ASUS Laptop Charger - Green Gooo

Posted 22nd Jun 2023
Have an ASUS Laptop, it's been great over the years I've had it and it continues to do what I want.
Thing is, there is green goo/liquid coming out of the Laptop end of the charger/mains lead.
Contacted ASUS as it's an original ASUS charger/mains lead that came with the Laptop.
Their answer was, stop using, it could be dangerous - buy a new Laptop!!
To be fair, as it's clearly a manufacturing fault (I have many other mains adapters without this), I was expecting them to replace the mains adapter ...... nope! "Just renew your Laptop with a new ASUS"
What do you think?

    No thought required.
Product quality and durability obligations are the statutory responsibility of the merchant that sold the un-quality and un-durable tat.
You present your claim for replacement / repair / (pro-rata) refund to the shyster that sold you the rubbish, which may be Asus, maybe not.
You have up to 6 years after taking possession of the rubbish to present your claim to the merchant,
unless you live in a country with rubbish lesser consumer protection period, such as Scotland.

Thanks for that - it's a Chinese part, with ASUS on it, seems ASUS went cheap - and, in my opinion, should replace it.
I note this in your link, "The main instances of ‘greening’ cable arose during the 1960’s and 1970’s, although some instances are still seen today. Inferior grades of plasticiser were prone to greening even if the cables were not overheated"

Can't you just replace the charger

Of course I can, ASUS have supplied me with a faulty/dangerous part - surely they should replace it, what do you think?

Will cost you more money on a engineers report to prove it has an inherent fault than it would just to replace it.

I get where the OP is coming from here but it's only a charger that has failed after I assume multiple years of use. I would just replace it myself rather than waste time going down the route engineer reports and consumer rights. When I was lugging around a laptop daily, my last example some Dell Inspiron variant I used between 2006 and 2015 I went though five PA-16 official Dell chargers.

Its just one of those things.

    It's the principle
ASUS shouldn't be allowed to sell Laptops with dangerous chargers so that they save a few pennies

how old is this goo-spitting charger?

Few years - that shouldn't matter anyway if it's built correctly .... this thing was seen in the 60's and 70's - to have it happen in 2023 is a disgrace.
Seems that ASUS cut costs and obtained a dangerous charger from China to save a few pennies.
