Days Gone: An Action-Adventure Survival Horror for PS4
Released on April 26, 2019 for PS4, Days Gone is one of the most sophisticated, absorbing, and massive action role-playing games ever created. Developed by SIE Bend Studios, but marketed by Sony, it combines elements of survival horror, exploration, third-person fighting, and driving simulations, to create a chillingly realistic post-apocalyptic game-world.
As usual with major game releases, Days Gone doesn't come in one version, and there are numerous editions to choose from, while prices can vary between retailers. This hotukdeals buyer's guide will introduce the game, and offer plenty of tips for purchasers who want to find the very best Days Gone Deals on PS4.
The Origins of Days Gone
SIE Bend started out as Blank, Berlyn and Bend, back in 1993, becoming Eidectic in 1996, and launching a career as an innovative PlayStation and PC games developer. Early successes included the stealth-based Syphon Filter in 1999, a sequel in 2000, and two more titles in the franchise – which built the studio a formidable reputation in PlayStation gaming circles.
The seeds of Days Gone were laid in the mid-2000s, when the studio produced Resistance: Retribution, which incorporated survival features, and created a vivid 1950s gaming environment. And the company perfected its action skills with Uncharted: Global Abyss for the PS Vita, which debuted in 2011.
After that, resources were totally dedicated to SIE's marquee title, which would eventually see the light of day as Days Gone. It's been almost a decade in the making, but now SIE Bend's magnum opus is ready for release, and has captured the attention of PS4 owners across the world. It' a heavily narrative-driven title, so how does the plot work, and what can players expect? Let's find out more.
Getting to Know the Storyline in Days Gone
As is the case in so many modern console games, it all started with a viral epidemic. In Days Gone, a globe-spanning contagion has had the effect of whipping up ordinary people into a murderous rage. This creates a zombie-style scenario, except that the zombies are going berzerk, instead of plodding around seeking out brains.
The player takes the role of Deacon St. John, a combat veteran who drifts around camps in the northwest USA, trying to avoid what are now known as “freakers”. But things are complicated by the presence of uninfected cultists called “rippers”, who have placed a bounty on Deacon's head (and that of his friend Boozer).
Then there's Sarah, Deacon's wife. Before the game begins, we learn that Sarah was evacuated from a base as the freakers approached, but Deacon stayed behind due to lack of space in the chopper. The two were separated, possibly forever, as Deacon learns that the evacuation centre Sarah was sent to had been overrun by freakers. But there's a glimmer of hope, as we discover that NERO – the disaster recovery agency which ran Sarah's camp – is still functional. Deacon resolves to seek out his wife, using whatever means are available.
The plot of the game itself introduces plenty of additional characters, from NERO scientists who have vital information, to survivalist camps that are feuding with the rippers, and battle-hardened militias. All the time, the freakers are a menace, and are continuing to evolve due to the virus, making them ever-more challenging adversaries.
We won't tell you what happens next, whether Deacon and Sarah are reunited , or how humanity responds to the freaker threat. It's enough right now to know that the game has a complex storyline. This drags you in, creating a disturbing vision of the future, while opening up plenty of avenues for exciting escapades.
What to Expect from the Gameplay in Days Gone
The Days Gone gameplay will be familiar to fans of exploration shooters and survival horror franchises like Resident Evil. Players take control of Deacon from a third-person perspective, allowing them to wander around Oregon, and see what's in the immediate neighbourhood. The game revolves around tasks, which are primarily dictated by the storyline. So it's not a completely free-form sandbox-style adventure. There's a linear path from the opening to the ending, and players are encouraged to follow it.
Combat is a crucial element of the game, as you'd expect, and Deacon fights a wide range of enemies, from infected wolves and bears, to freakers and rippers. None are easy to defeat, but players, fortunately, have a variety of weapons and skills at their disposal.
Stealth plays a more prominent role in Days Gone than many other titles, with gamers being able to crouch in the brush as enemies approach. And Deacon is extremely agile as well, being able to leap and roll away from danger. It's just as important to know how to avoid fights, as it is to win them – adding another element to the gameplay.
Stealth plays a more prominent role in Days Gone than many other titles, with gamers being able to crouch in the brush as enemies approach. And Deacon is extremely agile as well, being ready to leap and roll away from danger. It's just as important to know how to avoid fights, as it is to win them – adding another element to the gameplay.
When it comes to fighting, there are two primary modes: melee and long-range weapons. Melee weapons can take out 2-3 weaker enemies in short-range combat, while weapons like sniper rifles are ideal for picking off enemies you can't get to in person. There are also some neat additions to the fighting mechanics. These include rocks that can be used to distract enemies, the use of explosives, and the presence of bear traps that act a little like low-tech landmines.
Then there's trust. Days Gone uses a “trust” rating to govern how Deacon gets on with NPCs. Lose trust, and you can find that a whole camp turns on you. Build trust, and you'll gain bonuses like extra weapons, and upgrades to your motorcycle. It has to be built up every time you visit a new camp, but given the potential rewards, it's worth making an effort.
Finally, players will be able to get around quickly if they keep their motorcycle in good shape. Deacon's Drifter Bike is his pride and joy. It's creaking and old, but the more you play, the more you can upgrade and repair it, converting a clapped out, ancient vehicle into a sleek (and totally customisable) beast.
Does Days Gone Have Multiplayer?
