Engagement ring around £500

Posted 15th Jun 2023
I am looking to get good value for money for around £500. I would go refurbished if it still seemed new.

Any advice appreciated as I don't want to be ripped off. Platinum is nice but would do white gold just unsure on karat. I think she would like the twisted style. And of course the bigger and clearer the diamond the better. I would be happy to have lab grown

It's worth bearing in mind if you go for white gold it needs replating every couple of years, with something like an engagement ring which will be in daily use it might need doing more often.

I bought engagement and wedding ring in white gold and it's something I didn't consider before and probably would have just bought gold if I'd known at the time.

I've never known white gold need replating.

My ex only had white gold jewellery from chains, bracelets and rings all worn daily for years and fine.
That being said, platinum is probably the best choice for engagement and wedding rings.

For £500 you are getting a very small low clarity diamond.

You would have to go second hand or lab grown.

Jewellry Quarter is a good place to go if you live near Birmingham.

I have 2 solitaires, one white gold, one platinum, very good clarity. Need to get around to selling them! But these were over a grand back in early 2010s

If your worried about getting ripped off don’t buy from the high street, low quality diamonds high price tag.

I spent hours researching about diamonds, & the 2 best sites I found for price were purly diamonds & quality diamonds.

Can choose your diamond & see pictures & choose the setting.
The price of diamonds comes down to the 4cs but these websites are good for a comparison & may find you’ll get more for your money or better quality.

Just get her one of these, but make sure which flavour she prefers as it could be the deal breaker

With such budget, I would consider other stones rather than a diamond or it will be a lab grown one, oddly enough look on QVC for simulated stones, and you have return guarantee. Just don't go too big or will be too obvious that fake.

The diamond will be tiny on a budget of £500 I'm afraid especially if you want platinum. As said above, you will need to look for white gold and a simulated stone for something in that price range

For example, this has a small stone and is £1750!

Probably get a lot of hate for saying it but I found this on Etsy and although it's a 3ct moissanite and not a lab simulated diamond, it can be made in platinum for £581.40 made and shipped from Australia.

Is that the kind of style you're looking for?
Either way I'd always recommend Etsy since near enough everything is handmade and a lot of sellers are happy to customize and very accommodating. I've never had any problems.

Edit: I just clicked the link you posted on another comment and saw the type of ring you want, oops. (edited)

I would look at second hand pawn shops in your area see what there got, most can be nicely polished up,also there is a few trusty Facebook groups sellers gold etc at very good price than any second hand shop

ATTAGEMS Official Store on Aliexpress seems to be well-rated and sells Moissanite jewellery in 925 Silver (White Gold Plated), 10K, 14K, 18K Pure Gold. Though they're not as cheap as comparable sellers.

ebay US used to be excellent for estate jewellery when the £ / $ had great rates and there were no taxes at Checkout, but that was some years ago! (edited)
