MarketPlace purchase via PayPal

Posted 30th Jun 2023
I'm looking to but an item from FB Marketplace for around £200
The location was marked as Birmingham which is a bit of a drive but manageable, but they've said they recently moved to Scotland which is WAY too far for me to travel.

They said they would post it and payment could be made by PayPal via Goods and Services.

Would I be protected if it doesnt turn up or wrong item sent / not complete etc?

Ask them were it is in Scotland and say you have family, who would like to come and view, see what happens

Sounds like a scam to me though, and would pay a bit more or just hold out for something else to come up

    ^ this

9/10 the seller will not answer or suddenly the item is sold/defective etc

What about telling them to list it on eBay.

Definitely avoid. I've been trying to find a specific lego set for years when I found one on marketplace. Paid for the item and postage but they never sent it. Turns out they were a serial scam artist with multiple profiles. Luckily I got the money back but will never do it again as there's no guarantee of that happening. I think I only got it back because I was able to provide a lot of proof as I searched the mobile number they gave me on Google and found other people who fell for it too. They also seemed to "move quite often". What confused me though was they offered pick up and cash on collection, dread to think what would happen if you turned up with cash for it!

Private sales between individuals have no consumer protection regardless on the method of transfer of goods/cash. Ask them if they are prepared to send it, so you can view before you commit your cash and see what happens.

Paypal goods and services says you get a full refund if item gets lost or damaged. Seller pays a small fee, but what if the seller doesn't use a tracked delivery service?! Sounds too risky for me. They should have made sure that they changed their postal address on Facebook before they listed it. I have heard of scams where people say I no longer live at so and so place, can't remember how they do it though.

Zero protection if seller sends fully tracked garbage.

Thanks all - sounded really fishy but I haven’t done much with PayPal for years so wanted to double check.

I bought once from FB with postage for over £50 and I was scammed but once come back to PayPal they have refunded me money straight away. But pick "buying goods" because otherwise you might lose your money