Anyone wondering is Days Gone multiplayer is going to be in for a disappointment. Unfortunately, the developers elected to make the game single-player only, with no online or local cooperative modes available. Instead, the game is designed to be a single-player experience, with solo missions, and solo exploration. Not everyone will like that, especially when other survival/apocalyptic horror titles have embraced multiplayer in a big way.
On the other hand, the gameplay is flexible and forgiving for all levels of player. Gamers aren't stuck with the same level of difficulty, so inexperienced players don't need to worry about hitting a brick wall. Difficulties vary from easy, to normal, to hard, and they are pitched pretty well for average players.
It's worth noting that DLC packs will introduce the "Survival Mode", which ratchets up the difficulty considerably. In that case, if you want to experience the game at its most atmospheric, but still progress, it could be worth checking out a Days Gone walkthrough. Gaming sites like IGN have already produced walkthroughs, explaining everything that gamers need to know.
What Has the Gaming Press Said About Days Gone?
There's certainly been plenty of buzz about Days Gone since development started, but now that the game has arrived, what is the gaming press saying? The press verdict isn't everything. Plenty of games have reviewed poorly but sold well, and vice versa. Even so, Days Gone review feedback from respected journals will be a handy signpost for buyers who aren't sure whether it's the game for them.
The Guardian is pretty representative of industry opinion, calling it a “game of fun and fury”, but one which ultimately doesn't have the content to match up to classic titles. Likening it to Far Cry and Last of Us, the paper complimented the detailed surroundings, and the general visuals, as well as the “creepiness” of the freakers, and the post-apocalyptic atmosphere. So far, so good. But the reviewer wasn't persuaded by the storyline, suggesting the core narrative was diluted by too many side quests. And the range of NPCs felt like a letdown, with too many “grizzled survivalist” types, and not enough emotional depth.
Games Radar felt much the same, calling Days Gone, “scrappy, yet satisfying”. The survival elements worked well, the visuals were lush, and the sheer size of some of the set-piece freaker battles impressed the reviewer. But minor bugs and a sense of disjointedness infected the feel of the game, leading to a 3.5/5 rating.
If anything, IGN was harsher, calling the missions “repetitive” and “uninteresting”, with particular criticism for the flashbacks that SIE Bend used to tell the history of Deacon and Sarah (“like bad high school drama”). The lack of humour also came in for criticism, along with a host of bugs that should probably have been ironed out before release.
Overall, Days Gone review feedback has been underwhelming. But here's the thing: Days Gone is one of those games where industry reviews tend to be less favourable than actual gamer feedback. Often it's the other way round, but here, Metacritic user feedback is better than the scores awarded by magazines and websites. It could be that the demanding attitude of reviewers missed out on simpler pleasures that everyday gamers have picked up on. And it could well be that Days Gone is the game for you. So don't be put off by poor reviews.
Different Days Gone Editions Available via hotukdeals
When big games come out, they tend to appear in numerous editions, and that's the case with Days Gone. However, it's worth reiterating here that there is no chance to play Days Gone on PC, and no edition of Days Gone on Xbox One. At the moment, this is a purely PS4 experience, and there's no evidence that alternative platforms will be catered for. Having said that, here are the major PS4 buying options that gamers will find at hotukdeals:
Days Gone Standard Edition – The cheapest version of the game, the Standard Edition features a download or physical copy of the game itself, and the “dynamic” Days Gone theme, but nothing else.
Days Gone Digital Deluxe Edition – Available only for download, this deluxe version features the game as well as a host of additional digital material. Players receive a digital version of the Days Gone art book, extra music, extra bike skins, and unlocked skills. All of these can give them a significant advantage when they start the game.
Days Gone Special Edition - Another notch up from the Standard Edition, the Special Edition comes with a steel bookcase, an art book, and a physical copy of the soundtrack (see below for what it misses out on, though). Players will receive skill and weapon unlocks, bike skins, and music unlocks as well, so there's plenty to help players get up and running.
Days Gone Collector's Edition – The Collector's Edition is full of additions that fans will love. It comes with a Days Gone statue of Deacon and a model of his bike, features a steel book, 6 Days Cone collector's pins, a stunning art book, a physical copy of the soundtrack, a set of gnarly decals, and digital goodies like bike skins, weapon unlocks, and extra in-game music. It's a must for serious players, but comes at a high price – so check for discounts at hotukdeals before making a purchase.
Players can choose to opt for the digital download or a physical copy. As usual, downloading is somewhat time-consuming (the standard version amounts to around 67 GB), and it can only be downloaded from the PlayStation Store.
Will Days Gone Have DLC?
Yes, Days Gone is scheduled to receive a range of DLC updates soon. That should overhaul the code and deal with bugs flagged by reviewers, while adding a host of new missions, weapons, and characters.
Starting in June 2019, Sony announced a packed schedule of Days Gone DLC releases. DLC would be free to download for all owners, and the plans include some genuinely exciting add-ons. For instance, the first pack would add “Survival Mode” to the difficulties available, putting players in the wilderness with virtually no assistance, and maximum tension.
Additionally, Sony announced weekly “challenges” during Days Gone seasons. This could include the Drifter Bike, specific combat challenges, or the chance to battle vast zombie hordes for significant rewards. So don't assume that the original release is the final word. Days Gone has been designed to evolve (a little like the freakers you'll battle against). Expect new cities, landscapes, game modes, weapons – and much, much more.
