    1. Easy to use for the whole family
    2. Camera
    = A good camera phone?

Pretty much the whole point of dedicated cameras these days is that they are difficult to use, and appeal to hobbyist photographers. You will get better pictures on automatic mode out of a pixel 7 pro, galaxy s23 ultra, or iPhone 14 pro, all of which are in your budget.

If you're spending that kind of money, find a dedicated photography site with a forum, do a bit of research, then ask on there. At least you won't get people recommending you use a phone!

You actually mean something that will fit in your pocket?

no, just compact and small for easy storage in like my wife's purse or my backpack.
We like the look and size of Fujifilm X100V however other than seeing it pop up in many reviewed websites, we are not very clued up just yet with the technicals for a camera...

How long till your holiday? If you're spending £1200 on a camera and aren't really sure how to use it (as you said you are very technical) you'll spend most of your holiday working it out, even if you can just stick it in auto

I think the closest camera for your requirements would be the Sony RX100mk7:

    cameralabs.com/son…ew/

It has a wide angle lens with a reasonable amount of telephoto zoom in a very compact body that can easily be carried about.

However I think you'll end up disappointed with it since although its sensor is a good bit larger than a phone sensor, it's still smaller than the bigger sensors used in mirrorless cameras like those linked above or the Fuji X100 series. That is the trade off to get a small compact size, the mirrorless cameras with a zoom are much larger (and sounds like too big for what you want) while the Fuji X100 has such a small lens because it has no zoom at all, it has a single focal length.

Phone cameras have become incredibly good at processing the images but dedicated cameras don't tend to do the same, while it is possible to get better image quality from a dedicated camera it takes a bit of processing work so I find people can be disappointed when they see images straight from even some pretty high end dedicated cameras.

I have the fujiX100V and it's great for travel. I have a canon 5D and that is waay to big for city travel so now default to the X100V for that purpose.

ooops, forgot to say, no zoom though, so you just have to compromise on that aspect. (edited)
