Dell Optiplex 3000 SFF i5 12500 - PCIE gen3 or 4 nvme controller?

Posted 23rd May 2023
I've just bought the above PC from CEX and was thinking of upgrading the nvme hdd. At the moment it has a pcie gen3 Samsung hdd. I'm looking at getting a Kingston KC3000 which is gen4 but if the board only has a gen3 controller I would just get a cheaper gen3 hdd. Here are the full specs dell.com/en-…SOC
Thanks!

The manual @ dl.dell.com/con…-us (page 12) says the PCI-e bus is up to 4.0, so you can upgrade to the Kingston KC3000.

the manual for the Dell Optiplex 3000 Small Form Factor (SFF) says it can be supplied with both gen3 and gen4 drives. See storage section here

So you would assume any gen4 m.2 nvme ssd would be ok

Unless you're putting the machine to an unusual use where sequential transfer rates are paramount then it's not something that should be dictating your drive choice as it doesn't have much of an impact on other, more important, aspects of drive performance.
