Heat for price, but add me to the list of commenters pointing out that rather than being the best of both worlds, this camera combines the bulk of a dslr with the image quality of a mid-range compact.

For less than this, you can pick up a second-hand Canon 100d off eBay which is smaller than most dslr cameras. You’d be missing the printer and the 45x zoom - depends on how important those things are to you. Personally I’d not miss them, but horses for courses etc

It's not awful but I bet most of them get left at home because they are too big to lug around and a camera which isn't with you won't take good pics! No viewfinder either - which would have helped justify its size.Think hard before splashing your cash: I'm all for encouraging people to take photography more seriously but this really isn't the right (type of) camera for most people. For just a little more money you can get something like a Panasonic TZ60 travel zoom which takes great pictures, has a big zoom and still fits in a pocket. Regularly drops below £200 as it's an older model.

Picked one of those up in the recent curry's misprice for £120.

Can confirm, great little camera.

You're spot on re the hassle of carrying around the bridge camera too, I bought the TZ60 as my DSLR was a pain to lug around for days out.

This won't be a great camera tbh. The lenses on these low end bridge cameras are pretty rubbish.

You'd be better off buying a similarly priced point and shoot with less zoom IMO. Beginner or not.

I expect it's not of much use for any serious photographers but everyone has got to start somewhere! I also think it would be useful perhaps for family pictures and the like. Most decent compacts are potentially only a bit cheaper with neither of the freebies!

Goes from a useful 24mm to over 1000mm. Sample pics in photography blog look good. Even CA isn't to bad

He'd just gorged himself on a kill so was sleeping it off. I have a load of shots, I'll share later. There's a nice comparison where the guide used an SLR (but with a cheaper lens) versus this.
This was a good price, although personally I would recommend spend more and get a compact that slips in your jeans pocket and it will give similar results with 1080p video....

Had a Sony hx10v for nearly 4 years, not really missed the zoom being only 16x on mine, but the pictures and especially the video is great, use it a lot for motorsport events.

just my 2 pence worth.
I'll say it again, no good having an all singin all dancin DSLR with mingy lens and pouring over settings and quality when you don't actually get the photo in the first place..
I have been in the same boat as RXP91 and got shots of animals from afar with superzoom bridge cams, of which I have missed out on with a DSLR in the past..
For safari and anywhere you need to zoom in close, unless you have £10G and want to cart a lens longer than your arm around with you, these superzoom bridge cameras are just great!
Anyone know of any similar bridge camera deals?

Camera snobs. This isn't the bridge I would choose but the vast majority … Camera snobs. This isn't the bridge I would choose but the vast majority of people that want decent cameras aren't ones that wish to have full bodied SLRs, pay the price for them or lug all the crap about you need to get varied shots.

I'm not a camera snob, im fully aware that a lot of people dont want an overcomplicated camera and just want something a bit better than their phone, and that's absolutely fine. I just don't like brands shoving point & shoot internals into arbitrarily large bodies just to make them look more pro to beginners without any tangible benefits beyond ergonomics. I literally ran into this problem last month when a member of family wanted to buy his girlfriend a camera to get better quality shots for her makeup business. He ended up dropping over £300 on a bridge which was solely differentiated from a £100 P&s by its 50x zoom, but he chose it because of the way it was marketed by Canon and because it looked like my old SLR. I'm not saying people should only buy expensive cameras, I'm saying people shouldn't buy what is essentially a bog standard compact with a jacked up price tag simply because it looks like your cousin Harry's cool DSLR.

IMO - Not really, and I think it's telling that you mention a "Travel … IMO - Not really, and I think it's telling that you mention a "Travel Compact" as a "Bridge Camera".The segment is dead and has been replaced by "Travel Compacts". There are no new models and heavy discounting.

Are you replying to the wrong person maybe? I haven't mentioned travel compacts.
I'm a massive Canon fan.....but this is not one of their better efforts

For a camera which is relatively new camera....first released only 8 months ago....the fact that it is being so heavily discounted should tell you a great deal....

It really is basically a compact with a long zoom lens (and a slow one at that....f3.5 - f6.6)

It lacks most of the SLR features that Bridge camera users should be expecting.....there is no option to add an external flash to boost the poor built in one's range.....the deal breaker will any bridge camera for me would have to be the lack of a viewfinder....making using in bright light difficult & the lcd screen on this one is not articulated & at 230dpi is very low resolution...

Not offering 1080p video on a 2016 model is also truly unforgivable

Crazylegs i agree overall with what you say, for those who are not into photography this might be ok for
their needs. For those who use cameras a lot and know about the different brands then it is limited in comparison to a semi pros camera. For most camera enthusiasts it would not be worth getting.

In my opinion, the best option is to get a gopro camera (helmet mounting), that records full HD video, you can take a still easily from the video, when you transfer it to computer.
Alternatively, you can get a DJI Phantom drone and then can record HD vids, take stills, control the drone and camera, even record yourself from bird's eye view. Later, with the help of softwares, you can edit and create a nice video of landscapes or your cycling action!
There are pretty cool videos on youtube, filmed by DJI Phantom. You could do more research and get what suits your requirements.

A similar amount spent on a good compact would suit far better. I'm convinced these bridge cameras must sell largely to people who think they're getting a 'bargain DSLR' because it's a similar shape!

To be fair bridge camera do tend to have superior optics to compacts (even ultrazoom compacts) and tend to offer a level of "SLR Style" creative control not offered by compacts

BUT that is where the similarities end ....... most people involved with photography will agree that cramming masses of pixels onto a small sensor simply means less light reaches each photoreceptor ..... the result being poor low light results & high noise even at low ISO.....in fact it has been shown that the some phone cameras perform better in low light than these bridge cameras

All this photos where taken from well over a 2km+ range.
These where taken with a 2012 Panasonic Lumix FZ200 12MP camera 24x zoom optical lens which i bought from Hong kong for £220 back then and was selling for £360 + back in blighty.

The first 2 photos i took from the 55 floor of the IFC (international finance building) building in CENTRAL, HK island, all these photos where taken WITHOUT a tripod so i could of zoomed in even closer if i had one .

A decent compact, not a bulky toy.

IF you had any real experience we mite just start taking your comments seriously,i have been using canon and Panasonic bridge cameras for more than 16 years and i can assure any one you wont get a better mutli-role camera ( NOT THIS ONE ) that's just as good at taking very long range photos and all the way down to macro shots all in one package.

There called bridge cameras for a reason chappy as that's exactly what they do as they fill the gap between and compact camera/ mobile phone & DSLR and if you ever owned one you would now what there capable of.

With a bridge camera you can shoot impossible photos that a compact & mobile phone cant do and they will save you a lot of leg work not having to get into range of the building/person/scene your shooting from medium to long range.
Unlike some im always capable of backing up my statements and don't make random comments on things that i don't have a clue about.
Here's a few photos i snapped while living in hong kong for 6 years just to show the one's who don't know what a bridge camera was designed for..

These 4 photos where taken back in 2008 with a canon Canon PowerShot S5 IS which was only a 8MP camera as well as a12x Optical zoom lens which is very low by today's standards .
