (not just the hacked-up junk kernels Amlogic has shipped in the past) RK images look quite promising."

Which is definitely good news - AML has been the best choice upto now, but it's not been without problems and plenty of kludges to work around both in linux/LE and in android.

RK3328 is a pretty nice chipset, held back by software/lack of sources. I'd still recommend s905[d|h|x|w|z] over it for now, but it's far from junk.

Geebsie you are in luck! I've spent all this time going through Paypal and Tomtop trying to get it resolved. In the end I escalated the case with PayPal and they said if I returned it they would refund me. I have been unable to find any courier to return it to China except one and they wanted £95! So today I was working out what to do. I did some more searches and it turns out: The power adapter they send with it is really poor quality and the capacitor blows so not enough power gets to the unit. The comments I read said use a 5v supply with the middle pin being positive of at least 1amp. I had one of those adjustable power supplies with different attachments and I set that up and plugged it in this afternoon. Hey presto! Bright light and it fired straight up! So basically it's the cheap shoddy power supply at fault. Hope this helps you and others. :-)

The box simply has no ventilation holes whatsoever and a practically non existent heatsink on the CPU. Once sorted and running android 7.1.1 your good to go. There are currently 4 popular firmware updates for this box the newest being dated 19-06-2017. The referenced OTG cable when used with the FSs standard PSU should be OK to simultaneously power USB keyboard / mice / LAN adapters which can all be regarded as low power consumption. If using with a portable disk drive (mechanical or SSD) it would be wise to introduce an external PSU for the accessories.

Yes I received mine. Video through hdmi to my TV isn't as good as when I connect laptop to TV to play same content. Not sure if that's something I can change settings off but all attempts so far have failed me. That said it's just a tiny tiny bit jerky. Noise of the fan is very annoying and it seems to kick off the moment I do anything, like playing a YouTube video. Ordering wasn't an enjoyable experience - lots of miscommunication.

I know that many of the products go through a quick test before shipping but never to the point where I have noticed any use.

Customs do also often open a package to validate against the declared value, so they may not treat the contents as delicately.

Vorke also have a contact option for support, although first point of contact should be the supplier.

Geekbuying also have a thread regarding order problems here, which is likely to get a better quality of response than the normal CS routes.

My understanding is that Libreelec is still only at the experimental stage for the S912 due to the lack of mali drivers.

This would seem to be the best place to ask though.

this box is really good if you install the xannytech ROM (from freaktab or XDA) on it, and replace it with the wetek classic launcher from the aptoide store.

although to install the latest version of the rom you need a male to male usb and amlogic burning tool install on a PC. but it is worth it!

these are cheaper on gearbest, and take about a week to get here.

Someone had a MiniMXIII on ebay last night, honestly thought it would go for a few quid. It's at £30 at the moment. Not bad as I paid £25 for mine nearly a year ago so maybe some have decent resale value.

I don't think it's just the recent S912's, I suspect it's been the case for a few years. Of course there are some manufacturers who innovate, but that comes at a price which I suspect the majority of the market wont pay - especially when there are a multitude of cheaper alternatives that appear to do the same job.

You mention Beelink - they're not cheap yet the thirty odd quid box I bought a few weeks ago has dual band WiFi and works perfectly on both 2.4 & 5GHz. In fact, overall its as good as I would expect in that price range - interestingly its now £46, jumped up by a tenner!

The main noticeable difference has been in the Android version used.

Yeah, I remember reading a few of the recent S912 boxes were all clones of one another.

My brother has the Beelink Mini MXIII II which has decent dual-band Wi-Fi from all the reviews I'd read at the time - he's been moaning saying it drops out a lot and it also asks him to input the WEP key regularly which must be a PITA.

I could blame his router but that sounds more like a hardware bug. My Mini MXIII has been fine, no issues.

Ok - got my OpenWRT setup with PXE boot to an Ubuntu live CD, and manually installed LibreElec on the device, which it runs like a champ. So if you can handle the fun and games of setting up PXE it's an ideal device for a media centre
thanks for that - Got ubuntu booting of PXE, then used that to install LibreELEC and it's running like a champ (actually enjoyed setting all of this up, wierd eh!)

If you do a PXE boot make sure you have a timeout on the OS selection if using a boot menu. I noticed the Keyboard is locked out when it starts a PXE boot but once the OS/Installer starts loading the keyboard works fine.

It was a gift for my brother. The location came up via the ebay tracking link, all mentioned in a few posts

dickybow should really have clarified his comment on Post #44 as he stated it was a fake tracking number (mine definitely wasn't as it showed on the Yodel website) - yet it turned out he got his Beelink box a day later!

I have the 2GB/16GB version of this Beelink.

Everything is working great but I was intending to use it for emulation for older arcade games.

I've tried Mame4Droid (both versions - red and blue) and Mame4All. With any of those, the games will not launch at all even although they are listed - tried Happy Chick, games launch fine...

Anybody else on here doing emulation on their Beelink by any chance?

Can someone who has one of these (or any Android TV box really) please answer a quick question for me. I 'd like to VPN to my home server on one of these devices. Is the VPN a simple to configure, just the same as my Android phone. On my phone I go to settings, Network, VPN, Add VPN then enter URL/Username/Password.

I currently have a Raspberry Pi3 running OpenELEC, but to configure a simple VPN is neigh on impossible.

Thank you in advance.....

Point I was trying to make was the 3 has several different chassis's, some look exactly alike.

The 3:

Xiaomi MiBox 3
Model Name: MDZ-16-AA (Codename: 'JurassicPark')
Ships with Android 5.1.1 Lollipop

Xiaomi MiBox 3S
Model Name: MDZ-16-AB (Codename also 'JurassicPark')
Ships with official Android TV and supported by Google

Xiaomi MiBox 3 Pro (Enhanced)
Model: MDZ-18-AA (Codename I cant remember)
Ships with Android 5.1.1 Lollipop

Xiaomi MiBox 3s
Model: MDZ-19-AA (Code Name: Queenchristina)
Ships with Android Version: 6.0.1

When the latest 3s was released it was referred to as the '4k' as this is how it was marketed, 4k and official AndroidTV, forums and posts all referred to it as this.

When it was first released, people were trying to flash firmware for the MDZ-19-AA, some were bricked etc

Was just trying to make people aware of the confusion that can happen when you try and search for the 3 for firmware and root. Most of the correct pages will refer to the '4k' while solutions for the '3(s/p)' will pull up info for the Pro or Enhanced and be wrong.

On top of this it was also released at the same time in East and West. USA had bright colourful packaging with free vouchers advertised while the West was shipped in plain brown boxes (as is law).

Now, more confusion arose as sellers like AliExpress etc were just copy/pasting info for it then shipping out different models or 'East' packaging while displaying 'West' pictures on the site.

Some unconfirmed reports also stated that people had received the boxes for the '4k' but the model on the box was MDZ-19-AA.

So, your right, 'officially' its a 3s while 'technically' its a '4k'.
