Could someone explain why this is not a good bike? Many thanks.
A bike very similar to this put my mate off cycling permanently :(

No bike snob here - you could probably get a nice hardtail in the sales.
not a good deal.
Sereiously? Just looking at that frame with the "full" suspension you should be able to save a further £119.99. Never seen a bike with front disc and rear v brakes - not a bike expert but that is bizarre.. Main point is just avoid as the rear "suspension" makes it useless. I read budget below (at least)£500 and certainly avoid rear suss.

p.s. not voted either way - if you just buy a bike on heat on here then you deserve what you get!

Why not get the 9mm QR version? Its the same and ony costs £119.96, £32 cheaper than the fork in the original post.

http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_873023_langId_-1_categoryId_234416

Cold I'm afraid...

That is the most ridiculous statement. If 9mm quick release was as good as 20mm bolt through then no bicycle company would bother making 20mm bolt through axel forks. Its more expensive for a reason. And the point of this post is that if you wanted the 20mm version, its £40 cheaper than other shops. So FOR THIS ITEM it is surely a deal from Halfords??

Sorry for ranting, but it has really bugged me. Its like saying I want a football shirt with long sleeves... "but the short sleeve version is cheaper so I vote the deal cold"... it doesnt make sense. If you have already decided that you want the long sleeve one, then why would you suddenly buy a different product?

Sorry for ranting, and apologies if no-one else agrees with me.

I would consider carefully before buying this. THere are alot of 2012 bikes reduced at the moment and companies very happy to price match and beat each other.

For example kona tanuki 2012 £1200 to £1020 - email them and they will bring this down to below £1000. I emailed this company and they took £75 off when I stated I would purchase the same bike from a different store.

http://www.cyclestore.co.uk/productDetails.asp?productID=52907&categoryID=64

I think boardman offer good value but if you go for this take it to a proper cycle shop and ask them to check it out to ensure everything set up proper.

Any comments on why the cold votes?

Maybe because its Halfords, not really known for good quality bikes, more 'run of the mill' outlet.

Boardman bikes are certainly not run of the mill...

I was saying halfords was 'run of the Mill' not Boardman Bikes
I'm going to be getting this to replace my Scott Aspect 10 Hardtail. Was looking at the Spark 70 but the Boardman FS is better specced and cheaper. Quite like the idea of the 2x10 gearing too.

Here's a review, 4.5/5 stars ain't bad :

good price but after buying 2 muddy foxes in last 4 years i'd recommend staying well away. First bike front and rear derailler broke second one the actually frame had a hairline crack never seen it before and neither had guy in shop just a heads up with bikes you tend to get what you pay for.

I would avoid as well - we got a different bike but at a similar discount - bolts for mudguards were missing and Muddyfox customer services were shocking. Told me bike was old stock (fair enough), said they couldnt send me the missing part, would have to send full mudguard set (after the 3rd phone call) - sent me a completely different mudguard which wouldnt fit. From that point on completely disinterested and couldnt take back to ARGOS as I'd let him ride it (which would be fine becuase the new mud guard was on the way).
Also check EVERYTHING about the bike when you receive it and not do what we did. Bought one from Argos just before xmas and was home delivered with some amount of self -assembly required. No problem or so I thought. Put bike together in a basic fashion so daughter could see it on xmas day. With the weather being so awful lately only now got round to setting it up properly i.e. adjusting brakes, gears etc to discover the front wheel is badly warped.

As it is outside the 30 day returns period they have asked us to get an independent report from Halfords etc outling whether it is a manufacturing fault before they will consider repairing/replacing it.

My fault I know but just a warning to be aware.

Also worth check your local Poundland / 99p Stores, if you're considering this bike as a present, or any bike really, as they have some good accessories you could add, such as multi functions front & rear lights, lock cables, foldway stand, bike pump, and useful things like puncture repair kits, foldaway bike spanner / hex set, and even bike inner tubes. They also had some mud guards and bike covers, seat covers, but these aren't very good imo.

BTW, here's a better view of the bike....

