I have the BBC weather app and it is always
showing rain. will this give me some sunshine?
Yr.no has a free app. Much more detailed and more accurate forecasts than the BBC in my experience.

Quite a nice app, I mainly use bbc weather and rain alarm as it predicts rain cloud movement forward a few hours and it's quite often correct, handy if the washing is outside :)https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.meteoplaza.splash
This one is good toohttps://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.mdiener.rain.usa.plus
I've tried them all, for me weather timeline is better for rain warnings. You aren't stuck with one weather provider either,, you can pick the one that's best for you.

Cheers, I will give it a go :)

Why wold you use one of these? I mean you can get a decent weather forecast using accuweather or something like that, or better still I could stick my head out the door.

Also, does the door have to remain open?

That's great. Please come to my house and use your super skills to tell me the temperature to the nearest 0.1 of a degree, the humidity and wind speed. Avert 15 seconds like this weather station does. Also do you have a screen built in because I like that feature?

It's ok. I like the bbc weather app which uses the base data from met office but presents it nicer.

does it come with a widget?
Yes but, considering its the MET office, the forecast is rarely correct.
Unresearched, gut-reaction, drivel - and totally wrong. The Met Office record is amongst the best, if not THE best, in the world - and certainly the best in the UK, by a very wide margin.Do you get your weather information from the Daily Express, perhaps?
No. I use the MET office app that's being spoken about here and it's usually wrong.http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q621/stuartjhanley/Mobile%20Uploads/Screenshot_2016-01-21-17-20-50_zpsmbbx4zwi.pngCurrent forecast - rain. Actual weather - cold, clear skyNow.... How much of a twit do you feel?
The arrows on the right give you a % chance of rain if you actually bother to look.Don't you feel like a twit now?
Still trolling flower? Not learned anything from yesterday's attempt? If it says heavy rain all day and not a single drop falls then it doesn't matter what the percentage says, its wrong.Last week it forecast heavy rain and we had snow.It may as well say "put your head out the door and guess yourself"So... No flower, I don't!

Weather forecast in being wrong sometimes shocker!

IMHO the free WeatherUnderground app is by far and away the best (if you picked up the free Premium account to WU posted here last year you can use that to remove the ads).IOSAndroid

That also has a great Apple Watch App including complication for the home screen - missed the premium account though !

I heard the BBC is thinking of dumping the MET office because it's so inaccurate and using a New Zealand Company that charges a quarter of the Met office and is better accuracy wise
Not quite correct. The BBC has already decided to ditch the Met Office - but purely to save money because of the expenditure cuts forced on it by this nasty government we've been daft enough to put in power.
The BBC knows full well the accuracy of its forecasts will suffer - but who cares these days? If it's cheap and in the private sector it must be good, mustn't it? And the NHS is going in exactly the same direction.
Not entirely true. The BBC has to put their weather forecasting out to tender and although cost had some bearing they have apparently been unhappy with the standard of Met Office forecasting since 2010. Even the Met Office admitted that its global temperature predictions had been wrong in nine of the previous 10 years.
But don't let those facts get in the way of you trying to blame the Government for this somehow.
When you say 'those facts', do you mean the bit about the BBC 'apparently' being unhappy about the standard of Met Office forecasting? Or the bit about global temperature predictions?
The first 'fact' is plain wrong - it's purely a question of money. The same reason the BBC is having to drop so much of its sports coverage. And the second 'fact' has little relevance to the 1-5 day UK forecasts, which are amongst the most accurate in the world.
Check out: http://blog.metoffice.gov.uk/2013/01/10/addressing-the-daily-mail-and-james-delingpoles-crazy-climate-change-obsession-article/
And in particular the last paragraph:There are also a number of other accusations which cannot be substantiated.
Mr Delingpole does quote Dr Whitehouse saying “when it comes to four or five day weather forecasting, the Met Office is the best in the world.”
This supports the view of the World Meterological Organization (WMO) which consistently ranks the Met Office in the top two operational forecasters in the world.
Our reputation for forecasting accuracy is based on our commitment to provide the world’s best weather and climate service which helps protect lives and property here in the UK and around the world.

