Boiler service quote

Posted 13th Apr 2023
Had a boiler installed about a year ago and it's time for it's annual service to keep the 10year warranty in check.
As this is my first time having a boiler service, what is the average cost and would there be any additional mandatory work that would be required to have done?

What I do is join the cheapest boiler cover that comes with free annual service. Works out cheaper for me.

    Thanks this is useful.
If I sign up now can I request the boiler service asap as my new boiler just past the first year and has a service message on the boiler LCD.

Worth noting and asking potential suiters what is involved. For many years I had my boiler 'serviced' and lately found out it included nothing other than a quick check (20-30 mins). Found someone else, who took over 2 hours (replaced a few parts) to strip it down and clean thoroughly as part of the service. I suspect most boilers are not serviced properly (edited)

We've had a boiler serviced by a local reputable company, readly good reviews, proper online invoices, real professional outfit, seemed it anyway
We had the fault so i called out the manufacturer recommended service engineer (paid for by boiler Insurance), he explained to me the key areas that had been missed in the previous 4 years of servicing
I'd see if you can find a manufacturer approved service person, probably will only cost a bit more, however hopefully a better overall package

They just seem to put a tool on it that takes various readings (check CO2 levels etc) without stripping it down or cleaning it. We pay £10 a month which covers a service and any central heating repairs. So I reckon a service would be £60 - £70. (edited)

No extra mandatory work to be done. Just as long as the plumber is gas safe certified and you've got evidence you've paid for them to service. Easiest thing to do would be to just get the folks that installed it to service it. That way you've got complete traceability all the way back.

Thanks all. I'll just give the engineer a call that installed the boiler from boxt.

My guy charges £85 with a gas safety cert. South Wales just outside Cardiff. Took him about an hour or so.

Probably depends a lot where you live?

I think British Gas charge £99 for a one off service and £93 for a rolling annual deal, so it should be normally cheaper than that.

Same issue here; the warranty was extended from 7 to 10 years if regularly serviced (last 3 by the installers). Gradually gone up over the years and is now £135.... I noted that any parts are charged at full retail + 30%! Love to get rid of them if I could.

Check if they are actually servicing or just doing a safety check. I've seen lots of reports that BG just do a check rather than a proper service.

You could also google the model of the boiler + 'service kit' to see what the manufacturer expects to be changed as part of a service. Often they say to replace seals/gaskets that are disturbed but the guys on the ground assess if they think its needed or not. Some also expect the electrodes to be replaced at the service - is that really needed every year?

"Service kits" are just parts that regularly fail sold as a bundle to engineers, they're most certainly not expected to be changed every single year.

I had a verbal quote of £80. I'm in south West England. I better check what's included in the service

Had a new boiler fitted in December by a mate (gas safe registered) and will be using the manufacturer for servicing as the boiler has a 12 year warranty (Intergas)