I believe that Rip60 is more versatile because you can use rotational moves as the straps are not fixed in the middle, also you get an 8 week DVD exercise program and additional bonus discs.
Is this twice as good as RIP60?

why? just think: if someone posted those sorts of comments every time there's a deal you like, would you find it clever or funny or helpful?

Hmmm, Well I'm gonna buy one Clarks CMD-8 for £18. If its rubbish its not a huge hit and then I shall invest in a set of BB-5s as a long term option. People seem to automatically suggest Avids so they must be good.
Can't say I've had any problems adjusting the BB5s myself. Very simple. Good budget brake, you pays your money, takes your choice.
I've read about people fussing about the BB5s. They are supposed to be hard to adjust unlike the BB7s. I've found some clarks CMD-8s and Tektro Aquila. Anyone have any experience with any of these disc brakes?

all i know is im gunna pay 365 ish fully including a £35 purchase fee at the end of the supposed hire!
HMRC says that at the end of year 1, your >=£500 bike is worth 25% of its retail value.

So, for one year, you'll pay about £28.75 per month (total of £345) then, to take ownership imediately, you'll pay £125 so a total of £470.

The workaround is to still pay the £28.75 per month for 12 months but then extend the hire for another 3 years. Typically you'll pay a 'hire deposit' equal to the value according to HMRC after 4 years (which is 7% for a >=£500 bike). You are now hiring the bike for £0 per month for those three years and taking ownership at the end of year 4 having paid a total of £380.

Companies are tending not to pass on VAT saving either, since AstraZeneca got nailed by the European Court.

Hasn't the taxman screwed up that scheme?

nah think it works out 9 quid at the end!

this is what was on the royal mail c2w/halfords scheme

"Thank you for your patience while we made some changes. The key change that affects you is that the Inland Revenue have increased the value of the bike at the end of the hire. If Royal Mail Group chooses to give you the option to purchase the equipment at the end of the hire, there may be a tax liability which for a £500 bike will be no more than £9 for a basic rate taxpayer or £18 for a higher rate taxpayer."

it should be the same regardless who your with!"

Its been £100 for a couple of weeks now.

Its a great price for a good functional dropping seat post IF you dont mind stripping it down to clean it every month or so and can put up with the sideways wobble of the saddle due to inherent design flaw with the clamp.

This version is much better than the remote cable operated one, which generally gets in the way.

These are the tyres I've put on http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=36215 along with puncture resistant inner tubes for good measure.

Not got a tape measure to hand - but it is a big bike, - I'm 6ft and its just about right.

Previous bike was a 19" frame which while it was good for off road always felt very small.
Can I ask the people who have assembled, is the min 73cm inside leg measurement realistic?

Cheers
ash1293;6689908
Tyres are fine but are your average chunky off road pattern.

Because I mainly use on the road to and from work a narrower tyre with less rolling resistance makes for a smoother/quicker ride.

what tyres did you opt for? any links?

Right - all built.
Tyres are not road friendly - more trail/off road. Not a prob as I swapped for puncture resistant road tyres and tubes.

Hi thanks for the info, what do you mean by 'not road friendly' ?

Do you mean they are dangerous/not good grip or do you just mean hard work ?

I ask because the bike in the box I have is for my son.

Cant afford this. What would be a good 2nd hand fork and what would I expect to pay. Budget is £50

Or - how do I put more air in my RST 416s that I already have on my old hardtail carrera banshee?

Dont buy second hand forks. they will be shot.. you're better of saving a bit longer and buying these, you wont be dissapointed (if youre used to RSTs).. ;)

I've had a couple of pairs of '00 Rock shox judy race in the past and they were fairly good. Usually a pair or two floating about on ebay. The race ones are adjustable and lightweight. Avoid Judy TT's.
The rockshox darts are the current entry level ones but they weigh a ton.