Most of the Met Office's detractors work for right-wing publications like the Mail and the Telegraph - known haters of anything in the public sector. Don't believe everything you read there - neither paper is known for its balance or quality. You may try to defend the Conservatives' record, but they are single-handedly responsible for deliberate damage to public services across the country, and people are too naïve to see what's going on. Look at the state of the roads, the state of the NHS, the state of care for the elderly, education, transport - and ask yourself who's responsible. It's not the local authorities or the hospital trusts - it's plain lack of proper funding by the Conservatives, who are hell bent on damaging anything in the public sector that works.
So your response is to quote from a blog on the Met Office site...well they would say that wouldn't they!
The Met Office asked for too much money for a faltering service and were called up on it . The EU ( another entity you probably love) directives on public service contracts meant that the forecasting had to be put out to tender and the result was the BBC secured the best value-for-money for the license payers i.e. us lot. It's not often I applaud the BBC, but they did the right thing.
In these days of deficit, public organisations need to find the best cost-effective solutions without damaging the service - like any private company would. Sorry if that doesn't fit with your narrative. I agree that some cuts have been made in the wrong places but my wife works for the NHS and some of the waste, procedural nonsense and rank stupidity displayed by management is shocking. Nothing to do with 'naivety' or reading right-wing publications.
I think we'll have to agree to disagree on why the BBC has ditched the Met Office, and whether what they'll get from the alternative supplier will be better value (even though the money will now be going out of the UK instead of supporting a UK operation). And yes, it's a Met Office blog - but a Met Office blog is a whole heap more reliable than Tory mouthpieces such as the Mail and the Telegraph.

And let's not forget, it's the highly respected World Meterological Organization which consistently ranks the Met Office as one of the top two operational forecasters in the world - not the Met Office. :)

Sounds interesting have some heat. Following on fro your description, does your setup mean that as the British weather does its usual habit of temperature peaks and drops then your house thermostat automatically adjusts?

Isn't the point of a thermostat that you keep the internal temperature the same and the thermostat turns the hearing on and off to achieve that? Mine is set for 18 degrees regardless of external temperature so inside the house is how I like it, not sure how a weather station would improve this set Up?
Hi I can't find the warehouse deal? All I can see on warehouse deals is one that over £100, would some kind person person please point me in the right direction please.

This can be no worse than the efforts by the smug BBC idiots who get it wrong almost daily and can't predict more than 48 hours ahead.
Our national weather forecasting is a disgrace IMHO (rant over)

In case you didn't realise, a compass is basically a magnet. Magnets attract (or repel!) other magnets. I'll let you figure out the potential problem with your experiment :D
Thanks Zshamas for posting.
thanks, yes, I did realise, and I took that into consideration when I did the experiment.

Now did you such an experiment to see it happening? Try for yourself... If you have 10cm between the devices that would be enough, but if you prefer put 1m and you'll get the same results as mine... there is no consistency.

You kind of never get the true magnetic North on an Android device.
At some point I put 4 devices one next to the others and started a compass app, they were all showing North in a different direction.

A bit better on iPhones from my experience.

Shame it doesn't work with the Nest thermostat. (Yes I know they have their own).

What is the NEST kit you mention....didnt know about this

The Nest thermostat is the one owned by Google. They have a home automation platform called "works with Nest". You'll see items like the philips Hue bulbs and Nest Protect smoke alarm. There are more open platforms to get devices to operate slightly. Search on the net for IFTTT
Works brilliantly along with their thermostat and has helped me to identify areas within the house where I was losing heat so I can insulate/repair seals accordingly. Nest is a bit too "big brother" for my liking.

Or just look out of the window.

Which reminds me , I was working outside of a radio station and the forecast according to them was cloudy with a possibility of showers, if they actually looked out of the window they may have noticed it had been peeing down for an hour. Lol

I realise you're being sarcastic, so don't take this as moaning or uppity, but I've worked at several radio stations. Often the studios don't have windows and are buried in the deepest, darkest, most soundproof bit of the building... and the presenters barely have time to take a pee while they're on air! Not only that, they're forecasting for a huge region, not just their car park, which is why the forecasts often sound ridiculous!

