Haggling with DFS?

Posted 23rd Dec 2020
Looking to get a couple of sofas from DFS and I wondered if the sales people have room for negotiation on the prices, or to offer things like free delivery/scotch guard etc.

Recently got something from oak furniture land and there was zero negotiation allowed!!

Scotch guard is a con, the material is treated before manufacture regardless of if you pay. Considering it's overpriced cheap tat you should be able to haggle on price.

I’ve had my existing cheap tat DFS sofa for 8 years, which I got second hand on eBay when it was 3 years old, I’d say that’s lasted pretty well.

At the end of the day they give you a 15 year guarantee on the frame and springs. Another local more expensive shop only gives you 8 years.

I agree DFS aren’t the best, but they’re more than adequate for most people.

I got free delivery, free gliders and free guardsman with my two 3 seaters.

But the gliders are an absolute joke. Every time I move my sofa, there are the 6 gliders detached from the sofa just sitting there are on the carpet.

It's that cheap rubbish you get from ebay. Very poor.

Surely they'd give you 10% off if buying the sofa's I'd just go elsewhere if they won't play ball.

I worked on the delivery side at DFS for about 10 years. The scotch guard is a great product but only if applied correctly. The warehouse staff never had enough time to treat it properly and most fabric suites only got a light going over. The leather cleaning kits are nothing much different to fairy liquid and are a waste of money. The extended guarantee isnt worth the extra money. The glides and wheels they offer can be bought online cheaper too. The sales staff won't haggle on prices but may offer a customer return at a discount price.

The spray treatment takes place either after unloading the sofas in the warehouses or just before they are loaded for delivery. They are not pre treated whether you pay or not!

DFS never and I mean never discount - not even free delivery so don't embarrass yourself.

As you have already found out, neither do Oak Furniture Land.

    Furniture Village do.

What’s cheap rubbish? The sofa or the gliders?

    Gliders.

Sofas weren't/aren't great either. They didn't (from day 1) live up to the fancy promises the sales manager made on the day we bought them.

    My experience with DFS
    Pre-sales = amazing.
    Post-sale + any problems = awful.

You could be right. I had a negative experience with DFS.

My sister bought from Harveys. Her experience was a 100 times worse than mine. The dispute became a long drawn out process spanning 1 year, after which they went into administration.

Parents bought from SCS. That went well but they didn't have any issues so can't comment on the aftercare.

Ex car salesman maybe? It feels the same whether you go to a car or furniture showroom.

Maybe I’ll stick to eBay again. I paid £150 for my DFS sofa all those years ago and can’t complain about it

I’ve compared DFS to a local furniture shop who are nearly twice the price and pride themselves on quality, but I hear so many issues about them as well

I’m happy with my dfs sofa, one tip is to keep an eye on the price up until delivery as if the price drops they will give you a credit note for the difference, with no expiry date.

I negotiated with dfs 4-5 years ago, did not buy from them but was offered a discount, got mine from scs in the end also with discount. I found that comparing similar products between companies and a couple of leaving the store but coming back to see the same person helps, I also mentioned things like quidco and topcashback if they are on there. Must admit it took around a week to get the deal I wanted. Products were also in the current sale they had

be wary of sale prices. family member bought a sofa set at a really good sale price. I kept an eye on the price online for a good year later (on and off) and they never knocked it down to that low price after purchase (so the right time to buy is when the price looks good- don't assume the sofa will get k picked down again.) Anyway, sofa kept 'tilting forwards' anytime someone sat on it. dfs called and engineer was sent out within days (3yrs after initial purchase). turned out the daft bats had screwd the sofa legs in at the wrong point- he repositioned them all and was very pleasant. problem solved and good customer service experienced.

As I’m sure are many others. It’s the same old you only hear bad reviews, hardly ever hear the good ones. At least I know not to expect any discount and maybe just get free delivery if I go ahead with the DFS one.

    Thanks all

You have to bring the matter up if there is a price drop as the credit isn’t automatically issued.

Been eyeing up a new sofa recently from DFS, popped in to the local to check it out and queried about extras if I was paying cash. Supposedly they don't do that any more...

Our last sofa from them the salesman threw in the fabric cover (that I kept forgetting to use!), glide feet things, and delivery. Maybe it's who you speak to, maybe they don't any more...

Due to sizing i think i am about to opt for a DFS sofa. I can see that you can order it online but do want another viewing of it in the show room. I may ask them to give me a reason to buy from them rather than online. Assume they are on commission.

Reading the comments it seems unlikely. Furniture Village today was pushing a particular sofa and said "im feeling generous today and can have 10% off" We werent that interested in that one.

Furniture Village often offer a discount, and just sitting on a sofa and walking away from it is usually enough to get the offer of a discount

DFS though - can't say I have ever received decent service from them, never mind a discount!

Is there a website like camelcamelcamel for me to check DFS price history? Thanks
