Payment authentication failing

Can anyone help please? **ETA I think after some more trial and erroring it seems to be an issue with 3D secure crashing when I navigate away from the browser???**

A couple of months ago I upgraded from Xiaomi Redmi 10 to 11. Transferred everything over using Gmail address.

Used to have Google Pay; now called Google wallet. Never used to have any issue using it for online purchases. I use Chase bank and again, there never used to be an issue doing the payment authentication. Moving from Chrome screen to Chase app to verify payment, back to Chrome to complete transaction.

Since getting my new phone this never works. I believe it also failed with a different bank card in the Wallet so I can only assume it's an issue with Wallet / Chrome / operating system other rather than the bank. When I return to Chrome after verifying with Chase app, the payment screen has invariably crashed or an error message comes up. It doesn't matter how many times I try this, the issue remains.

I installed and tried the same thing via Firefox but the same issue happened.

I cleared Chrome cache but that didn't help. I even cleared the whole storage so had to add Chase card back to Google Wallet but that didn't help.

Please can anyone suggest anything? It's driving me up the wall to have to go to my laptop each time I want to buy something online, so I can use my phone to verify and not then crash the payment authentication screen!!

Thank you.

ETA:

Thinking through this a bit more.
It's not bank specific as happens with my other bank too.
Not browser specific as happens with Firefox too.
Seemed to start going wrong when I got my new phone.

Ahhhhhhhhh

I experience similar issues on my Samsung phone. When it comes to authorising a payment, it normally gives two options - verify via bank app or SMS. I now choose SMS, so I don't have to navigate away from the browser. (edited)

Yeh I can do that for first direct but chase doesn't have that option - but a bit of a work around at least. Thank you for your reply 🙏

I can't remember the name for it , but my bank first direct , you have to let them know your changing phone , as you can't simply re install the app and log in....now I don't know if Google pay you need to do this , but if first direct can do it maybe Google pay is the same and you need to let them know etc, wish I knew the terminology more so I could be more specific but hopefully you've got the gist

Yeh I had to update them to get access to the apps etc when I got the phone. But I think this seems to be more an Android / 3D secure issue but that wasn't a problem before thank you for your reply

I sometimes have that issue on my 10 Pro, and find that my chances improve with turning off the vpn.
Also, some sites don't seem to allow time for a connecting handshake between the page and the £D payment system. Changing browsers to Incognito / Private mode sometimes sorts this.

    Thank you for this reply

    Vpn isn't on

Tried the incognito thing but no dice

    But thanks...!

So a bit of an update

The issue happens across both Chrome and Firefox

The issue happens if I manually type in my card details or use Google pay

The issue happens if I use different cards that require authentication

So it seems to be an issue to do with Android and 3D secure ????

    Android is up to date

Allowing notifications and pop ups on Chrome

As soon as I navigate away from Chrome screen to go into bank app to verify payment, on my return to Chrome the payment screen has crashed or frozen and become a "preview" screen

    Ahhhhh

Have you followed these right up to the point where you refer the problem to google?
    support.google.com/wal…=en
    support.google.com/goo…oid

Also, is this just happening in one location or many different locations - just wondering how good your new phone is compared with your last in terms of signal? wifi or otherwise (edited)

Thanks, unfortunately none of these relate to this specific issue but I appreciate your time and suggestions. It seems to very much be some kind of issue with the payment authentication step

    Go look at

    myaccount.google.com/security

    Or just search Google security.

Check devises linked to your account.
The payment and subscriptions (tab) I think it's called.
There you will see all your bank cards linked to your Google account.
Have a good look around removing old devices ect while your there (edited)

Thanks. I removed my previous device although suspect that's not the issue. But thanks for your input.
