Why on earth would anyone buy GTX760 for 227 when you can get GTX970 for 270?
Bit of one of them situations now, buy another 780 and sli or jump ship to the new 900 series. Problem is that 780 is still playing all games bar watchdogs with ease.

Sit on just one 780... Unless you are going multi monitor or 4k resolution, 780 will be plenty for a long time. No reason to rush out and buy a new card every generation.
Thank you for that. Minecraft seems to run perfectly well. The current video card is a MSI GEFORCE210 1GB DDR3, is that sufficient? The PSU is rated at 750W (at first sight I would be amazed if a PC consumed more than 3/4kW, that is about one horsepower!), is it likely that I'd need to upgrade that in order to run a better video card?

In "gaming" terms that card is incredibly basic, it is a couple of years old and is a low noise "media" GPU. It would have been worth ~£30 when it came out and is closer to £20 now. It would be considered to have no potential for gaming and and any "gaming" card will be a decent improvement. Do you know what resolution and general settings your son is able to achieve at the moment?

The PSU is fine for most GPUs up to a high power, 750W is plenty even allowing for a poor quality and old supply that will probably be under performing. Could be a bit close on the 780 depending on those factors. If it is a very old PSU it may not have enough of the right connectors either so that's worth checking those too, if you do decide to buy a new GPU.
Many thanks.
The game card is running at 1280x1024 for the monitor and 1920x1080 for the Elgato HD video capture box (I have set it up to record the Minecraft output onto another PC, my son and his friends enjoy playing at making videos like the ones they see on You Tube). It all seems to be working fine, does that sound normal?
I'm happy enough to get my son another game card if he needs it, but it would be a bit pointless if he does not. What do you think?

If your boys still fairly young and minecraft is about the limits of his motor abilities (said nicely, kids are pretty good with tech but obviously a lot of games are intended for those with more developed dexterity) you'll probably find the current setup adequate. If he has much in the way of slowdown when there's a lot going on on screen (i.e the card is having to render a lot of blocks and the camera/movement looks "choppy") then sure, a bigger card will fix it. Get him to show you the biggest thing he's made/found and watch how the framerate looks when he's walking around it (will be obvious if it's not so good).

Give it a few more years (into his teens) and he'll probably be after something with a good bit more performance (or move away from gaming and be into something else). Generally around £170/200 is the sweet spot for a "good card" at the moment. You can pay LOTS more but do your research and if it's a fairly modern card with good reviews for around £200 at any point, it's probably a decent purchase for something fairly "high end". You can of course go into crazy regions of bleeding edge, new tech but it usually a case of throwing more money at less improvements.

In the case of nvidia the most recent x70 (so 970, 770, 670 etc they'll probably go 1070 in the next gen) card is the "nice" one without going crazy. Find the nivida card and check around for the comparable ATI one if you wish to save a bit of cash on similar power. The Nvidia's are a bit more polished as a package and have very slightly better drivers. The ATI are usually a good bit cheaper for similar amounts of performance.

Excellent advice, thank you.

Would I be right in thinking that Nvidia is the manufacturer of the processor, because I have noticed that video cards are branded by others (MSI, Palit &c)?

Correct. Nvidia design the cards and make the chips, the manufacturers license the design and make their own cards based off it. Same for ATI.
All this talk about minecraft, try using Seus ;)
Just curious, why would you spend £350 on a graphics card alone? Yes, the graphics maybe better than a full console of the same price but the game is the same?

- Much higher resolutions
- Much better visuals
- Much higher framerate
- Cheaper games
- More games
- No subscription fees
- Barely any 12 year old's screaming they slept with your mother

true but that does depend on the whether the game has been coded from the ground up. if its just a port then there maybe little or no difference

I've never seen this stuff in any store (east Scotland) I've checked in Camel on and Falkirk. My locals only a metro as well. Can anyone confirm any in that area? Take it they're in the sweets area?
Just as an aside, I bought some Froot Loops from Sainsburys t'other day and they are NOTHING like their American counterparts. I wonder if any of the stuff in this post is similarly watered down?

From what I've had so far from my local, these are the real, sugar-to-the-max deal, and not the usual UK equivalents. I know some people don't approve of the GMO, calorific, chemical-laden junk food....but it's OK once in a while...honest... :)
Nothing at the Serpentine Green, Peterborough store
Thanks, saved me a trip :)
They have this aisle end in Tesco Ystrad Mynach (S.Wales)
Tesco in Corby Northants stock these lines, available online if your delivery store stocks it too

Not in stock anymore :(
Meh, cancelled...
all orders cancelled !! it was worth a try !!
I remember loving these sweets as a kid. Mmm, Nerds and also the classic Monster Munch packs. However, like naanda, upon trying them again I haven't enjoyed them as much. Either they've changed the recipes or my sweet tooth isn't nearly as sweet. Still, Mook's post interests me. You see, I have a friend in China who I'd love to send a pack to. If I can find them in smaller quantities I might just get some.

p.s. Anyone remember Dweebs? :D
Oooh the nostalgia. I think dweebs were a less sour version of Nerds.

Watermelon was my favouritest flavour.