Think you may have just highlighted how pointless this device is.

I missed this, so can someone tell me when it's going to stop piddling down please?!?

Free on Google Play Store as well
The reviews aren't very good
My experience with these free apps from amazon is that if I uninstall or disable the amazon store app the download apps I got via it no longer work as they detect that the amazon store app is not present.
This maybe by design.

This deal is also available in store - I posted it as a deal as hadn't seen this despite searching for 'Nikwax' and 'Go Outdoors' separately, but I think it should be within the deal section as well as don't need code in store as they're already reduced, plus I think it is also more visible as a deal: http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/half-price-nikwax-store-online-with-code-card-go-outdoors-e-g-1-litre-tech-wash-1833144

Have given you heat, though.

Sorry for your loss Kruger98...or did you mean he was just shocked a little?!
any one know how sturdy these are?

Word to the wise, my son was electrocuted with one of these last spring. It cracked and electrocuted him in the rain.

Lightsabers arent for children. You were lucky he was only electrocuted and not decapitated. I hope hes ok though.
Mine arrived today and I loves it I do :D

Can't wait to freak out a few people at work in a dark corridor lol
I got mine today but not tried it as an umbrella yet! The coloured bit down the middle (the cool bit) lights up with a few solid colours and can also scroll through all the colours. The LED torch in the handle is pretty bright with three LEDs. It's a bog standard umbrella, construction wise but what can one expect for this price? :-)

I can vouch for the dhb eq 2.5 jacket. Ive had one a year and a half. I ride 5 days a week, and probably wash it three days a week. still waterproof, and still looks pretty new. its a superbly well made jacket.
Free returns so if you don't like it send it bavk
Thanks for the advice I might try tkmaxx and try on the £40 polaris neutron at £40, seems to be £80-95 at Evans wiggle crb Merlin etc
Bought this jacket and on my first ride out wearing it I was absolutely soaked as it's just like wearing a bin liner. Do what I didn't and spend your money on something else.
Good deal and cyclestore turn around quickly

Your comment was certainly predictable. These are not for weather forecasting, they are for displaying and recording local conditions.

Honest question, why would you do that?
Because it's a fascinating hobby. It's very interesting to know how much rain you've had, how cold it's got and when, etc.

What's a good station to buy if I want to get into this as a hobby?

Jeez, you two, take a break, it's only a bargains forum.

I'd be interested in one of these not because I'm a weather nerd, but I once picked one up in a closing-down sale and found it really useful, just from the point of view of knowing how cold it actually was outside as opposed to how cold it looked from my window. if I could pick up a new one cheap I would.

That said I found that posting about equivalent units and USB ports etc v interesting. Always good to hear from someone who really knows their sh - er, stuff, and is wiling to share.

just get Oregon Scientific kit separately and a 433 Mhz receiver, set up your own database.

can never understand standalone weather stations with no other connectivity- can't view the trends etc

You sound like the most fun person I have ever met on this site going by your not at all miserable and condescending replies oO

Wow, hypocrite!

Maybe what you initially said warranted a condescending reply? Somebody isn't coming off well on this thread. Spoiler: IT'S YOU.

See above comment, another sense of humour failure. Sigh,

I checked with the authority for comedy and they detected 0% funny in your comment. So, my sense of humour is in tact. Phew!

Also given that the whole punchline of your "joke" was irrelevant, any comedy element (if there was any) was lost...

Yes, major sense of humour failure. Maybe the rather too subtle joke was lost on you. This is a shame, but in that case is it necessary for you to talk gravely about precise relevance and the 'authority for comedy'? Which sadly, appears to be a joke attempt on your part that is lost and as unfunny to me as a gentle visual gag about the unpredictability of our weather system is to you.

But hey, thats life

now you're embarrassing yourself. You used an irrelevant "gag" in an attempt to belittle the op as you had the wrong concept of what a weather station is used for, and now you're blaming everyone else.

