Family Tree storage/research cheaper

Posted 25th Mar 2023
Hello, could anyone please help me with this......

I input my family tree research online. This was info collated many years ago from talking to family members and decided to go digital.

I initially used Ancestry as it had a special offer, however going forward this seems expensive given the limited amount of time I would use the site for research. I would need the top subscription as I have relations in Canada, Australia, Ireland, Scotland, England.

I also put details onto My heritage (exported across) which is amazing for producing reports. However, I have exceeded the amount of family tree members and it's asking me to upgrade.

I've started to do the odd update/research when I have spare time, which has only been a couple of times in the last year.

I am not sure what's the best way to deal with access to records for research and storage.
Can anyone recommend the best way please?

Sorry for the long read. Thank you for any input.

There are free family tree programs (free genealogy software) so that you can enter the data, or you could try "Mindmap" or Visio style programs to draw your own.
Data can be held on a spreadsheet, which could also make your tree as long as you assign a unique ID per person.
So your headings on one sheet could be.
ID, name, father, mother, brother, sister.
    1, barry smiff, 27, 32, 99, 6.
Another sheet holds other data relevent to the ID.
It would be a flat database, but it could work.
The Mormon Church offers a free database, and you can search for "free bmd"
Go through facebook and similar, because people are stupid enough to actually list their family members.
Use social media and lateral thinking. If you can't find a person, use your knowledge of their friends and family to search, as they might have intentionally used a different spelling or name.
I found 91 of 120 pupils of my class year who had no real contact with each other over 30 years, for a school reunion using fuzzy logic etc. This included folks now in America and Hong Kong.
Try 192 and other directories to help (edited)
