Yi Home cameras - now with Google Home and Chromecast

Posted 27th Jul 2020
Just noticed recently that Yi have done the necessary and have made their Yi Home cameras viewable using Google Home and Chromecast. As the Yi cameras have been popular on HUKD I thought it would be useful to highlight this new functionality.

The process is described discussed in this thread on the Yi Forums.

The thread is a bit rambling as the link between Google Home and Yi was not initially stable but it's working for me at the moment. Although I do not have any, apparently the Yi IOT devices are now also supported. Note that some of the oldest Yi home camera devices do not work, I have an indoor 720p camera that doesn't work with Google Home.

Hope this is useful.

You'll need a voice command to do it. E.g. if you have a Google Mini, ask it to "Show [Garden] on the TV". That should once you have linked the cammeras through the Home app

Oh, one other big gotcha is that you have to use a Yi login to be able to get the link between Google and Yi to work. If you have used a 3rd party login like Facebook in the Yi app then you have to convert your account to have a Yi login. Yi are working on supporting the 3rd party logins but it's not working yet.

Doesn't work with Google Assistant on an LG smart TV, but maybe I have an old Yi camera.

I would probably contribute to the conversation in the Yi Forum thread so the developers understand what does and does not work.

Thanks mate! I’ll try borrow a google mini and try. Gutted if it is as it was only an extra tenner with my tv but didn’t bother at the time as we are already set up as a alexa home😔
