Hearing aids - what a rip off?

Posted 26th Apr 2023
My wife now needs a hearing aid sadly. She has been trying an NHS one. It isn't very good. A visit to a private hearing specialist has come up with 'deals' for 4 to 6000 quid.

Incredible prices in this age of technology and competition.

I am at the start of my research into getting a good pair at a fair price and would appreciate any input.

Thanks

I use nhs hearing aids and find them to be very good with nice clear sound, i guess it depends on your hearing and the model they provide, mine are 2 grand to buy private but got them free and they are rechargeable and i can alter the sound and volume via an app, they're also Bluetooth and can be used as ear phone and take phone calls
Maybe try speaking with the audiologist about the issues shes having (edited)

My dad got his NHS ones from Specsavers and they were the over the ear type and were shocking.

He then paid £995 for a pair of of Advance ones and they are in-ear invisible ones and they are truely amazing.

He also got a card included for 5 years of batteries free too so every few months we go into the store and pick up a box of batteries. They generally last about 6 days each.

    Details of range here

Highly recommend going in and seeing them. (edited)

Same. Recharge overnight and no worries about fiddling around with batteries. There was a range of three offered. Just over £3,000 for the middle range one - Bluetooth etc not required. Excellent service plus Advantage points!

I read an article some months ago (I'll look for it) about people using airpods as hearing aids and getting very good results.

This wasn't it but is interesting. (edited)

    UPDATE FOR THOSE INTERESTED

My other half originally got sent to Specsavers who handle ear tests and NHS hearing aids.
She was fitted with a unit. Giving some instructions. (very few)
She found it useless. I spoke to somebody who had a Specsavers aid and they said their one was good. It had an app which you could change settings dependent on surroundings, etc. They were very happy.

My other half then checked and she had the same unit but had been given no instructions, etc. Never even told it had an App. Just 100 per cent sh*t service. All they want to do is sell you a £3000 hearing aid.

She complained and went back to another Specsavers and was told how to use the hearing aid, all it's features, etc. She is now really pleased. Chalk and cheese. She regularly has the App out to tune it to the location and is happy. The model is a SIgnia.

She is also learning more about what she needs and should she upgrade has a better idea of everything.

The Government all be shot for letting these hearing aid sellers bleed people dry. And investaigate the pure lies and BS these sellers come up with. My heart bleeds for people that have been conned out of hard earned money.

Seriously though the technology in a hearing aid is mature and non-patient specific, can you not get them on Ali-Express for like £12 including postage?

It's basically processing sound from a source (environment) to a sink (eardrum) with a gain control. Or at most, equilisation in-between?

When she says the NHS one isn't very good, does she have anything more specific to share about why? Is it comfort/sound level/something else? It may be something the NHS can sort for her. There are several different types of hearing aids and if the one she has isn't suitable for any reason they could potentially try a different one or change the settings on her existing one to try and resolve any issues without you having to buy them privately. I use NHS hearing aids and my local trust are great at sorting out any issues.

    Thanks.
They are uncomfortable even after a few refittings.
And she just cannot get the sound right. Too loud or too quiet.
having said that they have now completely stopped working..

My good lady has had a pair of rechargeable battery hearing aids for about a year or so now. Over £2K I believe. They also have bluetooth functionality so she has them paired with her ipad and watches all the programs whenever she pleases. As long as I have the telly lowish it meansI can watch what I want and she can do likewise.
When it comes to things like your eyesight and your hearing you just gotta pay what you gotta pay - no scrimping. Specsavers seem to be a very ethical company.

I categorically have no intention of scrimping where my better half's health is concerned but at the same time I fully intend researching the market before paying out thousands. Price variations seem crazy and it's hard to know what is going on at first look.

Just got Phonak over ear hearing aids NHS from Specsavers and they seem fine. Although they are over ear the wire in ear is very small and body of aid fairly small so not too visible. Managed to get rid of subtitles anyway

I'm with OP here. When you look at the audio tech you can buy for a couple of grand, these hearing aids just look vastly overpriced. Would be very interested in finding out where you end up with your search.

I firmly believe we are getting well and truly ripped off. Customers being blinded by sales patter.
Primarily the victims are older people under stress getting ripped off.

FWIW A good friend of mine has hearing aids and he is also a senior nurse. He found that unless you spent the upper end of the prices, the improvement on the NHS offering was that great.

It may not be practical in every day life, but I think you're spot on about the technology: 'AirPods Pro, may work just as well as traditional hearing aids to improve speech intelligibility among people with mild to moderate hearing loss.'

Has anyone bought hearing aids from Aliexpress? I just wondered if they were worth investing in a spare pair of hearing aids for my mum? If they would be an improvement on teh NHS ones?
