The Raspberry Pi 4 is the most powerful and feature-rich Raspberry Pi to be released, an incredible improvement on previous boards.

New Features!
The latest model of our favourite single-board computer includes great new headline features such as dual 4K (yes 4K!) displays, super-fast USB 3.0, Gigabit Ethernet and budget-accommodating RAM options.

Even More Power!
In terms of computing power, the Raspberry Pi 4 ships with a new 1.5GHz Quad-core CPU – the fastest we’ve ever seen on a Raspberry Pi offering around a 3x improvement in performance over the previous model!

Backing up that processing power is up to a whopping 8GB of faster LPDDR4 RAM – the Raspberry Pi 4 comes in 1GB, 2GB, 4GB and 8GB options.

With this new level of hardware, the Raspberry Pi 4 truly is a viable dual-display desktop computer.

The improved performance also makes the Raspberry Pi 4 the perfect candidate for a media centre, NAS, server, gaming emulator and many other resource-intensive applications.

Programming Perfection! For those just wanting to get creative with code, this is what the Raspberry Pi was born to do. The Raspberry Pi 4 maintains the familiar 40-pin GPIO, allowing for complex and interesting projects or even the addition of HATs and add-on boards to take your project further.

The dual-4K display option will make referencing tutorials and examples alongside your code a walk in the park, and the range of connectivity options such as WiFi (2.4GHz and 5GHz), Gigabit Ethernet, Bluetooth and USB means you can code with convenience anytime, anywhere.

Great for Beginners! The Raspberry Pi 4 is the perfect beginner's board as it includes the screen, network and peripheral connections you need to get up and running quickly and easily. Whilst we love the Raspberry Pi Zero 2, the additional connectivity options on Raspberry Pi 4 make it ideal for new users.

Simply plug in a micro-SD card, screen, keyboard/mouseand a power supply and you’re ready to enter the wonderful world of programming (the official starter kitincludes everything you need – a great gift option).

As always, the fantastic Raspberry Pi Foundation learning resources, combined with a huge community bursting with enthusiastic Raspberry Pi users, means you’ll never be far from help, support, tutorials and examples projects.

I'm assuming that I can run Pi-Hole + NAS + HA in an 8gb version?
    djnaff's avatar
    I only have a 4gb and run pi-hole - nas/samba - ha - wiregard vpn - openvpn - proxyserver - plex server for my mp3s - rclone for remote backups
    pi@pihole:~ $ free -m
total used free shared buff/cache available

What is this oi hole and vpn people are doing use it's always reccomended bur why can't I just use my ASUs router and nas device etc
    Alvie's avatar
Pi Hole, from what I understand, is a locally hosted DNS - generally to block ads. Basically translates hostnames to IPs, but it can also block certain hostnames requested. E.g. blocking adservice.google.com if anything (e.g. a news website in your phone's browser) requests it. That way, the ad content will never load.

You use it in conjunction with your router, i.e. use set the DNS that your router uses to your Pi-Hole, so it has to go through that.

You can also run a VPN on your Pi, this will allow you to connect to your home's network when you're outside of the home. This could mean controlling smart home, accessing locally hosted servers / file without port forwarding etc.

There is nothing stopping you from using your ASUS router and NAS. Your NAS operating system MIGHT have similar "apps" for DNS/Pi-Hole

In all seriousness I wish they did a revision of the pi4 like they did for the 3 a/b but just make it include 1 full size HDMI port. Saves then having to buy extra dongles for micro HDMI
    jamesdew's avatar
But they cost hardly anything, or you could just use a micro HDMI to HDMI cable. Why would they create a whole new product line to avoid you needing to buy a cable especially on a product like this.

