Is it me or are CD-Rs getting more expensive by the years?

Yeah, it's ridicularse: I was getting 100 Maxell DVD R (+ or - ) (and the better quality ones) for £13 from Play.com about 2 years ago! The 50 packs were about £7! (Again, good quality Maxells)
Now, the prices have almost DOUBLED! WTF is going on?
Is it me or are CD-Rs getting more expensive by the years?

Thanks i have changed the Link
I would like to say if your just sticking Movies etc on them, then cheaper the better plus we dont always want to buy 25.
Seems decent option for +R branded discs.
No doubt somebody with more knowledge can helpfully coment on the dye, but at this price I suspect it's irrelevant.
Get deal link currently not working for me, but this does:
http://www.wilko.com/memory-cards-dvds+cds/maxell-dvd-disc-dvd+r-x-10/invt/0289089
Also DVD-R for the same price.

Although not a great review of them: "Generally the product is fine, i purchased 40 discs, 4 packs of ten, i have a disc failure rate of 20%"

A 20% failure rate is not good.

Deal must be in that store only, went to my local large Tesco as the deal is not online and they had no sush discs on sale. The supervisor at the desk phoned as i waited and told me it's not nationwide. I showed him the photo above and he told me Tesco don't even stock those discs in the coloured packaging!
This deal site has cost me £30 in fuel travelling to certain stores for deals that don't exist, thanks!

Well of course, that receipt and screen cap from the Tesco website must have been falsified! Of course they stock them. Perhaps your branch doesn't stock them, but people don't seem to be able to understand that not all of Tesco's offers are uniformly provided amongst all Tesco stores. I don't know why people complain about HUKD wasting their time and money, it should be fairly obvious to all by now that it's a gamble.
I think I am just unlucky as I have never once managed to get any 'super' Tesco deal.
I have visited my local stores but there is never even any evidence of the deals at all.

(I don't mean this particular deal I mean Tesco 'super' deals in general that are posted here.)

Hot. Good price. I've had a box of these for ages now and I'm constantly re-writing new bluray films to them (ripped from (rented) originals). They are very stable - never had any read or write problems with them. That said, the family and I handle a disc how it's meant to be handled! :-)

I believe that Panasonic will have run some accelerated ageing tests on the media. They would also run simulations, but bear in mind that these simulations are not "real life", they are merely predictions on what they believe will happen.

Hopefully better than the Met Office come up with on a daily basis.

Stated archive life is 50 years

how do they know this? do they have a time machine?

Oh my goodness, what a ridiculous comment to make.

Panasonic are not some dodgy backstreet factory. They do extensive tests on the discs with proven technology, DOH, they stress the disc etc and that's how they know the archive life is at least 50 years minimum, in reality it will probably be a lot more than that.

For goodness sake it's not rocket science.

You are 100% completely wrong, there is no way to know if something will last 50 years without having 50 years to test it. Fact.

Agreed. Overpriced at that, too.

Yeah Blu-ray blanks are so much cheaper and everyone's DVD recorders can write to them ;)

You're right that this is a pretty normal price for these (and yes they're over-priced but so are blu-ray disks).

If i have a 1tb hdd how can i access blu rays on that? Is it the same as downloading a dvdrip only a larger file size? What is the typical blu ray movie file size? Or can i rip blu ray in some way from my ps3 onto the external hdd? bit confused here.

For HD movie there is a different format so instead of .avi file you will get .mkv.

The problem that you have is that the PS3 does not play .mkv but it does play .mpeg. There are some free sw that you can use to convert the .mkv to mpeg and you do not loose any quality and if you have a decent PC you can do it pretty quick and then stream the mpeg from the PS3.

Hope this helps

I'm considering getting 2TB HDD for £80 instead of buying blanks.... Especially as the BR burners are so expensive

True, but I still archive to optical (DVD) as I don't trust a single (or even mirrored) device to hold my data.
Even if 10% of the discs become unreadable due to degradation that's better than a drive packing in.