A second hand fork at this price will always be a bit of a risk but for under £50 I'd look out for something of reasonable quality with fairly simple workings in decent condition, like an old Rockshox Judy or Indy. I'm still getting great service out of a pair of 1997 Indy SLs I bought on ebay a few years back for under £30 - I've never got round to replacing them since they're reliable, work great, no maintenance, and super light.
I suppose it's the same as buying an old banger or a Ferrari - both will get you from A-B!

hell of a lot diferent though in the ferrari.. or top end bike with GOOD top end parts. they last longer are lighter make you go faster and less servicing. (im a cycle tech lol) hence why i wouldnt pay less than a G for a bike. these cheapos that are 75 notes last a year oir two and WILL be serviced within 6 mths (mostly)/ these forks are mid range level and are good enough for me to pound to death :D

Good price for Rockshox Tora's, especially as bike components have all recently had price hike. NOTE: The fact you can get a horrible bike for £40 DOESN'T make this a bad deal. Rockshox Tora 302…

I put Dart 3's with the poploc remote on the wifes Scott - very impressed with them - good price too - they came suitable for V's & discs. Paid around £95 ish delivered a year ago from www.winstanleysbikes.co.uk , which included the poploc. About £45 cheaper than CRC at the time.

Good price for the Tora's though if you've got discs.

Darts and Tora's are a bit heavy for my likeing (hence the V brakes) had discs in the past and disnt feel much of an improvement to be hoenst.

It's the pic from their site, I suppose it is one they hoofed from RS. I'd beleive the text over the picture.

Anyone know of some decent forks with V brackets?

Is there a 'best before' date on these??;-)

Optimum is between 21 and 25 years in my experience but some mature with age. Stay away from really fresh ones as they can get you in trouble!:whistling:
Not a good idea to mix sweet and savoury in my opinion. :whistling:

Hot deal but get the Cro-mo ones if you ever plan to use them off road, as hi-ten steel bends quite easily.

Ah well, hope some people get them. I'll expire it, but there are some other good deals still on there (especially that stem) so if anyone wants to post a new sale deal please do...

PS Please do post good bike part deals if you spot them, or similar niche things; whilst they don't tend to get too hot or too much coverage there are enough people on the forum who appreciate it to make it worthwhile :)
All gone:x
Voted STEAMING HOT!!

Stunning price for these forks - shame I've just bought some second-hand forks for £57 - these would have been a far better buy.

Well since you asked for comments from "professional cyclists" here's mine.

Dont buy a full-suspension bike for under £500........simple as that.

That photo of the guy in the forest with the full-sus bike, i just wouldnt suggest anyone try that unless they want to be buying a new bike the next weekend.
Its most likely going to break soon, and will be full of cheap components in order to spend the money on making it look nice by having suspension that will barely work.
An "alloy" frame, ie Steel will be heavy as hell, and with the full sus bike having thicker frame tubing and extra bits welded on for the Y-Frame etc its just going to be ridiculously heavy. Certainly for off-road useand anything involving hills.

Before i get flamed, there was a couple people asking for professional opinions or asking for professional bikes, so just simply giving a professional opinion.

Thanks for your expert & honest opinion HaggisHunter.:)

Yeah it will be heavy. If it for the occaisional run down the shops or down the tow path you should be ok but if you want to do a bit more you are better off spending £200 or more and getting a low-end GT or Claud Butler for you first bike.

Bought one a month back when they were £59.99 got my 3% QUIDCC back as well. The bike is grand, I've had no problems with it. I went for the in-store pick-up. Truthfully it's not the best bike in the world but does the job.
Cheers for all the extra info and opinions guys :)
Hi,
These look like universal cycle bicycles. Personally i wouldn't go near them, because of the quality (i used own a bicycle business). Used get tons of problem with them. If you would like a bicycle which is less heavy go for aluminum frame usually saying 7005. If you would like quality bicycle try falcon, claud butler, ideal etc.
rockinter
For that price I don't think you can go wrong with any of those bikes. I think if you want something with better spec and weight is particularly an issue you should be looking at a bigger budget. Mine cost £400 and is light, but my partner paid £90 for hers and it is heavier but I wouldn't describe it as anything like heavy.