Have one as a PI-hole server, excellent device. Recommend picking up a 120gb SSD when they're on offer, much better than booting from the SD card which burns out quick.
    johnthehuman's avatar
You only need to boot it once if it’s a pi hole, you shouldn’t be shutting it down. (edited)

if you are looking for x86 alternative look at wyse 5070 second hand on ebay for more or less the same price. Got 3 of those and loads faster then the Pi 4. Pi 4 is too old to compete in 2023 performance and price. We need Pi 5 with modern soc architecture to compete with the rest

voted hot btw cause availability at least
    Richdotward's avatar
I did the same. Wyse 3040 just for pihole and a wyse 5070 for my plex server. Wouldn't go back. Nice strong case, and real on off switch.
  9. gerardgimbert's avatar
Granted they're actually available, but is it a good price? I'm sure I only paid about this much for 4 and 8gb versions. Although that was around the start of lockdown before everything went nuts.

No it’s essentially RRP - welcome to HUKD

I had one a few years ago and set it up as a retro emulation machine for my TV. Was pretty cool playing Chuckie Egg on a 50” 4K telly .. heh

chuckie egg was such a vibe lol

I'm done with Pi's now. I've moved all my operating systems on to low powered PCs running Proxmox now.

    How will Raspberry Pi's survive....?
  13. jacksterJDM's avatar
In case this helps anyone, for a LONG time I was looking at how to get my videos on my external hard-drive playing and looking good on my TV. My Samsung TVs built in USB player sucked. I was looking at potentially a £400 NAS and PLEX.

Then I found out about OSMC (osmc.tv/). Installed it on a memory card, popped it in my raspberry PI, and the attached my external hard drive, and it works like a dream.

So I guess what Im saying is if you want a netflix like experience for your own external harddrive of video files, this Pi in the deal + OSMC is perfect.

These were supposed to be £35 at one time.
    Hermitmaster5000's avatar
...and your milk, eggs, petrol and anything else was cheaper a year ago too. I don't know why people expect electronics to somehow stay the same price forever (and the $35 one is the 1GB board I think).

I 3D printed my own case for mine and I use it with Octopi to control my Ender 5 pro

Amazon has the Pi 4 Model B for these prices:
    2GB - £85.99
    4GB - £84.99
    8GB - £108.99

What price would you say would be good value to reach before you'd buy?
Obviously this deal's 2GB compared to Amazon is funny.

I have the Pi 3 Model B+. Wouldn't mind upgrading at some point so I can use it more than a PiHole. Maybe to have Home Assistant. I know Pi3 case doesn't work on the Pi4 though
    Guess_What's avatar
Wait for rrp, you can usually find it on Okdo coming in stock sporadically. Don’t pay above rrp as it’s not worth it. 3B+ will work find unless you really need it. I say this as someone who upgraded to an 8gb Pi 4
  27. Helpful567's avatar
is this any good for retrogaming or do I need more memory?

2gb is plenty for a little retro box

I've bought one from Amazon for about £30 with the two controllers, heatsink, fan and a bag.

What is this good for? If you compare to android boxes, fanleas tiny pcs etc?
    jaizan's avatar
I've got a Raspberry PI running a Motioneye CCTV system. Admittedly I want a better CCTV system, but haven't got around to doing that yet.

I have used Pis for temperature logging in the past, but abandoned that as ESP8266 (Arduino) type boards are vastly superior for this application. More reliable, easier to set up and far lower power consumption.

I also tried using a Pi as an Ubuntu PC for use when travelling. Hook up to the hotel TV via a HDMI cable. The main problem with that was weak wifi reception (compared with Android devices) & dreadful lag on my mini bluetooth keyboard, although that might be due to the keyboard. I might revisit this.

The mini PC obviously has the superior hardware, but it depends what you want to do with it.

I'm quite tech savvy and love gadgets and computers.. but even I wouldn't know where to start with this or what to do with it

Nice cheap Linux device for browsing, media etc. or can be use as an ad blocker on local network to block ads for all connected devices.

Or as a cheap way to emulate games
  38. jzedward's avatar
good deal - great if you want a headless little server. I would probably recommend the 4gb pi400 (built in keyboard) if you want to use it as a pc. I take mine on hols and plug it into a telly - one day I'll get it set up as a travel router...
  39. muniphobia's avatar
Reading this with interest as I bought a Raspberry Pi 3B+ last week and have been looking at Pi hole etc
    rcom's avatar
If you haven't already, you might want to also look at Adguard Home. It's a very good alternative, and in some ways, better than Pi-Hole.