I agree, I've been using external hard drives in pairs (a main and a mirror) for my HD Camcorder Videos but this still makes me nervous as both are connected to the same PC - what happens if something catastrophic happens which destroys all the data on both drives? I'm buying a Blu-Ray writer this week so I can have permanent copies kept elsewhere in the house.

I too have used these disks. I did have to upgrade my burner as initially they wouldn't burn. But since that I have burned many without coasters.
One of the places I use the disks is in my Toyota navigation system. I'm sure that would complain if it couldn't read the second layer. So thumbs up for me.

These discs have an MID of UMEDISC-DL1-64.

Avoid like the plague or swine flu!

Let me elaborate.

The old Aone Dual Layers were branded "Aone Plus+" and had a MEDIA ID code of RICOHJPN-D01-67. These discs were fine if burnt with a DVD Writer that likes to write to cheap media like this such as a Pioneer or LiteOn.

The new Aone Dual Layers which seem to have been introduced a few months ago and branded as "Aone Premium" have a MEDIA ID code of UMEDISC-DL1-64.

These discs are HORRIBLE. 97% of the time the discs will be coasters because the second layer is unreadable.

Just scan them with Nero DiscSpeed or DVDInfoPro and all shall be revealed.
Plenty people slagging these off then point me to some good ones at the same price delivered.

I bought a pack of these about 6 weeks ago.
I wouldn't recommend them to anyone.
I tried burning x360 backups at 2.4x on various drives, two pioneer's, and a phillips and I found that although the PIONEER's had better success at burning them, the verifications were a bit hit and miss.

Seem to be OK burning the first layer, but struggle at layer change and produce the odd coaster here and there. I think I had around a 60% success rate, so not recommened.

I seem to have much more success with the Ritek D01 media which give a 100% success rate.

WOW it looks like we have to be extra careful in here these days, we have so many insiders from the companies. Well I guess that could play both ways.

I would never buy media from SVP ever again.

Their customer support staff have their heads so far up their @sses.

Last discs I got from them were damaged and it's been like getting blood from a stone trying to sort it out. They blamed the courier and haven't got back to me for several weeks.

Can't argue with you there to be honest. I'd love is someone suggested a good cheap AND reliable alternative to SVP, but there doesn't seem to be one. Haven't had a problem with any orders since they changed hands a while back, so I've yet to test how good their returns & support is now.

Is the lack of love for SVP the main reason these aren't viewed as so hot a deal? I can understand if that's the case ;-)

I'd avoid Sony tapes like the plague.

They're cheap for a reason.

For all your cheap DV tape requirements use www.toptape.net

I see that the retailer you mention doesn't like Sony either - so it must be **** ........... (or maybe they just can't match this price as there's not enough profit). You seem pretty clued up, Scissorhands; I was just looking at your other posts and mostly you've been disappointed with just about everything.

Don't know if anybody has heard of CLEARANCE BARGAINS, they are Argos but trade under that name and sell Argos products at very low prices but they sell 10 of these for £9.99. My BF picked up a Sony Handycam starter pack too for £2.99, with bag, battery and mini-DV tape.
Ive never had any problems with sony tapes and I work with them on a semi pro level with cannon xm2 digi cameras. Usually i get my tapes on ebay though where they are usually a lot cheaper but given that postage can be dropped these do look like an excellent deal!

I just got through some of these (made in Taiwan) and had to bin between 10 and 15 of them. Not sure if I want to risk getting them again. But is a hot price.

Yeah, the top level access is topsites and shells where things are available first and are then upped to newsgroups, FXP'd to public ftps (pubs) or torrented but the site ops usually ask for a monthly fee or something for topsites and shells so the best is newsgroups for us "commoners" :whistling:

It depends entirely what you're looking for. If you're after rare cult movies for example you'll only find them on private bittorrent trackers like cinemageddon, where people actually capture them from VHS tapes and upload to the tracker. If, on the other hand, you just want the latest hollywood sh*te, etc. then pay for your newsgroups and away you go. :whistling:

Not really, usenet is better than torrents (what isn't?) but it's hardly the best source for everything. A small percentage of everything that gets released every day ever makes it from sites to usenet (or torrents).

