Experiences of visiting Marrakech and Morocco

Posted 17th Apr 2023
Hi All, I've booked a trip to Marrakech. If you have visited can you offer reviews or advice. I'm not really the type for sitting by the pool all day so I'm hoping to get out and see some sights. Are there any places I should definitely head for or avoid? I'm also interested to hear about your experiences there and any advice you would have for a first time visitors. Thanks.

Went 4yrs ago to Marrakech, wife and I both have mobility issues and found the people very helpful. Like all places around the world there are going to be scoundrals but Morroco is one of the safest countries in the world. Of course you will get pestered, tourists always do wherever you are, but just take sensible precautions, do not be a show off by wearing loads of jewellery, keep cash secure, and wear clothing that respects the culture, the souks are like a maze and you can find just about anything there, if you want you can hire an official government guide to look after you and guide you round, they are reliable as they will loose they licence and living if there are any complaints, always always haggle and be prepared to walk away if you are not happy with the price, thay always start very high, rule of thumb was you should pay about 60% of the start figure, there are loads od restaraunts around, talk to guests where you are staying for insight, also check out trip advisor for any that get reccomended. Just keep your head on and have a great time, don't be drunk in the street, police are hot on it.

I've been to a few of the northern Moroccan cities (Tangier, Fes, Meknes) and absolutely loved them.

They are an assault on the senses so not for a relaxing trip (unless you spend all your time inside one of the stunning Riads or Daars), but culturally they are hard to beat.

They are very non-western destinations so if you want your western luxuries and familiarities, I wouldn't recommend going. However, Marrakech is probably the most Western-friendly part of Morocco.

Been once, never again. Outside of the hotel is a dump, that is putting it politely.

Really enjoyed Marrakech when I went with my wife about 6 years ago. Have your wits about you, though, as everyone is looking to rip off a tourist. We are quite experienced travellers so didn't fall for anything (as far as I am aware!)

Locals are very adept at spotting new arrivals, especially when you first arrive in the main square. Wife had her hand Henna tattooed within 30 seconds of stopping and we then had a 2 minute heated debate about not paying for it (we didn't). People will offer to act as your guide and take you via different places to sell you things. Just be firm and say no.

Rather than standing on the edge of the square taking in the sights, head confidently to a cafe/restaurant and get your bearings and catch your breath. Can be overwhelming but thoroughly enjoyable. The Riad we stayed in was a little oasis of calm

Lived and worked in Morocco for a few years around 2000. Only went to Marrakech once, as we were in Casablanca. Loved our time in Morocco, Casa is a lot less touristy and you get left alone a lot more than in Marrakech, where they tend to prey on the unwitting tourists. As others have said, if you're sensible, you'll be fine and some of the food is magical. My wife still yearns for the tagines we used to get there.

I'll get you started with the dialect

    Sukran - Thank you
La Sukran - No thank you
    majnoun - Crazy
    Halas - Enough
    Emshi - Go Away

(Although not nice I was advised to use the last two for any beggars etc that wouldn't just stop. They don't see it as an insult but know you've had enough)

I went about 6 years ago and had loads of money stolen from my hotel room.

My mother went with some friends a few months back and someone had their backpack slashed with a knife whilst it was being worn.

Sorry to sound so negative, but my advice would be to go somewhere else. The food and stuff is lovely, but i'd never feel safe there again.

I've been, Outside of the hotel it's an hell hole, If you're female. Make sure no flesh is on display etc..

Just to add, The hotel was fantastic, Food was spot on. Was 40c around the pool with tortoise freely roaming which was nice. Sadly outside of the hotel the people made me and my wife feel really uncomfortable. (edited)

I went a couple of years ago. The hotel was brilliant. We did a few guided trips around & also into Marrakech, and our tour guide did leave us for some free time but he advised us where to go & where to avoid. If I went back then it would definitely be under the care of a hotel-provided guide - it's one of the few places I've been where I've not felt comfortable being on my own.

So much that could be said and so little we know about you and your trip. Certainly check TripAdvisor. Visiting Marrakech - not really my fave tbh) is not the same as visiting Morocco. We've stayed in the old town a few times and had a good time. Use your loaf - never flash the cash and just be aware. Great idea to get a guided tour to orientate yourself. Take advice from those you can trust locally. Use the hotel concierge.Learn how to use the little taxis outside the souk properly. Don't be afraid to be firm by western standards if someone is being a pain. Be confident and don't look lost even if you are. Watch the mopeds in the souk.Be careful accepting ' help' from strangers - usually costs. I personally don't like the central square - it's just a pressurised tourist trap but you must see it. Best watched from the balcony of one of overlooking cafés - particularly at dusk as it changes. Don't point a camera at anyone there as they will demand money. Visit Al Bahriya fish place - by the Post office - but avoid the toilets :-). Super fresh fish and dirt cheap. There are money changers at the airport around the corner from the first ones with the big queues. Don't change money in the street. Generally only relatively posh places take card but it can surprise. Lovely short milky coffee in a glass is : nus nus. Go to have your senses assaulted and enjoy. (edited)

been in 2014, loved it. never felt unsafe. its very hussle bussle but you have to learn to be firm yet polite and say no to shop keepers selling their wares.

used to walk back with my OH very late at night through the narrow streets, never ever felt unsafe. I loved my time there personally.

Since you have booked, I would visit the Atlas mountains and Ouzoud waterfalls.

If the above 2 aren't your style then cancel and rebook elsewhere as its a dump.
