Add on temporary driver to Direct Line Insurance Policy

Posted 18th Mar 2021
My policy is almost due for renewal which at present I have my two daughters on. However they very rarely drive the car and I'm considering just using the add on temporary driver if and when need as it'll save me about £70. I would be grateful if anyone who has used this could give me an idea of what they have been charged and if there is an Administration fee added on. Both daughters are in their 30s have been driving for over 13yrs and have no convictions.
Many thanks in advance.

Why not ask the kids for £35 a year for access to the car?

Have your daughters not got the part on their own insurance that lets them …Have your daughters not got the part on their own insurance that lets them drive any car therefore they will be covered on their own insurance

That's only third party cover. Presumably the OP wants them to be comprehensively covered.

Well it’s probably £35 for the week and £35 admin charge cuz they gonna make money....

Fair enough then i suppose £70 is a small price to pay for peace of mind

They both have their own cars so basically it's just for my peace of mind that if either of them need it when they visit or a car breaks down I could let them use mine.

I'm with Hastings (off topic, but their online service is useless), cost me £35 to add my daughter onto my car for a week while she was waiting on her new car. So £70 seems pretty good, as temporary might be quite expensive

I think I looked into adding my sister onto my policy when she was visiting from abroad. Pretty sure it was better to leave her on for the whole year with admin charges.

The £35 admin charge quoted above (plus increase in policy) sounds about my experience from memory. (edited)

You could put a voucher in each birthday card and state they have access to the car happy birthday

They will have informed them as it would be quite obvious from the policy text.
What you really mean is that people are being careless and not reading it.

Just call your insurer and ask them directly - it (the cost) depends on all sorts of factors that you might not necessarily want to give out on this forum.

I added my son onto my Direct Line as a temp driver over weekends he was home from College. He was 18 and recently passed his test. It was around £20 for fri evening to Sun evening.

You can add them for longer periods but I dont know cost. Id just ring Direct Line and ask them.

There is a limit to the number of times a year you can do it.

I always add a second driver onto my car. Seems to make my policy cheaper every time. I add them whether they will be using the car or not (edited)

I genuinely think you need to get more quotes at renewal, as there shouldn't be a big difference in having experienced drivers on your policy. If anything the price can actually go down as mentioned above... Definitely don't do temporary driver cover as you will be charged admin fees every time.

What about separate temp insurance? I used this when my daughters were learning to drive was much cheaper than adding them to my policy. There is a few available but I used aviva

Have you actually done a quote, you might find that removing them may actually increase the insurance cost?

Another thing to be wary of is if there is a max no of days, so for Hastings you can only temp add a person for a max of 28 days and you can only do that twice in the year.

Also most policies have the under 21 or 25 clause, found out the hard way when I was younger being cocky to a copper by waving my insurance document to which he pointed out I can't drive my mates car due to the age clause and ended up with6 points

The policy said 3rd party cover on other vehicles if insured but failed to see the star at the end of the wording (edited)

Thanks everyone I actually have my renewal quote in and it’s £322 for 4 of us on the policy. £256 to remove them. But I’ve been online and got a slightly cheaper quote to keep everyone on it. So I’ll call and hopefully they’ll match it. Thanks to everyone that had helped me with replies.

Which is why you have a cooling off period.

I’m sure read that you can be charged even during the cool off period if you decide to cancel.

A small admin fee and premiums for the days used, which frankly is fair enough?
