Aside from people saying 'weekend away, flowers, nice meal...etc', how would we all know what your wife likes?

Does she like hang-gliding? Race cars?

Need to give a lot more information or (better yet) try to get some info from your wife?

Comment above is right really - hard to say when we don’t know her.
Big birthday, a surprise nice weekend away would usually be the go to - but then, COVID! Though a really nice Airbnb is a good middle ground without too much outside interaction!
    Depends on budget too?
My dad bought my mother a Pandora bracelet for her 50th, genius on his part - he’s never stuck for a gift, just gets another charm for it! Definitely beats the time he booked a plumber for her birthday to finally fix the dripping pipe that had been driving her mad. (Don’t recommend that!)

Live on the edge and get her a Cadburys Milk Tray and a Happy 40th Birthday card. She’ll either kill you for just getting a Milk Tray or feel really great that you think she is really 40.

Surely if you’ve known your wife for 30 years then you’ll know what she likes, what she is in to, and what she already has. If you are really that stuck then just ask her what she’d like or where she would like to go for a weekend away if possible.

To be fair, some people just aren’t great at the gift thing!

You only need a non dormant brain to overcome that, it is effectively problem solving.

Should you be married to her if you don’t even know what she likes or able to surprise her

But surely a rubbish present from op would be more appreciated than a better one from someone else, as op chose themselves..

Some of us are just useless at buying gifts...the fear of getting it wrong etc.

I end up giving money as gifts, which probably costs me a lot more but it saves me from the anxiety that it gives me. I agree it's not very personalised but that's the way it is.
