Best Affordable Second-Hand Suv?

Posted 21st Mar 2023
Hi all

I'm not the most knowledgeable person when it comes to cars, but I have been leasing cars last few years, but I no longer see that as an option. I would like to get a Suv now but with so many options available, I would love to read what people's thoughts are in what the best one is. I'm looking at either the VW Tiguan or a hybrid in Toyota CHR.

Suzuki Vitara is well worth looking at. £10k cheaper than a Toyota C-hr. It was the price that attracted me but it’s been bullet proof. We have 2 in our household. Feels a bit cheaper inside than say a Toyota but doesn’t bother me at all.

    Isn't Vitara a smaller car?

Peugeot 3008. I love my little tank. My dad has the Picasso and is also very pleased with it

If you are looking at a Tiguan look at a Skoda Karoq, one of the same car.

Annual mileage is 4k, yeah I don't drive much haha but budget wise, looking at 15-18k

SUV is a fairly style focused body style so a lot of the choice is going to come down to what you like.

Would this be buying new or second hand, and what is your budget? Note there is a waiting list for many new cars (shortage of parts).

I have been looking at an SUV for the last year (I am in no rush for a new car so just been looking).

There are loads of web sites giving suggestions for best SUVs, and also loads of YouTube videos.

The suggestion above about the Skoda Karoq is a good one (VW own Skoda and the engine and car "chassis / sub frame" are both VW, as are most of the parts in the car).

One of my neighbours recently got a Skoda Karoq and he test drove loads of other SUVs and settled on the Karoq.

The thing to note with SUVs is that there are small SUVs, medium SUVs, and large SUVs.

As an example Skoda offer one of each:

    Small SUV - Skoda Kamiq
    Medium SUV - Skoda Karoq
    Large SUV - Skoda Kodiaq

I have also been considering the Hyundai Tuscon or a Kia Sportage (both Korean and both I think offer 7 year warranty)

I have a Nissan Qashqai +2 and I hate it. First and second gear are rubbish. It has kept running though. 112’000 on the clock. Affordable though. (edited)

Genuinely thought about it but couldn't get myself to drive one.

Seat Alteca is another VW/Skoda family variation.

A lot of these SUV's are being sold with 1.0 litre engines which some may find a bit underpowered.

Slight typo, it is Ateca not Alteca

I have also been considering this (see my update above)
