How does PAC transfer/ final billing work when you cancel monthly mobile contract?

Hi

I took out a first 24 month O2 contract on Black Friday 2017 (only ever had PAYG before hence my confusion). My contracted is now ended and I have still been paying the rolling monthly fee the past couple of months.

My next bill (for 24th Nov 2019 - 24th Dec 2019) for £30 will be taken by DD tomorrow. I rang 02 today and asked to cancel my contract as I think you have to give 30 days notice.

I asked for a PAC number as I want to change to GiffGaff. I asked if there was some way it would be confirmed that my contract is cancelled and was told that it only happens when you transfer the PAC to the new provider.

So what will I be billed for? Do I wait to transfer the PAC until 23rd Feb or do I do it straight away? Am I having to pay the full month or am I going to get 2 further bills if I do that? Is my call today the 30 days notice or is It when I transfer the PAC?

I'm just confused how it works and what I will be paying for and when is the best time to port the PAC to GiffGaff so that I'm not paying double.

Thanks

Use the PAC code ASAP as Ofcom put a stop to any charges from the old provider after using the PAC code, so you would not need to give 30 days notice. You only need to leave 30 days notice if you are cancelling and not keeping your number. Once you use the pac code, your old contract is terminated. You'll receive a final bill from O2 within 14 days after using the PAC code with the DD being taken out 1-2 weeks later. You'll have a summary of the charges up until the date of the number transfer.

Yes, Ofcom changed it. I work for Carphone Warehouse so if I was wrong I’d have a lot of unhappy customers

Thanks everyone for responding. I really appreciate your help with this. I'll transfer the PAC as soon as my new SIM arrives.

You will be billed 30 days "I think" from when you asked for your PAC code so use it until about 25-28 before it runs out

yes but when you say as soon as you use the pac code your old contract terminates
what exactly do you mean by as soon as you use the code?
does this mean as soon as you transfer or give it to your new provider ie on that day
or does it mean after 1 or 2 days when the old number that you want to keep is actually transferred???? this is not clear at all and btw im out of contract with EE and keeping my old no
