British Gas Smartmeter Trio2

Posted 5th Apr 2022
hi
BG came and fitted a smart meter a few months ago. I have never been able to use the app to view any usage info. this week I realised it had not been connected to the house WiFi network. BG were not able to really help me understand how it works. but I guess it just relays the data from the meter to BG server via WiFi?,anyway, once connected to WiFi I still have an issue with 'cloud service' and again BG can't help me. any suggestions from anyone who has experience with this is welcome. thanks. images of meter are below.

That's odd. I thought they had a sim card in and didn't need personnel WiFi (some homes won't have it). Mines definitely on a sim card which is located in the meter on my electric box outside. It failed when it was first installed and I reseated it. Then it connected.

Since Feb 16th my British gas and others can't show any of my information online. Apparently it is sending the data. British gas just can't display it on my app/Web page.

The Trio II does use your WiFi for live data despite what some others here have said.

That is the way I believed they worked. I would've thought if they were using your WiFi (and then the internet) to send the data back to BG you would have to give explicit permission for this.
Also, like you, my usage in app has not updated since 16/2.

It's not house Wifi. Mine has the same problem with the new smart meters. Old smart meter worked fine, they installed an "upgrade" and it can't access wifi. Different supply company. They are coming back tomorrow to replace it once again.

I know they talk to one another in a local wifi/radio network. Then the main one uses the sim card to send the data to the supplier.

That's for standard meter readings, not live data.

Live data is sent to their cloud API via your home's WiFi. They don't bother to set it up for you - it's something you have to discover yourself. (edited)

It’s got to be for both as it’s not using my Wi-Fi I checked my network for devices regularyit’s got to be for both

and since the metre as been installed my router has been changed so unless it connects by pixie dust it can’t be using home Wi-Fi (edited)

Where exactly are you viewing your live data?

How does it get updated when the standard rate changes? Does that happen over the cellular connection or WiFi?[Image] [Image]

The price updates should happen over cellular (since you don't have to setup the wifi), so that should always be fairly up to date. Not sure how quickly price changes come through. I didn't check the tarriff details on mine but the daily spend was noticeably higher straight away on 1st April.

I have setup the wifi on mine but to be honest it shows as not-connected more often than not.

Having the WiFi module fitted to to the IHD adds extra functions - like perhaps accessing consumption data on other devices but its nothing to do with how the meter normally communicates readings to the supplier and incoming info like messages and tariff - thats the comms hub etc job. There's no WiFi on mine so its just a bonus if you have it and its supported by your energy supplier and works. The tariff info appeared within hours along with a welcome message, then over the next day or so gas usage appeared on the display, but still waiting for supplier website to show consumption data.

47223574-wbu6a.jpgMy app just says this and has been since installation in February.
I can see consumption on the trio 2 which is useful.

You need to set this up on your monitor. It took me a while to suss this out but when you get to the Wi-Fi but you should see Wi-Fi off.You need to use the arrows on monitor to scroll to the change network. It looks greyed out but once you scroll onto it you’ll see the blue box frame around Wi-Fi off move to change network.Once it’s on that select the centre British Gas logo & it’ll switch the Wi-Fi on.After that just follow the instructions & just use the arrows to manoeuvre around & everytime you want to move to next stage press the British Gas logo. There’s a video on YouTube if you’re stuck.