I'd have to agree with that, ritek are absolutely s#!te. From someone who used to swear by them I now regard them as one of the worst disc makers on the market. My last purchase of Grade A Riteks from SVP cost me more than most other brands but after several months they all started to fail.

Honestly, I completely disagree. I have been using riteks with G05 dye for ages now and I have burnt hundreds of discs; yet never had a single coaster. They work great for wii and ps2 games and dvds too!

Although it may also be a case of disc-to-burner compatibility. I use 2 burners:
A Pioneer 112D
&
A Pioneer 107D

I find that pioneers have the best combatibility with all discs after having tried various other burners.

Well, to each their own; I suppose!
I've been using Maxell disks for ages now and (unlike previous TDK's and Verbatim's) I haven't had a single problem with them.

I bought mine either from Costco or play.com when they were at half price.

Of course not, Ritek haven't been 2nd class since the G04s. G05 discs (and later) are now 3rd class media - ritek are back to being the joke of the optical industry (as they were in the mid to late 90's).

trouble05uk;1740808
Yes, but the brand does matter. I find Maxell are much less reliable than Sony discs. It's worth paying extra to save yourself time reburning because of failures!

Cheers for the tip. I've never had a failed burn so haven't given consideration to brand before... you watch, now I've said that I bet my next disc fails!

I know that they're DVD-RW but I've never found any DVDs better / more reliable than the Sony 50 pack that they sell on Play which are currently only 8.99 delivered: http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/904943/Sony-16x-DVD-R-Recordable-50pk/Product.html. These are DVD-R though.

I know this company was formed by a couple of brothers on disability benefit.

I certainly wouldn't trust them, and its no surprise to hear that they are bad for contact.

Strongly avoid :-( :x

I wouldn't recommend this company.
I havn't received my order after 7 days, they dont answer my emails and there is no phone number on their site!

I believe this company may be owned by the same guys who now own SVP, which would explain the **** service and lack of contact telephone or address anywhere on the site.

Shame really.

I've just received an apologetic e-mail from BigPockets about their misleading e-mail. It should have said 99p delivery not free.

I must admit that I am both surprised and disappointed with Bigpockets for having such poor stock. I have purchased from them often in the past and have always found them excellent and very fast. The only criticism I would have with them is their delivery charges however, if you add one of the items from the 'free delivery' page... well, do I have to explain further? ;-)
jamhops
SVP are better as its free delivery all the time! and also the email title was very misleading stating free delivery over £30 and then once i opened it turn out its not free delivery

SVP is never free delvery all the time for me!!! :-( only 99p at best

Hmmm... looks like this isn't such a good deal (for me) anyway. Their stocks are low and they're sold out of what I'm after. :-(
oops sorry I meant the other way round! This is bigpocket is a better deal as its £1 cheaper then SVP - usually SVP do the 99p deal but not this weekend.

anyway in comparison I think they do kinda stock similar products, but bigpocket have a wider product range!

£12 +VAT is a ridiculous delivery charge, I for one will not be looking to purchase anything from Memory-Express because if they can rip you off on delivery they can do likewise with their merchandise in my opinion.
Ouch!! Never took the order that far, just looked for price comparison. Maybe if you ordered enough it would justify the postage cost???
Was going to try my luck but the £12 delivery put me off:roll:
PNE
I'd say it was a misprice, if they had stock would definitely order some as these disks are great for recording off the TV.

You can order but its £12 delivery and I have a sneaking suspicion that its a single disk at 74p each.

everyone should click COLD.

these are shite. literally. they might work but you gotta be burning all at x1
crazymonkey
I am a super burner. I burn over 500 discs a month and let me tell you one thing..

AVOID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pay the extra and get the DATAWRITE Titanium discs OR RiData 16x Discs from Burnmedia or somewhere.

DO NOT BUY THIS DVD's they are total crap every disc will become a coaster simple as!

I brought 300 Datawrite Titanium Discs on the cheap, and they were just as useless. The 'Titanium' layer is actually on the side you write on, and the other side gets scratched just as easy.
