Best way to use a mobile in the usa

Posted 14th May 2022
good morning all, does anyone know the cheapest and easiest way to use a mobile from the UK in the USA. to be clear what I mean is, is it easier/cheaper to buy a SIM in the UK to use in America whether that's a contract or PAYG or try to get something when In America. I should be going to Florida in august and we have a car so need data to use maps and maybe text/phone the UK. though I would imagine using data for WhatsApp or messenger would be best for calls. thanks for any help I appreciate it

Get a 3 PAYG SIM as these include go roam without paying a daily charge - three.co.uk/pay…cks

When you insert the SIM, whatsapp may ask if you want to change numbers, so just click no, so whatsapp will still work with your existing number.

If you have a dual SIM phone, you can use both SIMS and then turn off data roaming on your main number so you can still receive normal texts.

Also you can download maps in google for offline use (edited)

Can you kindly provide the link which opens up in the browser as opposed to application as at present as I don't use the HUKD application. Thanks in advance.

Download the here app and download maps for Florida. Then use it in offline mode. It works on the screen if you get a car that’s got CarPlay or android auto.

florida is an awesome place but it’s got very expensive over the past couple of years. (edited)

Used three throughout the US with no issues of course it depends on where you are. In Florida we have had 4 and 3G but 3G totally different to here speeds very good even to the point where you could FaceTime in a car with perfect signal. I normally use the free data sim and add credit.

Have you tried contacting your current provider? I am with EE and when I went to USA I contacted them and they told me I was able to use my current package over there with no extra cost… worth a punt

Yeah if you're on EE they also offer a very reasonably price £10/month 'roam further' add on that allows your UK calls and data to be used in about 50 countries including the USA, you can just add it for 1 month at a time so pretty cheap for a 2 week trip to the states. Assuming you're an EE customer of course.