So can you not see the daily mail for the contradictory farce it is? ..oh, it's never been contradictory, bigoted & downright misleading has it now!? ...well it's daily / weekly tirades re why the public tend to bang on so much about it, there tends not to be equilibrium & fairness in it's reportage, but a lot of spite & story telling that changes with the wind.
That's why the daily mail is regaled in such a manner, if the daily mail were a dog it'd be put down, in fact the daily mail itself would demand it put down on the 25year old "devil dogs" (& what pitiful guidance that rush to arms has caused), ditto "ban this killer craze" banning snowboarders ...daily mail (ski & SNOWBOARD show anyone) technically many folk could have sued the DM on the aggression & physical assault this brought about, with normally deemed sane folk trying to hit you, trip you at speed on your board, wheeras they'd never try & put a stick through the spokes of your bike as you rode by, ..much the same effect at the end of the day.

..it's the gibbering nasty stinky old crazy in the room, ongoing, that's the style it's chosen, schlok & celebrity schlok.
if you wish to defend it then change it's current output & then people will come around to it not being such a total 8itch of a paper with career climbing space filling hacks in comparison to informative journalism.

Crikey, you carry so much hate for a newspaper it's disturbing. You must wish you controlled some dictatorship where you could have only newspapers published that print what you want to hear and have all others banned if they printed something you disliked. Why should it change it's current output simply to please a load of lefties who don't like it's politics. Haven't you got your own politically biased newspapers to read?Thankfully I'm glad I live in a democracy with free speech (although that's getting less and less) and can freely CHOOSE what I want to read and also allow others to read what they want.

Lets look at it this way, if some kid at school tittle tattled so much in the form of gossip, lies & demonisation, you'dverbally warn your kid from being anywhere near them having got your kid to whale the tar out of them if they persisted in pushing in unwanted, & you'd probably tell the school that was your intent unless they curbed that child's behaviour.

The daily mail is the type of crud you believe in then? ...my oh my X)X)X)

We're not talking about kids, we are talking about adults reading what newspapers they wish to. Making that false analogy clearly shows what you think about people in general, inferior children that need to be told what to read for their own good and only believe what you tell them because you know best. Sounds like a little leftist dictator from a banana republic.
Mine arrived today. Great boots for the money.

By the way - someone said that the are large to size. I am size 11, ordered size 11 and they fit perfectly with a tiny bit of extra space of thick socks. True to size imho.

Since I posted the deal I have to laugh at the aggro this thread has caused - so funny
Blimey, didn't know a pair of snow boots could cause so much angst. Sexy boots though. If we all buy some we could start a revolution. Shame not in women's sizes, I suppose I could wear a lot of socks.;)

Maybe these snow boots should become government standard issue to teachers and maybe then we wouldn't have school closures when theres a couple of centimetres of snow!
Thanks for the kind thought; I'll work out how long it'll take me to walk the 10 miles to work, bearing in mind that in the last (well only) decent snowfall it took 21/2 hours to do a 20 minute car journey by train / foot because all roads were blocked! It was very sociable as loads of people were walking home - not sure how safe it'll be for those walking to school alongside roads with cars sliding all over the place or for those parents who have to drive their children to school. Roads around schools and school run times in general are bad enough, even in good weather! Oh and not all teachers have size 8 feet and above so you'd have to factor that in to the walk to work time too if these become standard issue! You'd also need to add a sledge to the kit list too so books and resources could get to school as well. The idea has given me a smile though; I love the snow, so thanks! :)

just looked on thier site £110 for a kids snowsuit! £7.50 for one pair of girls knickers jesus u must be minted mr gus to shop there

Nah, try to buy last season when the prices fall to the max "then in like flynn", or as has been mentioned, Pumpkin patch, Tog24, craghopper ((all in sales naturally)) plus Orage, either same applied or found occasionally in TK maxx, ..selective purchases I assure you.

Same scenario for her "school jumper" ...Lowe alpine kids fleeces, good quality having seen her from start of school (reception class) through till now & a good deal further, her school "recommends" not insists on school kit & colours, not demands, the typical cotton jumpers were naff, (given a few) ..& these again grow with her, & can be worn out at other times, the 3, (one since lost at local pool) cost less than a fiver each inc postage, ..good fleece (polartec or made to good spec's) simply last & last....

You don't buy a cheap item in a shop then fritter the saving on something else same shop same time, (that would be a hangable offence)! :{
